The quote from the Verge is of particular interest to me:

The display on the mini looks incredibly sharp, and even though the resolution is lower than the 3rd and 4th generation full-size iPad, it doesn't immediately seem like a 1024 x 768 display. The smaller, 7.9-inch surface area certainly helps squeeze the pixels.

I mean I'm bummed out that it isn't a "retina" display, but after reading that, it's quite nice it actually uses the same resolution as the iPad 2 and they didn't drop the number, which sorta makes this a semi-retina display to me.

Basically it's still sharper than the iPad 2. Interesting :)

As I said on another thread...

Only Apple would say that a >4" phone is too large for the hand, yet talk about how great it is to use a 7.9" iPad mini that fits in one hand. :)

Man I wish there were still a down vote capability here. The iPad mini is not a PHONE. Putting a >4" phone up to your head is stupid. Did you make this same complaint when the original iPad came out? Isn't that hypocritical of Apple to say a >4" phone is too large but then they came out with a 9.7" iPad?

The design is nice but I'm not impressed with the display. I wish they could have gone with a higher resolution. Kindle fire has a better resolution than the this thing. Very disappointed apple.

Honestly, this is so true. The people complaining about retina are just arguing for specs for the sake of it. The screen will look very good. Yea, its not the best in the industry but Apple didnt become successful by throwing specs at you. The retina resolutions are overkill in my opinion. There is no perfect ppi but this is solid.

Note: I realize Apple did brag about retina iphone but I think that was sort of going against they nature. To me, Apple has been about usability over hardware specs even if they do advertise when theirs are better.

Of course I didn't. And it's not a complaint. I'm mocking the semantics used by Schiller in the keynote. Relax there pally.

$299 for an iPod touch but for $30 more I can get an iPod mini?? Why would I buy an iPod then? Doesnt make sense.

Depends on what kind of size matters to you. If you want something that can ride on your arm when you're out running or provide a reasonable viewing experience when you're on the bike in the gym, then iPod Touch is fine. It'll fit more easily in various pockets as well.

If you're more into casual web browsing/reading etc. and not too worried about finding pocket space, then new iPad would be suitable.

Size does matter, but it doesn't mean that larger is always better :)

I now see how innovation works at Apple since Steve Jobs has died.

"We need innovation in the iPhone! Do it now!"
---"We'll make it bigger!"
"Brilliant! Magical!"

"We need innovation in the iPad! Do it now!"
---"Well... it worked for the iphone, but lets make this smaller!"
"Brilliant! Magical!"

Cmon, stop this crazy Steve worship. Do you really think one man can run a company?

Yeah, the kindle fire has 169 ppi and the iPad mini has 163 ppi, what a total failure /sarcasm

Idiots everywhere.

HOLD IT with one hand. You either have your 9.7" iPad in your lap, on the stand or held with two hands. You never hold it with 1 hand for prolonged periods of time.

you USE your iphone with 1 hand.

Thanking you for saving me the time I would have spent typing this.

The difference is still:

You USE your iPhone with 1 hand, that is, the other hand is free to do other stuff.

You hold your 9.7" iPad with two hands, or have it in your lap, or hold it in one hand for brief moments.

You hold the mini with 1 hand as the "default usage mode", not needing to have it on your lap for prolonged use.

Learn the difference between "HOLD with one hand", and "USE with one hand"
The S3 or other cell phones has nothing to do with this...

And on that note, my brother has quite large hands, and even he needs to shift his grip on the S3 to use it with 1 hand, that is, he needs to change his grip to reach different parts of the screen. Sure, you can use it with one hand, but not necessarily as easy as with smaller phones.

"Who wants to watch video on a little 3 inch screen? No one, that's who! Let the competition waste their time with useless hardware. Apple doesn't deal with pointless products!"

Steven P. Jobs, shortly before the unveiling of the iPod Touch with video capabilities.

I have an iPad 2 and I'll be staying with it. I might be tempted with an iPad mini 2 or maybe iPad 5. We'll see what next year brings us.

I'm just going by what the report says and the ads Apple have been playing on TV with the iPhone.

Good to see that Apple now has all bases covered with the iPad now. I do prefer the smaller form factor tablet, especially when browsing in bed.

Not a bad price at all either IMO at £269. (Yes I know the $ to £ conversion is a bit poo but ours does include VAT).

iPad mini first appears in The Incredibles!

Watch The Incredibles and you will see an iPad mini like device. It shows up while Mr. Incredible is sitting in his office. I think it's the sean where he gets the ransom note. Maybe the note was even on the mini.

$299 iPod touch is a pocket device, has 32GB of space, and a retina display.
$329 iPad Mini is a tablet device, has 16GB of space, and no retina display.

BTW, I'm SO glad I sold my iPad 3 :) It was too heavy for my needs. iPad Mini, You're mine by Christmas time!
