Boy am I glad I am (pretty much) done with Apple. In the last 3 years the company has been nothing but scum.
Unfortunately there are plenty of "cool" "hip" people out there that will continue to buy into a brand just because of a fashion statement.

Some of us actually like the Apple Eco system and don't buy the products to make us look cool.
Yes sometimes they have issues. Gues what so does every other technology company in the world.

Customers are not stupid, and most companies know this and wouldn't dare to cut off support just to try and get customers to upgrade. Unless they want to lose happy customers to a competitor.

Hate to break it to you, they are. The success of "Beats" brands headphones is in the name of Dr. Dre, it isn't because of their quality sound. They are a top seller with mediocre sound.

Further they are actually created by Monster, the company that was selling HDMI cables for $80 as superior to others when they were found to perform no better than the $5 amazon HDMI cables.

I'm sorry success of some companies are reliant on consumers stupidity. Apple has been doing this kind of behavior for years. It works just fine as long as they continue to deny such a thing. One great example is the iPad Mini 1st gen supports Siri but the iPad 2 doesn't. Virtually the same hardware but for some reason the iPad 2 just can't support it.

Another similar situation is the iPad 3, release it half finished in March for a quick money grab only to release the finalized product in October. iPad 4 is twice as fast and ends up being exactly what the iPad 3 should have been in the first place.

Further demonstrating this behavior is their online store activity, removing the iPad 3 as if it never existed instead still selling the iPad 2. Boy they really tells me that they had a lot of faith and support behind the iPad 3 in the first place.

So...has the ATV lost the ability to connect to your local copy of iTunes (and thus resulted in the inability for you to play media that you have stored locally), or has it lost the ability to connect to the iTunes store?

I'm guessing it's the latter. I'm also guessing that it's a temporary glitch, as I doubt that Apple would have totally removed access without giving anyone any advanced warning.

Having said all of that...I do have to say that anyone here who is still using a 1st gen ATV to purchase movie rentals, etc. from the iTunes store really needs to join the current century. For $35 you can get a Google ChromeCast. For $95 you can get a current-gen Apple TV.

Use an older version of itunes will fix that. Nice thing about the older version is storing movies to take with you to a hotel or wherever. I sold my ATV1 a year ago knowing this was coming. Lets hope apple adds 64GB ram to the new one so it can be portable too with home movies stored on it. If they don't, I will move onto something else. Would suck but oh well.

Your analogy doesn't work. This is consumer electronics, not tools that have been around for centuries and don't change.

Consumer electronics evolve and require the customer to move with it. That pace is increasing whether you like it or not.

Try using your VHS tapes in a DVD player, or sticking a SCART cable into an HDMI socket. We needed to move on from VHS to enable better picture quality, and the same goes for SCART. We are dealing with electronics here, which evolve.

I could easily give a modern analogy. And in my example with the hammers I didn't meant that's how it always work in the real world, but how it should work.

And your examples are actually good, except you didn't word it right. If you will use a DVD in a dvd player, a VHS cassette in a VHS player they will in fact work just as well, even after 20 years. Your VHS cassette with your wedding or your first car, will in fact work (if you forgot to back it up on a hard drive), but according to you it shouldn't work anymore, even if the old player is not broken.

Old software also will work most of the time, especially if it was freeware and not connected to some licensing server, old nintendo cartridges will work, and so on.

Yes, we need to move on from the old standards to enable better picture quality but that's not a reason to destroy the old stuff, especially if for some people they are still good.

:rolleyes:they stopped selling the ipad 3 because no one would of bought the 4 if they kept selling the 3 marked down.

iPad 2 came out in March 2011 and the iPad Mini came out in November 2012.
What a stupid comparison.

Why don't you guys just use torrents to get your movies, transcode them if necessary and put them on your atv and not bother with itunes? If apple want to block access to legal means to buy movies on itunes, they should not be surprised if customers get them through other means instead, including torrents.

Reading your posts on this thread makes me think your main gripe is Apple releasing the iPad 4 not long after the iPad 3 which you got caught up in.

I hate to break it to you but Apple never put a gun to your head and said that you had to buy the iPad 4 or a newer iPad as soon as it comes out. The fact that the iPad 2 has only just stopped being available to buy and is still being supported suggests that your iPad 3 will be supported for quite some time yet.

Good luck finding a company out there who has a greater product release cycle time than Apple.

Reminder - Apple considers products obsolete at 3 years and "vintage" at 5.

Strangely since the Apple TV is a weird place in the Apple ecosystem, it's not on this page that I can find: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1752

Please don't spread misinformation. According to Apple, a product is considered vintage if it is 5 years after discontinuation, but less than 7. In addition, Apple considers products obsolete when they have been discontinued for more than 7 years.

Who cares, its first generation after all - these are older than hens teeth. People should be updating every couple of years. Support for older devices should be pulled so only the latest generation and the one before it should be supported. Im sick of companies having to supports years old hardware because consumers fail to move on.

New Apple TV's aren't expensive, that's not really an issue for most people.

I have one of each gen Apple TV. The oldest first gen one is attached to an older LCD front projection with component in only.

I'll have to go see what happened.

If it loses much functionality I'll have to investigate HDMI to component converters.

HDMI to component converters are illegal in the US, as per the DCMA.

Replacing the ATV1 with an ATV3 isn't the problem - it is replacing a $600 preamp that doesn't have HDMI connections and a $2,000 HDTV that doesn't have HDMI connections to use an $99 ATV that only has HDMI connections.

The OS is based on Tiger

Possible virus speading on old Tiger hacks? This was a hobby favorite to get a Tiger machine for $300.

so how exactly does that negatively impact you?

and personally as a 5s owner i find it ridiculous that ios7 has to take the pretty outdated 5 into consideration. i mean get with the program people and update to the latest.

And 10+ year old PC with Windows XP can still connect to iTunes. Oh the irony. Nothing beats Windows ecosystem.

This is exactly what Apple is trying to prevent... Longevity. Make a good product.. But not great enough for consumers to use for too long. Else the cash cow will run dry.
