Since yesterday iTunes on my computer doesn't connect to App Store. It throws an error number. Probably all the issues are connected and since Apple is praised having the best support I think they should issue a statement.

Everything fails at some point, that's normal, they keeping silent about this it's not.

I think it's a combination of heart bleed fixes and certificates expiring.

A few services have gone down recently

Not a heartbleed issue. Apple stopped using OpenSSL way before that issue ever came up. If the gen 1 is using OpenSSL it's a way earlier version given Apple stopped updating that software a while ago. So wouldn't have installed a busted version

As for the certificate issue, perhaps

If it's a blackout, Apple needs to tell people about it.

If it's a cutoff due to age Apple needs to warn ahead of time.

I love you Apple but you need to act like you care about your customers that don't own the latest version of everything.

FFS calm down. Everyone is jumping to conclusions. This could just as well be a service malfunction.

Think about it. Why would Apple shut out millions of paying consumers weeks if not months before a new Apple TV is introduced?

I'm getting a bit sick of the bad attitude some people seem to have on here, if you don't want to hear complaints or you find the subject boring then read something else.

This might be hard for some of you to hear but Apple sometimes screws up, and a load of people start complaining because their stuff doesn't work anymore.

I personally don't give a dam that my old Apple TV can't connect to the iTunes Store, I'm not interested in all the latest features like Airplay mirroring, I just want my Apple TV to do want it did 3 days ago, which is to allow me to watch stuff from the hard dive or stream content from my iMac.

So yeah we do have the right to complain, in the past 3 days there hasn't been an iTunes update, there hasn't been a warning about ending support, there hasn't been any recent OS updates, the boxes just stopped working.

Ok so maybe I should update and I probably will, but I'd like a bit of a warning first, and anyway if I follow the advice of MacRumors, it says I should wait for the new one!

Apple

Apple could care less about the modest profits it gets from selling current ATVs. Compared to the nearly all profit every time an ATV user buys something on iTunes or rents a movie and there is no contest. They want their devices operational and being used.

Now they should come out with an ATV that has some built in storage. That is an easy call.

Patents?

I wonder if the original Apple TV included something that Apple was having to pay patent royalties on?
I ask this because I remember a news item here on FaceTime no longer being peer-to-peer to avoid a patent claim.
This got me wondering if FaceTime for iOS6 was cancelled as it still used the original peer-to-peer method.
That would tie together both of these, abrupt, service cancellations as well as explaining Apple's silence on the matter.

You've had 7 years. Stop complaining. When the new one arrives you'll gladly dump the first gen for it.

Well I got mine in 2010 from Apple so it's not 7 years old. Yeah you are probably right the next one probably will make me want to update, but I want my existing one to work in the mean time.

honestly i feel like there is always some issue with apple tv and itunes and i have a current gen apple tv. it is not uncommon for me to get a random message saying " cannot connect to itunes store, when my connection is fine and everything. i think apple needs to to do better with their apple tv support. tired of apple giving no love to apple tv.

People are reading way too much into this.

My Apple TV's work just fine, and so do millions of others. Otherwise this forum would be flooded with complaints, and it isn't. In those cases where there WAS a problem, Apple issued a product recall, which it has done with the 2nd gen some time ago.

You could still have a hardware problem. Maybe it would be worthwhile to check everything (including taking your Apple TV to a store) before slamming Apple on a forum. You would see that Apple's service in these cases is actually very good.

Your tin foil bunny ears are a tad too tight.

Maybe, maybe not. It's possible that Apple could cause occasional interruptions to services to older iOS devices just to nudge people in the "right direction" if you know what I mean. Of course, the more likely possibility is Apple didn't take some older devices into account (tested those devices) when they tested new upgrades and software.

I've been repeatedly trying to download Mavericks from the App store since about that time. It keeps getting just so far and then timing-out. Or else it stops with "The download failed" message.
I've downloaded it previously; no problem. And I have no problem downloading anything else on the interwebs. The process even seems to be hanging my cable modem (not the computer or my router), requiring me to reboot it.
Just weird.
Probably is something to do with Heartbleed measures somewhere. Makes most sense.
I'll just wait it out awhile.

Why are Apple so rubbish at communication and letting users know.

All they have to do it may one statement about "temporary problem, working on it, hope you have the matter resolved asap" and we'd all stop guessing.

How is that so hard?

If you get angry about devices becoming obsolete, than the company you should be avoiding most is Apple. They have a long standing history of progressing to new standards and technology.

It's completely idiotic :) (yes, again) to understand that from what I said. On the contrary. I want a company which will progress as fast as they want to new standards and technology and beyond boldly where no man has gone before. No problem.

But I will like to happen like in my next example.
Today I bought a hammer. I will use it, but after 4 years the same company made a new improved hammer. I will buy that as well, and now I'm happy because I have 2 hammers.
One I can keep as a spare, in case either one breaks, or I can sell or give it to someone poor who doesn't have money for the new improved one...and so on...
