The marketing image for the iPad Mini makes it look like a fake photochop of what people thought the iPad/iSlate was going to look like 2 and a half years ago.. It's comical to think they actually made this thing

$299 for an iPod touch but for $30 more I can get an iPad mini?? Why would I buy an iPod then? Doesnt make sense.

Try fitting that thing in your pocket. There's a price for convenience and "micro"ness. People would also say: Why not purchase an iphone 5? Same thing, convenience of not having to sign-up for a contract.

Personally, I'm going to bite on this one. I've been holding out for this long. The iPads were far too large for me. Taking that thing out in public just didn't feel right. I know the iPad mini is not at all small but it's much smaller than the iPad and that's what I want. I know next year we're all going to get screwed with an updated Retina Display version but that's 365 days away. I'm sure I'll get my use out of it and pass it down to my parents or a loved one. iHappy!

One last thing... People comparing the iPad mini's screen to the iPad 2. I believe they were able to squeeze more pixels per inch into the iPad mini.

1024-by-768 resolution at
163 pixels per inch (ppi)iPad Mini vs 132 pixels per inch (ppi) iPad 2

AND IT HAS SIRI

Does anyone know if they limit iPad preorders? (based on past releases)

If they do, do they limit them to per household? or just per purchaser? or some other way?

Thanks.

The difference is still:

You USE your iPhone with 1 hand, that is, the other hand is free to do other stuff.

You hold your 9.7" iPad with two hands, or have it in your lap, or hold it in one hand for brief moments.

You hold the mini with 1 hand as the "default usage mode", not needing to have it on your lap for prolonged use.

Learn the difference between "HOLD with one hand", and "USE with one hand"
The S3 or other cell phones has nothing to do with this...

And on that note, my brother has quite large hands, and even he needs to shift his grip on the S3 to use it with 1 hand, that is, he needs to change his grip to reach different parts of the screen. Sure, you can use it with one hand, but not necessarily as easy as with smaller phones.

I'm not sure if you are trying to disagree with me, but I totally agree with you. I don't want a bigger iPhone because most of the time I am using my thumb to do stuff. But then again, as cool as the iPad mini seems to be, I won't be getting one simply because I can't find a use case scenario where I want to "hold" an I device with one hand but have only a 7.9" screen. But, I think plenty of people will buy it.

$299 iPod touch is a pocket device, has 32GB of space, and a retina display.
$329 iPad Mini is a tablet device, has 16GB of space, and no retina display.

Guy does have a point. The iPad Mini kinda negates the iPod Touch, at least from my perspective. Between the Mini for...I shudder to say it...media consumption, and the Nano as a nice, thin MP3 player, why even consider the Touch?

Do you really expect there will be any problems with availability? Why?

I just don't understand this logic. are you buying an mp3 player or are you buying a tablet? One you slide in your pocket and goto the gym the other you have to hold. its a very different product. I know it does some of the same things but i mean.......most people that want an ipod want it for music all the other stuff is just a bonus.

They must have used the same hand model guy who showed his thumbs in iPhone 5 commercial. Is he like 7" 8'?

I think the nano looks terrible.

If I was in the market for a good every day MP3 player with bells and whistles I would go with the iPod Touch...... BUT I have an iPhone so I will never need one lol.

Display resolution will keep me from buying.

I'd use this primarily for surfing. Websites can't be viewed fully in either 768 or 1024 horizontal pixels. This is why the Retina display in the full-size iPad was so important.

The iPad mini's display will go "Retina" next year or the year after. I'll stick with iPad 4 until then.

Depends on what kind of size matters to you. If you want something that can ride on your arm when you're out running or provide a reasonable viewing experience when you're on the bike in the gym, then iPod Touch is fine. It'll fit more easily in various pockets as well.

If you're more into casual web browsing/reading etc. and not too worried about finding pocket space, then new iPad would be suitable.

Size does matter, but it doesn't mean that larger is always better :)

Im just talking about the price for what you get. The iPod should be $199 and then the iPad mini could be more like $299. That would make more sense i think

Not that excisting or impressive. It's just a smaller iPad. Still runs the same OS.

Boooorrrriiinnnnngggg....

Now I gotta wait another 2 years for iPhone 6 and probably a Retina Air.

Screw Apple.

why wait? move on to another brand. cheers

Because they're two entirely different types of products.

One is a tablet, the other is a iPod that fits in your pants pocket. Is this so difficult to grasp?

BTW, I'm SO glad I sold my iPad 3 :) It was too heavy for my needs. iPad Mini, You're mine by Christmas time!

Ya im with u there. The iPad mini more portable and lighter! But if they dropped the prices on the iPod touches to $199 then the iPad mini would go for $250/300 which would make better pricing against the nexus and the other tablets but im sure ill be picking up the mini too

It all comes down to manufacturability. Too many products that are all after the same high-resolution lcds are going to outstrip the factories currently manufacturing the screens. There simply isn't enough supply. When there is a greater transition to these style screens in the broader market, when the technology improves, factories transition, etc. they'll be able to improve the coming generations of iPad mini. Sure, the Nexus and others have high-resolution screens, but the technology and manufacturing are different. They also aren't shipping in the same volumes.

1024 x 768...are you kidding me! Are we still in the 90's? There are too many better options than this. Too bad Apple.

All that talk about the lightness of the mini... the iPad 3rd Gen I'm using to write this is starting to feel like a brick.

you know I just picked mine up after watching ths hands on vid and couldn't agree more :(

Eh, if all you want is an MP3 player, it's great and not too expensive.

The Touch? Like you said, you don't need one because you've already got an iPhone. The iPad Mini? Does everything better than the Touch at about the same price. I'd much rather read a book, play a game, or watch a movie on the Mini. The Nano? It just plays MP3s, but it's also half the price.

The iPod Touch is kinda redundant.

I don't think you understand how "retina" works. The iPad 3 displays websites as if it were a 1024x768 device. The only difference is that image sizes are bilinearly scaled so that they appear the same size as if viewed on, say, an iPad 2.

You're not getting any more pixel real estate on an iPad 3 vs an iPad 2 when web browsing.
