I like the small look of it, not something I think i'll buy since I love reading magazines full sized on the 9.7", but I like it

I'm not sure if you are trying to disagree with me, but I totally agree with you. I don't want a bigger iPhone because most of the time I am using my thumb to do stuff. But then again, as cool as the iPad mini seems to be, I won't be getting one simply because I can't find a use case scenario where I want to "hold" an I device with one hand but have only a 7.9" screen. But, I think plenty of people will buy it.

I couldn't find a use for my iPad 2 when I had it, which is why I ended up selling it. Overall, I'm more a laptop person.

However, the mini appeals to me for a couple of reasons. I was in the market for a book reader, but didn't want to spend $100 on a device that only did one thing. I also hated the idea of having to attach a light to it (until the Paperwhite came out).

I like the idea of it being a book reader with all the functionality of an iPad. I can facetime with my daughter at college. I can watch videos from time-to-time. I can take it to meetings when I want to review spreadsheets and websites. And it can be a light one-handed book-reader.

I do wish the price had been more in the $249-299 range though...

Grrr. $329. That converts to £206. How much is it in the UK? £269, which is about $428.

Yeah, I know why, but it's still annoying.

Im kind of digging the Kindle Fire HD 7" more, especially for size. But I do want to get my hands on one before I decide.

$299 for an iPod touch but for $30 more I can get an iPad mini?? Why would I buy an iPod then? Doesnt make sense.

You probably wouldn’t—someone who wants a pocket tablet would. Different products for different peoples’ needs. Apple’s happy to meet them all!

Guy does have a point. The iPad Mini kinda negates the iPod Touch, at least from my perspective. Between the Mini for...I shudder to say it...media consumption, and the Nano as a nice, thin MP3 player, why even consider the Touch?

Yes, for consumers price is the only measuring stick. That's why I was torn between a new camaro or a new super duty truck. They are around the same price so they must be able to everything equally well, right? The camaro can easily handle hauling a 30' boat.

Yeah, the kindle fire has 169 ppi and the iPad mini has 163 ppi, what a total failure /sarcasm

Nope, the 7HD has 216 ppi. The screen is a bit smaller but besides higher ppi it's higher resolution as well (able to play 720 video, which the mini has to scale).

The design is nice but I'm not impressed with the display. I wish they could have gone with a higher resolution. Kindle fire has a better resolution than the this thing. Very disappointed apple.

What I think people fail to take into consideration is that Apple have always made great screens (or at least their suppliers who no doubt have a large input from Apple) and the brightness on their screens easily (in most cases) out performs that of other devices, this alone can make a huge difference in quality the naked eye sees.

I have looked at other devices with so called good screens but the brightness levels let it down.

Apple will of course bring out an iPad Mini with Retina display in the future but for now I think it's a great little device.

People get too hung up on specs.

disappointing

disappointing release really. The iPad mini industrial design is, as always, top notch and beautiful, but the hardware and price point are not so competitive.

iPad mini: 163 ppi res, 2-core processor, 16gb, front/rear camera, $329
Nexus 7: 216 ppi res, 4-core processor, 8gb, NFC, front camera $199

both have 10hr battery, 1.2mp front camera

iPad mini vs. Nexus 7
is a iPad mini, with a slower processer, lower resolution screen, no NFC, but rear camera and extra 8gb of memory really worth an extra $130 (65% of the nexus 7 cost)?

iPad mini vs. iPad
Isn't a full-size quad-core ipad worth an extra $70 (only 17.5% of the ipad mini cost)?

Tim Cook "can't even see the competition in the rear view mirror"... thats because they are right beside you.

I currently have a 1st Gen iPad. If I'm going to buy a new iPad, I think I need to see the iPad mini in person to decide.

I mainly use my 1st Gen iPad for reading books, especially in bed. And my biggest complaint has been its weight. I get tired of holding it and tend to prop it up on pillows. The iPad 4 is almost as heavy as the orig iPad. Apple had been making them lighter with the 2nd and 3rd gens, but now it's back up to being heavy again. So I'm a bit disappointed that upgrading to an iPad 4 would not mean a lighter iPad.

But the iPad 4 is a better tablet - better processing speed, better screen.

Ugh - tough decision, but I think I am leaning towards the mini, simply for a lighter device.

But then will it be annoying to watch a movie on the train using the iPad mini? Might it be a little too small for that?

I should also say that I have seen the new retina display iPads at the Apple Store and I don't see a striking difference between those displays and the one I have. Maybe I need to see them side by side - I should bring my iPad to the store when they have all the models on display.

Idiots everywhere.

HOLD IT with one hand. You either have your 9.7" iPad in your lap, on the stand or held with two hands. You never hold it with 1 hand for prolonged periods of time.

you USE your iphone with 1 hand.

I hold my iPad 3 with one hand a lot.

I think the nano looks terrible.

I got one a few days ago. I'm not a fan of the colors (I assume mostly women and kids will buy those) but the black one is gorgeous. Just amazing hardware, and the touch screen interface is great.

Like many apple devices, it's one that's easy to jump to conclusions on...then change your mind once you have it in your hands.

And how many dedicated apps are there available for the Nexus 7?

The device can be specced up through the roof but if there's little available for it, it becomes a pointless exercise.

Just for the record I checked out the Nexus 7 the other day and thought it was a pretty neat device but the lack of software is the biggest issue for me.

The difference is still:

You USE your iPhone with 1 hand, that is, the other hand is free to do other stuff.

You hold your 9.7" iPad with two hands, or have it in your lap, or hold it in one hand for brief moments.

You hold the mini with 1 hand as the "default usage mode", not needing to have it on your lap for prolonged use.

Learn the difference between "HOLD with one hand", and "USE with one hand"
The S3 or other cell phones has nothing to do with this...

And on that note, my brother has quite large hands, and even he needs to shift his grip on the S3 to use it with 1 hand, that is, he needs to change his grip to reach different parts of the screen. Sure, you can use it with one hand, but not necessarily as easy as with smaller phones.

I can use the Galaxy Note (1) with one hand.

I can hold the iPad (big) with one hand.

i was curious about the gpu cores.

is it a quad-core similar to the 3rd-gen ipad? or is it similar to the ipad 2?

I think we know how the iPad 5 is going to look like!

I think the iPad 5 will have a similar look to this iPad mini, pencil thin, narrow bezil, stereo speakers...

I hold my iPad 3 with one hand a lot.

You've completely missed his point. You don't use the iPad with one hand, unless it's lying on your lap or a table. You might HOLD it with one hand, but you use it with two hands. The new iPhone 5, despite its larger screen, can still be USED with one hand. What this means is that you can chop off one of your hands and still use the iPhone 5. The iPad mini? Not so much. Don't go chopping.

You are thinking of the original Kindle Fire.

The Kindle Fire HD is 16GB and has 216 PPI.

Not to mention, the iPad mini is 61% more expensive. ($199 vs $329)

Massive disappointment for me on the mini. I was ready to add to cart on this one too. No retina, and much worse resolution vs competitors. Old processor going on 2 years old with only 512 ram. EPIC FAIL APPLE!!!

Tell that to the people who had the 2008 aluminium MacBook
