People aren't all one size and now neither are iPads. I'm wondering what some people really expected from this device. The mini isn't for big guys any more than the full size iPad is right for a kid. A smaller person will do better with the smaller size. It'll be great in schools. Women will love being able to stash it in a handbag.

The comments about the iPhone and the iPad mini and being one-handed... for the love of.... I feel like I've come across the comments section for a YouTube video. The stupid, it burns!

They made the screen wider and taller than is competitors as demonstrated in the Keynote to an android tablet.

But please tell me then if this iPad mini is being advertized as as on hand device why in the hell if my iPhone 5 stuck with the same width as the 4S?

ipad mini is a hold in one hand device. ie for reading in bed. You still need two hands to use it. iphone is a use with one hand device.

Not sure where quality was thrown into the equation but as you mentioned it...are you suggesting the iPad Mini is not a quality product because if you are that's even funnier!!

I wasn't saying that. Compared to the N7 and Fire, it's quite inferior in both specs and price. If N7 and and fire marketed their product a little more, it would be a blowout in the mini 7-8" tab department.

Disappointing Price

The price premium of the iPad Mini is significant and allows Amazon and Google to continue to build out their positions. Dumb move, Apple.

I also expect Apple to announce a miss relative to iPad estimates on their upcoming earnings call. As several analysts noted, the keynote from today hinted at slightly lower iPad sales for last quarter. I think the stock may dip below $600 on Thursday. However, the outlook is still positive for those with a longer-term investment window.

At $329, which is significantly more than the Kindle Fire HD (with worse resolution) and the Nexus 7, and being only slightly cheaper than the iPad 2, and with the same functionality as the 2, who is this product even for? For the life of me, I cannot come up with an answer to that question.

It's for people who want a smaller tablet and who don't want some plastic, Android, knock-off garbage. My feed was full of friends today who have wanted an iPad, but found it too big for their use-case. I think Apple will sell as many of these as they can make.

When put side by side, the iPad Mini will blow away N7 and Fire in the terms of "that looks nice" and "it feels great" departments. Combined with the retail penetration and the existing ecosystem of Apple, it'll probably sell a truckload and outsell N7 and Fire. Also while it has less resolution, from what we've heard from the first impressions it probably outperforms N7 and Fire in other display qualities.

Having said all that personally I'll wait for the Retina version though. I already have too many tablets!

Grrr. $329. That converts to £206. How much is it in the UK? £269, which is about $428.

Yeah, I know why, but it's still annoying.

How many more times must we repeat this?

$329 is without taxes, which translates to £206.55 without VAT. This comes out at £247.86 including VAT.

The other £20 covers admin charges and the need to pre-empt currency fluctuations. Slightly higher than I'd like but acceptable...

Next big thing: The iPad Nano!

Wait, that would essentially be an iPod Touch, there you go people that keep complaining that it is too big, an iPod Touch will fit in and can be used with one hand...

what is the point of this thin??

On my iPad 3, i can at leas still type on it; even allowing me to type up some documents or paragraphs(like this post), and be more efficient on it in general. I wouldnt type up an entire book on its screen, but it actualy functions as a relative laptop replacement, and can even be more productive than one in many spots especialy on the go. Not to mention the screen also allows me to look at it longer, thanks to the screen PPI stressin my eyes less over time, and also fit a lot more on it both due to its size, and resolution and ppi.

The iPad to me is the Macintosh reborn in some ways. This just is what many tried to criticize the original iPad for, for what it seemd to be on the surface, but realy wasnt (and what all the kindle fires etc actualy were). "Watch movies, play games, toy more than functionality". User input seems now totaly out of the window, yet its still large compared to somethin pocketable. A Useless device in comparison.

...

Steve Jobs would have never allowed this.

REALLY? I thought that's the point of the two grids around the doc connector... no?

No idea why there are two grids, it wouldn't surprise me if the second one serves no purpose and is just for looks. Plus doing stereo but putting both speakers right next to each other on the same side would defeat the whole purpose.

this is the perfect gift for my parents

this is perfect gift for my parents for xmas guys i was actually looking forward for the prize of this ipad especially since both of my parents are getting into computer more than anything this is perfect for them the size is great everything look great and light which help. so apple did their thing as usual hopefully they won't sell out like the iphone 5

Apple has done a wonderful job of breaking many people of their slavish obsession with specs and price. Not all. But many. It doesn't matter if other tablets are cheaper and have better specs. The iPad mini is aimed at people who already want an iPad.

The mini is a clear shot at the education market. iBooks Author + mini in every kids hand. That's the vision. The full size iPad is too big for a kid. It's cumbersome. I watch my 5 & 7 year old niece and nephew handle an iPad and its simply too big. Shrink and lighten it up a bit and you've opened up a whole new market.

price-wise you can look at it this way. Amazon and Google are selling their tablets at or below cost to try to get you into their ecosystem. Amazon makes $ off their book and wallmart monoploy model, Google via selling you to advertisers. Apple makes money off their hardware profit margins up front. So Apple will probably always be more, esepcially since google and Amazon are desperate to gain marketshare. So yes...the initial "bargain" is probably one of those tablets. So go ahead, buy a tablet that has no apps, poor security, will be abandoned in a year for OS updates, and spams you with ads.

Personally, I'm super excited to go into a Best Buy again to try all these new 7"-ish tablets out side by side come Christmas time....

I know which one I want, but that doesn't keep me for wanting to see them and compare for myself. Still the biggest advantage of brick-and-mortar stores.

Somehow watching a video of someone else playing with a new toy doesn't really cut it....

The more people complain on the forums, the more successful the product is going to be. Judging by the threads I've seen, the iPad mini will be a huge success.

My wife is a non-techy average computer user. She was using (and I wish I was kidding here) an LG netbook for the past few years. It was a piece of ****, and recently died. I showed her the iPad mini and she can't wait to get one. The price is right, and she can fit it in her purse. She doesn't care about Retina Display. She enjoys using my iPad (3rd gen), but always thought it was too big. The iPad mini suits her needs perfectly.

I'm a teacher. I can tell you all right away that this product is going to kill in the education market. It's the perfect size for kids, it does everything a regular iPad does and, more importantly, the price is right. My school can buy one iPad mini for each student for about $76,000. We can become a 1:1 school for less than a third of the cost of a new playground (seriously, those things cost around $250K). The iPad mini has the potential to revolutionize education even more than the regular iPad.

When Phil Schiller kept saying: "Blah blah blah... iPad Mini is so much better than the iPad 2 blah blah blah" I thought he was mistaking iPad 2 with the new iPad.

No retina display & $329?

I would agree that that price is a slight issue but that's no surprise with Apple...you have to admit the quality of their products including attention to detail is amazing.

As for the specs...come on...as I mentioned earlier people get too hung up on the specs for a tablet device. What do people really do on their tablets, does it really need to be an all singing device with the best specs possible, essentially it's a digital consumption device, it's not like people are using their tablets to send up the next NASA shuttle!

From a gaming perspective the specs are likely to come into play but personally I'm not overly keen on playing games on my iPad, I feel I get much more involved when playing on my PS3 and have just realised as I'm typing is quite an obvious statement!

Pretty obvious. Kids. Education. The full size iPad is too big for grade and middle school kids. You're going to see a lot of school systems buying large quantities of iPad minis. It's pretty obvious from some of the education references made in today's presentation that Apple takes this market very seriously.

What I don't understand is what some people were expecting? Seriously, it was going to be a smaller iPad. What else did you think it would do? Raise the dead?

Smaller people in general will probably appreciate having the choice. The overall experience isn't compromised but the hardware is more manageable in the hand. And let's not forget women. They carry handbags. The iPad is too big to fit, but the iPad mini...

Yes, for consumers price is the only measuring stick. That's why I was torn between a new camaro or a new super duty truck. They are around the same price so they must be able to everything equally well, right? The camaro can easily handle hauling a 30' boat.

A lot of words, a lot of snark, absolutely no point made cept OLOL CARZ!

It isn't about price. Tell me exactly why someone would buy the iPod Touch when they can get an iPad Mini for just a little more that's better across the board at doing what the Touch does?

Slightly more portability? Is that it?
