$299 for an iPod touch but for $30 more I can get an iPad mini?? Why would I buy an iPod then? Doesnt make sense.

Oh dear sweet baby jesus. iPod is totally different. You can fit an iPod in your pocket, it weighs less, it is incapable of LTE. etc. etc. etc. it is incredibly sad that humans can be so dull minded.

Massive disappointment for me on the mini. I was ready to add to cart on this one too. No retina, and much worse resolution vs competitors. Old processor going on 2 years old with only 512 ram. EPIC FAIL APPLE!!!

:D Cracked up...let's see just what an EPIC FAIL it will be....

Wasn't impressed by the specs - but am impressed after seeing the first hands on - it's ridiculous thin! Probably I'll be getting one...

Tell that to the people who had the 2008 aluminium MacBook

Point taken.

I did have one and the screen was still great apart from the issues surrounding it and it wasn't all machines.

Overall Apple screens have always been very good.

"One hand use"?

So why the big deal about the 4" iPhone, didn't Apple say it was the perfect size for one hand use, the iPad Mini is much bigger!

That was just Apple's way of saying, "we didn't update much, but we did make the screen a bit bigger to the ideal size for one handed operation."

Didn't realize my 4.75" phone couldn't be used with one hand . . .

I don't think you understand how "retina" works. The iPad 3 displays websites as if it were a 1024x768 device. The only difference is that image sizes are bilinearly scaled so that they appear the same size as if viewed on, say, an iPad 2.

You're not getting any more pixel real estate on an iPad 3 vs an iPad 2 when web browsing.
I do when I jailbreak it. Hopefully the Dev Team will work quickly! :D

Man, if they announced this 2 weeks ago, I definitely would've preordered, even with its non-retina display, last-gen cpu, and not very affordable pricing. But I have purchased a used Nexus for that same period of time, and I am >this< close to be being converted to Android.

And don't forget, a 32GB Nexus 7 is going to be available on the 29th of this month for $250.

$250 vs $429

(btw, I still laugh at the $100 jump to go from 16GB to 32GB in iOS Products)

And how many dedicated apps are there available for the Nexus 7?

The device can be specced up through the roof but if there's little available for it, it becomes a pointless exercise.

Just for the record I checked out the Nexus 7 the other day and thought it was a pretty neat device but the lack of software is the biggest issue for me.

What apps are you looking for? I've got many apps on my 7 and haven't ran into a single problem.

Apple made that point clear at the keynote. I always wonder whether apps are still such a big selling point. If I look at my iPhone, the App Store appears sated. The top sellers are the same for almost a year and hardly change, while many new apps are either copies or lack the quality of being used on a regular basis. For me, the usage of new apps has been reduced to a minimum even though I browse the App Store quite often. I think people tend to think too bad of competitors' stores although it is not always justified. Android is a solid system and has loads of useful apps as well.

They made the screen wider and taller than is competitors as demonstrated in the Keynote to an android tablet.

But please tell me then if this iPad mini is being advertized as a one hand device, why in the hell is my iPhone 5 stuck with the same width as the 4S?

wanna bet ?

Honestly, this is so true. The people complaining about retina are just arguing for specs for the sake of it. The screen will look very good. Yea, its not the best in the industry but Apple didnt become successful by throwing specs at you. The retina resolutions are overkill in my opinion. There is no perfect ppi but this is solid.

Hmmm, I think it's also about making excuses for their not delivering high-quality in the screen. Yeah, it's the iPad 2's resolution but in a smaller form factor, but they could have done so much more. I was hoping for high-res for one reason, I have PDFs for school to read and I'm looking for a 7" (ish) tablet that I can easily and enjoyably read these documents. The full-sized iPad is just simply too large, and doesn't well complement my 11" MBA.

I need to look at the Nook (the highest res 7" device) and the new mini and see whether I can live with the mini's resolution. One thing in its favour is that I owned a gen 1 iPad and have loads of iPhone apps too which are both unused and were much enjoyed that I would dearly love to use again. The iPad 4 is interesting, but again, it's (I think) just too large for my needs and wants. Quite a dilemma.

I'm a developer myself and certainly don't think competitors stores are bad, the point I was trying to make was the lack of device specific apps that are available for Android tablet devices. The issue surrounding Android development is the inconsistency due to the amount of devices available.

Its amazing how people still go on about specs. Hasn't iOS been out long enough for this to stop?

Just saw your comment on Engadget too. I can't believe we're having to explain this to so many people. The iPhone can be USED with one hand. You can chop off one of your hands and still use the iPhone. You can HOLD the iPad mini with one hand, something that you cannot do comfortably with the other iPads for extended periods of use. So don't go chopping.

Who is this product for? So bizarre.

At $329, which is significantly more than the Kindle Fire HD (with worse resolution) and the Nexus 7, and being only slightly cheaper than the iPad 2, and with the same functionality as the 2, who is this product even for? For the life of me, I cannot come up with an answer to that question.
