Was the latest updated version of software it received an iOS 6 based variant? Might explain a couple of things it was.

No, the original Apple TV was based on a Pentium M processor, meaning its running a modified Darwin (OS X) Kernel. The 2nd (A4 ARM) and 3rd Gen (single core A5 ARM) all run a modified iOS Kernel because its ARM based, not x86 based.

This is really bothering me. First, iTunes Internet Radio no longer works, then FaceTime no longer works on devices running anything older then 6.1.6, then the Apple TV can't connect to iTunes. WTH is going on Apple?

Seems as though Apple was quietly doing some core service updates for whatever reason, be it security or laying the groundwork or foundations for new functionality with the next version of iOS, something they probably do every year (so everything "just works" right out of the box) but this time they appear to have inadvertently broken older versions of the software in the process.

Was iOS 5.x.x affected as well as iOS 6 for the FaceTime issue?

Slightly related note, but it is hard to believe that the Apple TV is over 7 years old now! Was the latest updated version of software it received an iOS 6 based variant? Might explain a couple of things it was.

Actually, the first Apple TV was based on OS X 10.4, it's never been based on iOS.

I seriously doubt Apple would have pulled the access from the iTunes Store on purpose. I mean old iPhones and iPods still have access to iTunes and App stores. There is a difference between new software updates and new features and then access to things like iTunes.

This will just be an unintentional bug that will be sorted ASAP.

First generation Apple TV is kind of old, maybe it is time to upgrade. :D

Don't be a dumbass! The 1st gen Apple TV is completely different to the newer apple TV, The newer model is a streamer and the older model is a storage device. I rip my movies (legally) from DVD and store them on my older apple tv. a Mac Mini is the only viable alternative other than some crappy media centre but I like the fact apple tv is instant on and is a dedicated media player. If apple release an apple tv with the option to add an external hard drive then I will ditch my original apple tv but until then the original apple tv has no replacement.

I hacked mine for XBMC (openELEC) anyway so this doesn't affect me. I think the hockey puck versions are much better for using iTunes/iTunes Store at this point.

Similar to iTunes on PPC Macs

Older versions of iTunes on Power PC macs all don't connect to the iTunes store anymore, and I don't recall Apple ever releasing a notice stating that they were dropping support.

Apple did his on Easter on purpose to punish all you ATV1 people. It was foretold by Steve Jobs in the Bible.

Conspiracy people are nuts. These threads help me add people to my block list.

Wait, the block list works with forum posts? I gotta utilize this!

They need to release a statement for PPC when it's been gone since something like 2006?

If it wasn't for the smiley face I'd have taken your post seriously

Indeed a 4-7-year old device that still works is way too old in tech years and must be thrown into landfill immediately! ;)

Oh here comes the posts of "Apple purposely did this to make people upgrade to the newest Apple TV".

No, that would be counter productive. If it was intentional, nobody in their right mind would buy another ATV knowing full well it too would be intentionally disabled in a few years.

But this has been going on for more than one day so I have to figure either they are either incompetent or totally unmotivated to fix this. Why not just put it back exactly as it was while they work in a fix?

It's completely idiotic :) (yes, again) to understand that from what I said. On the contrary. I want a company which will progress as fast as they want to new standards and technology and beyond boldly where no man has gone before. No problem.

But I will like to happen like in my next example.
Today I bought a hammer. I will use it, but after 4 years the same company made a new improved hammer. I will buy that as well, and now I'm happy because I have 2 hammers.
One I can keep as a spare, in case either one breaks, or I can sell or give it to someone poor who doesn't have money for the new improved one...and so on...

Your analogy doesn't work. This is consumer electronics, not tools that have been around for centuries and don't change.

Consumer electronics evolve and require the customer to move with it. That pace is increasing whether you like it or not.

Try using your VHS tapes in a DVD player, or sticking a SCART cable into an HDMI socket. We needed to move on from VHS to enable better picture quality, and the same goes for SCART. We are dealing with electronics here, which evolve.

More than a day of an issue and Apple's engineers are considered incompetent? Seriously??????

I have a good idea of what may have happened. My first generation Roku went down for a while due to what Roku described as the servers for first generation were different from new generation Roku. There was a problem with the old servers but recommended upgrading to the latest generation to avoid anymore outages.
I would guess that is the problem because that is the only generation affected.

Yet your Commodore 64 has better chance of some time playing BluRay disks than any Apple device.

I am able to watch BluRay movies on my MacPro though mostly I use the BD writer I installed in the 2nd optical bay for burning discs either for playing on another BD player or to make data backups. Although not supported by Apple by using 3rd party software I purchased I have been able to watch the occasional movie.

I don't understand why people make silly assumptions that Apple would have intentionally ended access to iTunes services on the first-generation Apple TV. What if - and I'm not the only one to have said this - Apple caused this problem unintentionally and will be fixing it soon?

Customers are not stupid, and most companies know this and wouldn't dare to cut off support just to try and get customers to upgrade. Unless they want to lose happy customers to a competitor.

Give the company a chance to correct their (stupid) error before shooting them down.

I bet so many people avoid these forums because some people just rant and argue unnecessarily, and it creates an unpleasant environment to be at.

^^^How long is soon? The Internet radio has been down since 3/26/14, almost a month now.

Boy am I glad I am (pretty much) done with Apple. In the last 3 years the company has been nothing but scum.

-
  • - firmware fixes used to "patch" hardware defects is a common trick Apple uses. (Gamma corrections for insufficient coating on the iPod Touch)
  • - iPad 3 (aka iPad 4 beta) quick money grab
  • - Change of adapters (lightning) with NO benefits over the old one that had been standard over the last 7 years.
  • - the mini/micro usb standard they continually ignore just so they can get more money from a proprietary adapter.
  • - Hold rights to the adapter for 6 months so that the only way to get a replacement adapter is through Apple. Continue to hold rights even when they couldn't hold up with the demand and charged $30 for a $1 Chinese cord.
  • - Still can't change the keyboard in iOS because Apple thinks we've all got the same hands.
  • - Crippling of iTunes with the release of version 11; apparently we're too stupid to be able to operate two windows at once in iTunes.
  • - Releasing a 128gb iPad model with a $100 premium when prices have crashed in 2010 and in all actuality it costs just as much to produce as it does the 64GB these days.
  • - Planned obsolescence. Its not my imagination this company definitely makes older devices run slower with every update while strictly focusing on making the latest the best. Then they cherry pick features to remove out of the new iOS version because your model is "too old" to support it.
  • - Cant come up with anything original in the last 5 years strictly surviving on their paid media hype and their illusion that using their products makes you look cool.
  • - Apple is responsible for the walled garden approach that has created segregation in technology. Their Apps store for Apple products only has led to several other companies following suite. Now we have Google Play, Amazon Store, and Windows store.
  • - Company manipulates review sites by shunning them from one of their events if they don't give their products a good review they refuse to allow them to attend one of their events. (iLounge 3G Shuffle review did this)

I do say I respect Apple in regards to their SoC setups they are blazing fast but unfortunately they are a nanny company that likes to control what you do with their products and what you can't do.

The only thing I still use right now is my Apple Classic and I am sure its days are numbered, really I am surprised it has lasted as long as it has. Once my classic dies I will be on to another brand.

Unfortunately there are plenty of "cool" "hip" people out there that will continue to buy into a brand just because of a fashion statement.

A total misquote and the reason why the down one button needs to come back

1. Apple neve said their stuff is issue proof, especially using that phrase

2. You are talking about a nearly full seven year old device, running ages old software. Time to move on from it and stop expecting it to act like it should be running just as well as when it was new.

It's not a big ask to be able to have 7 year old hardware to connect to iTunes, especially since it worked yesterday. It's not like it expired over night.
