At the risk of repeating myself:

iPad mini 32GB: $429
iPod touch 32GB $299

The iPad mini is over 43% more expensive for the same storage option.

THX for repeating yourself since Im too lazy to read all replies ;-)

But I think most not hardcore fans, users, dont think so much about the storage.

They will look at the 2 devices and think hell no that I pay the same for that little thing

Actually a pretty good buy. I was worried (from the rumors) that they'd go 8GB for the $329 model, but since it bottoms at 16GB, I can definitely see this as a definite next present for Mom. She'll love the size, and given she still has the 16GB iPad 1 now and loves it, she'll love the fact that it is a way improved device from what she has now.

For me, it is a bit of a ipod touch killer, but I can still see certain people still wanting the wifi device to be pocket-sized without the phone service stuff.

Still, I'm liking that Mini weight. That should feel pretty much weight-less.

They released the Playstation Vita earlier this year, if that's what you mean.

I worded that poorly.

I said "get back in the hand held computer game".

I was using "game" is in "industry", "business", etc.

How about "When will Sony get back in the game, and make some good hand-held computers like they used to"?

And by good, I don't mean like the Tablet P.

I mean like the UX-180/280/380 UMPC, Clie UX-50/TG50/NR70 palmOS PDA, the Vaio P UMPC, etc. Really nice designs for that time period.

Walk down memory lane (for some of us):

Maybe some users. In our family we're very conscious of storage with iPods since 16GB just isn't enough to store all our music and apps.

Also, I asked my kids which they would want if the price (and storage) was exactly the same, and they unanimously choose the iPod Touch. Not everyone automatically thinks a bigger device is better (despite what Android phone users would have you believe). Portability is a genuine feature for many people, and I think you'll find that the new iPod Touch holds its own pretty well.

So I would imagine you notice all the pixelated images on the web when using your retina display then and all the other software that has not been updated with the necessary graphics....must be incredibly annoying!

Most peoples eyes focus on the fonts and texts during usage the overwhelming majority of the time. Also, pictures and photos obviously also look significantly different.

Kindle Fire. Nexus 7 - the latter with an upgrade due in a few days.

Kindle Fire = not smooth enough experience. No thank you.
Nexus 7 = androidverse. I'm fully invested in the appleverse, so ease of integration is a huge benefit. Plus, I want the slightly larger screen (yes, the event video sold me on it being worth it. LOL)

$299 for an iPod touch but for $30 more I can get an iPad mini?? Why would I buy an iPod then? Doesnt make sense.

- iPod fits in your pocket
- iPod has retina display
- iPod has twice the storage capacity (32GB)

For the 16GB iPad mini, $329 is not a bad price, quite low for Apple. It's way cheaper than the iPhone.

----------

Ahh, okay. For some reason, I thought the Touch just had 16GB and started at $299.

I still think I've got a point with the touch being a little mooted by the mini, but it's not as strong an argument as it was a few minutes ago. :p

The iPod touch is probably the best thing to get if you can only get one iOS device IMO. It's so much cheaper than the iPhone but still allows you to keep a portable computer in your pocket.

I Like Apple, but.......

At the risk of repeating myself:

iPad mini 32GB: $429
iPod touch 32GB $299

The iPad mini is over 43% more expensive for the same storage option.

Exactly and more than 50% more expensive than the nearest competitor.
if it's about books on a 7-8 inch screen then the Fire and the Nexus 7 are the competitors. The Fire HD 32GB is $265 and the Nexus 7 rumored for next week in the 32GB configuration is $250. It also has a GPS.

So if we compare those to the iPad Mini 32 then it's 62% more expensive then a similarly configured Fire HD 70% more expensive than the Nexus 7 at a proposed 32GB configuration. Part of this is the obscene premium that Apple makes you pay for the memory upgrade. I bought a 64GB class 10 micro SD from Amazon for $45 yesterday.

I do like Apple so don't start bashing me calling me a hater.
We have the following in my house:
2 - iPad2
2 - iPod Classics
1- MacBook Air 13" (2011)
1- MacMini
1- 15" Macbook Pro
1 - MacPro with 8 cores
1- Original AppleTV
Apple share holder.

I cannot justify the price the price difference to buy two of these over the price of 2 Nexus 7 pads.

No matter how Tim and Phil try to justify it, the price is just too high to be considered competition for the Fire and Nexus. This pricing not the hardware will make the iPad Mini a failure.

It's $129 more expensive than an iPod Touch in the same 32GB configuration.
The guts are more or less the same but with larger batteries and a larger screen. The screen and the larger battery do not justify $129 premium.

I'm sure there will be the lemmings that will wait in line.

there are MUCH better e-readers than this, includin probably your iphone (if its retina... studies are beginning to show not strainin to read small text is ideal. plus weight, etc.)..

I have poor eyesight, so a bigger screen with less pixel density puts less strain on my eyes than a smaller screen with more pixel density. I wouldn't be surprised if the iPad mini was already "retina" at my viewing distance while reading.

But wait a second; does this mean that people with poor eyesight are less prone to eye strain? :)

I'll be interested to see others' answers to this question, because my recollection was that the 2 didn't have adequate processing power to handle Siri--yet doesn't the mini have the same processor as the 2?

Perhaps this has already been covered by why is it that the iPad Mini has Siri and the iPad 2 does not? Am I missing something here?

Not the processor - it was the Microphones lack of noise canceling that was a much bigger issue.

the iPad Mini has dual microphones in it.

Marketing. And "planned obsolescence".

if Jobs were alive though, i wouldnt be surprised if Siri made it onto the 2. Seems like he realy believed in the tablet - since the 80s.

Siri has worked on Jailbroken older devices.

If you don't know anything about iPads, I feel sorry for you when you walk into an Apple store trying to buy one because you are going to be one confused human being.

iPad 2
iPad 3
IPad 4
iPad mini

The specs will be what confuse people in terms of which one they should get and which one will suit their needs.

The 3 is gone - and the 4 is called iPad with Retina Display now... Strange name as the New iPad name was.

You're preaching to someone who is very aware of the retina displays and how good they are...I love them, I'm just trying to be objective.

So guess the iPad Mini is going to be equally eye straining as full iPad for ebooks then.

I tend to agree with you—although I won't be buying a Fire or Nexus. All things considered, I would rather buy a 4th gen iPad, no question, and I do think the iPod Touch is better value too. I was expecting the iPad 2 to disappear with the launch of the iPad mini, and for the mini to really go after the price-conscious shopper—get them into the Apple ecosystem and all that. My guess is it won't be a complete failure, but I don't think it's going to set the competition on fire either.

"One hand use"?

So why the big deal about the 4" iPhone, didn't Apple say it was the perfect size for one hand use, the iPad Mini is much bigger!

I don't think they meant you can completely operate this with one hand. They were saying, basically, you can read with one hand, or two if you want; it's something you can use with one hand, lying in bed or sitting comfortably in a chair. A lot of people think the big iPad is too big for comfortable reading.

Learn the english alphabet then. It wasnt that hard - nor were there that many misspellings/typos (i said 'u' instead of 'you'?). Learn english.

thanks.

Thanks for admitting that you didn't speak perfect English in your writing (in more than the one way to which you refer), but that's not the problem, and that wasn't my point but I apologise for making fun of your poor grammar. And if you want me to be pedantic about grammar (you brought up the subject by the way), the word, 'English' is capitalised, and the word, 'wasnt' is a contraction of two words, 'was' and 'not'. But, let's not be pedantic, agreed?

The problem (bringing this conversation back to your post) is that you made no sense. I'm not talking about your poor grammar, I'm talking about the fact that your response didn't refer to my post in any intelligible way. Please explain what you meant in your response to my post, and I'll be happy to reply.

If surfing is what you want then you really don't want any 7 inches tablet with 16:9 ratio.. They show a couple of web page side by side and Nexus 7 one look so small . Once you look at it, you would want an Ipad mini instead

Yet when you take the same logic and apply it to phones everyone is up in arms. That logic doesn't apply.

The iPad "Mini" is bigger than expected. iPad = 9.7 inches while iPad Mini = 7.9 inches (this is only 1.8 inches smaller diagonally). Is it really going to be more portable than an iPad? Yes it's lighter, but I would like to see them side by side in person to compare them with the iPod Touch as well at 4 inches.

As I said on another thread...

Only Apple would say that a >4" phone is too large for the hand, yet talk about how great it is to use a 7.9" iPad mini that fits in one hand. :)

I just think there is a significant difference between using a phone one handed and a tablet the same way.Different uses and different product niches.
