Yet when you take the same logic and apply it to phones everyone is up in arms. That logic doesn't apply.

What you miss is that Ipad mini is 7.85 inches 3:2 ration vs a 7 inches 16:9 ratio. When Ipad mini play movie, it has about the same size HD movie space as Nexus after you account for letter box. 16:9 ratio is for movie and 3:2 ratio is for web serving and book reading. Android take the position that movie is everything in a mobile device and has to suffer the consequence of the choice.

In a phone, bigger size won't work. Can you image a 3:2 ratio Iphone that has the same movie playing area of a 4" Iphone 5 size display? The 3:2 device will be in the neighborhood of Note 2 and it is way too big to be consider a phone that one carry in their pocket. Iphone 5 is a design compromise but given the restriction of how big a hand is and how big a screen need to be.. That is as best as anyone has come up with at this point.

This is a long thread, so sorry if I am repeating what others have said.

I understand why no retina display on the mini, since Apple is really putting a premium on wieght with this device...bigger battery for retina will add bulk and wieght. Not apologizing for it, just saying it might have been a factor...along with cost.

Apple is trying to hit a sweet spot between pocket devices and a full size iPad, so there are going to be some trade-offs. Personally, the mini is not for me, since I use my iPad to do a fair amount of email, notes, and an occasional one or two page document. The iPad is really my primary device.....although, I occasionally use the family computer for stuff that is more appropriate for a full size computer. This happens with less frequency as the iPad has become more capable.

That said, I can see how the mini might appeal to some folks. My wife primarily uses our desktop, but she might enjoy a small light wieght tablet for reading, email, web, and the like.

Why? By this logic no one would ever buy iPad Mini but buy regular iPad instead. The two image comparisons are misleading (what else would anyone expect from Apple?) Apple picked up a page that is short and fits completely on one screen (when tablet is in portrait position). This way they masked the fact that Android tablet displays more content in portrait mode.

so can you pick a different pictures that will make Nexus look better while surfing the web?

There are two things showed in the pictures. 1) the 7.85 inches vs 7 inches size difference and 2) 3:2 vs 16:9 aspect ratio difference. Apple pick 7.85 inches for a reason. It allow them as big an LCD screen (the thinner bezel is part of the design effort to make the screen bigger) while the device can be held in one hand. Android make the decision to emphasis watching movie so they pick 16:9 ratio. they sacrifice web serving experience for the sake of maximize the movie watching experience. The 7.85 inches decision by Apple allow them to have similar space for playing movie (including the letter box) as a 7 inches Nexus.. I bet the next iteration of Nexus tablet, Google will move up to 7.85 inches. But Android will always has problem in surfing web in the landscape mode because of design choice made a long time ago.

And the tablet apps problem will only be solved if Android tablet users are more willing to spend money on apps and buying stuff. Apple clearly cherry pick the apps and web page to show off Ipad mini advantage. Unfortunately for Nexus, it is probably going to be the experience of a lot of buyers and hence they make decision not necessary base on spec only. If spec is really that important, S3 should outsell Iphone 4S by a mile before Iphone 5 show up. Spec is just a part of what a buyer look for this day.

That's a very Apple-centric way of thinking. While some Android tablets have 7" screens there are also tablet models with 7.7" screens (and other sizes like 8.9 etc.). And why exactly 3:2 screens are better for web browsing? It's not like web content is formatted this way (it is not). So, while 16:9 tablets do have clear advantage when viewing movies, they do not have any disadvantage with web content. They are just smaller but then again there are Android tablets of all kinds of sizes.

not really impressed with the iPad mini i was looking to get one as the price was good... however apple has clearly released this one specked down only 5mp cam 1024*768 everything is retina now there using the chip from the iPad two why.... this thing is being realized along side the 4th gen of ipads seems to me that they are getting greedy...the specs are not inline with current offerings and it is clear to me that within a couple of quarters they will update the chip,display,camera..as a consumer.... why would i buy now when in 6 months they will update just about the in-tire product...not great i was really looking forward to this..when i was watching the keynote and i saw phil start comparing the Mac mini to the ipad2 i knew this would be a cash grab...finger wagging apple..

just to ad to the previous statement I would've been okay with the non-retina display however the a5 chip and the camera only being 5mp is a real turnoff

Specs only matter to a few people, it is easier to photoshop things and trick people.

Not that excisting or impressive. It's just a smaller iPad. Still runs the same OS.

Boooorrrriiinnnnngggg....

Now I gotta wait another 2 years for iPhone 6 and probably a Retina Air.

Screw Apple.

Tell me again why you are wasting your time on this site?

Yawn...

He is living in hope, like the rest of us, that one day Apple will open the floodgates and cease these incremental updates. The point is that one doesn't gain over $100 billion in cash reserve by being generous. It is done through cheap labor and incremental updates. Oh and clever marketing by brainwashing people into thinking they have to have the latest. Just read through all the comments of those whinging that they now have an outdated iPad! Brainwashing at it's best, or worst.

I think I will finally be buying an iPad! ... the entry level mini. Looks very impressive.

I am joining in with the same crowd. Looking forward to it!

"Screw Apple"

"Now I gotta wait another 2 years for iPhone 6 and probably a Retina Air."

So, in two years you'll be purchasing whatever they have to offer? Quit your whining.

i have nexus 7. and im regretting it. its been like 2months now im not using it. its too small.. the webpage seems not right and being an S3 user, everything is like blowup. phil schiller is right.

I lasted 2 days before I returned my Nexus 7.

You're braver than me.

Yes, back to iPad which is the focus of my attention too much these days<grin>, but I'm also very interested in understanding why some find their given names perfect as they are, and some are happier mutating them or having them mutated for them.

Some like their names "mutated" because the name might otherwise sound precocious. For you, I'd prefer "Bill".

Which brings us back to the iPad. As soon as I pay off a few Bills, I'd like to pick up a new iPad Mini.

I'll wait for the iPad Shuffle

iPad Shuffle, a truly revolutionary device. Just with a single double tap of the home button the iPad Shuffle displays content for you to consume in a truly random fashion. Random webpages, music, photos, books, games, etc.

*pause*

Because here at Apple we really like to push the envelope, we came up with a way to store all your payment information, and automatically charge random Apps to random credit cards at any given time just with a home button double tap. This device is going to change forever the way you live, it is going to revolutionize your life style. iPad Shuffle, shuffle your life.

Wrong. 16:9 ratio has many disadvantages with "web content", even compared to 3:2. But this basicaly applies to any type of work: documents, notes, email, etc.

For web content, it has nothing to do with formatting.

i think u missed his point entirely. To be fair i guess, his english is not 100%.

Cmon, stop this crazy Steve worship. Do you really think one man can run a company?
One man surely can't run a company. But one man can make the crucial difference between good and mediocre! Especially when he's at the helm...

Name the top 10 apps you use on an iOS device.

...its not always an issue of your most used apps, but what kinda apps u can have available to you when you decide or want to use them. but anyway:

f.lux
siri
Pro tube
notability (i think better than evernote)
waze
garageband
google maps
star walk
safari (of which i prefer over other mobile browsers like chrome or mercury, especially wit plugins and tweaks)
gasbuddy

sure theres more but can't think of em at the moment, as well as ones i don't use DAILY, but love to use when i do.

as far as i can tell.. over half of those are only on iOS.

Does one realy need to recall Apple's days when Steve WASNT there?

That dumb comment got 8 ups? seriously?

I used to be one of the scoffers at the Ipads wide bezel, until I finally got mine and used it, now I see why they made it . You can even see them holding screen in their own promotional videos. It's fine on some apps, others not so much.

I am interested in the weight As My Ipad is a heavy brick, But Sweet sweet retina is totally worth it.

I agree this will likely be the Ipad 3 and a new retina version will likely be here before June of next year if apples current update pattern holds.
