First Impressions From New iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max Users

I am quite pleased with the Series 4. I have one major complaint that I have always found frustrating. It still takes forever just to set it up and install apps. Doesn't matter if new or from a backup. I hope Apple can find a way to improve this flaw.
Well, if we’re talking regular idiot customers, a TON of them signed up for one of the “new phone every year” plans, so the “killer feature” for them is that “it exists.”
No one is saying that a phone camera can ever be as good as a traditional camera that does not have the size constraints of a phone. What am saying, is that the advantages of the two lenses are the same at the scale of the phone as they are to the (D)SLR or mirrorless. It is better, and certainly more reliable (in the life of a phone) to have 2 prime lenses than it is to have 1 zoom. And that is why they bother creating a “Frankenstein” smartphone camera, because it is the better solution for the highest quality images for that given formfactor.
Here comes my plea that Im sure its not gonna change anything! Guys! Stop buying these phones! If you need a new phone go iPhone 8 or wait for XR. Buying the phones in the 1200-1500 EUR range is insane. That is not good for anyone!
It is not good for consumers as they have significant price hikes from year to year. I understand that we pay premium for the privilege of using MacOS and iOS but Apple is going too far. They testing waters how high can they go to increase the profits and maintain market share. As long as people are buying them in millions nothing would change.
It is not good for environment as we are producing tons of waste just in the name of having so called newest and greatest. It makes no sense. Our previous models are equally good!
Its not good for Apple as they will get lazy and not even try to be more reasonable with the customers. Why would they if they can sell everything at any price point? They dont even include proper cables and charger in the 1200EUR phone. Thats telling! And as I mentioned at some point I find it insulting.
Its not good for society as the social pressure to have the newest gadgets is enormous. And I bet you that a lot of people is buying things they cant afford just not to be seen as "worse". Look at the post about the delays. People are getting furious about 2 day shipment delay. It is a complete corruption of values. I could go on and on but I hope you get my point.
I payed 5000USD for the MBP and although i find it overpriced I tend to keep my laptops for many many years and use them for work so that somehow justifies the spending. But phones? They slowly creeping up with the prices of AW too. On every front starting from the hardware through the Apple care.

Why are you assuming consumers are evaluating what Apple does as a result of our purchases? We don't think that way. if we want a device and we can afford it, we buy it. Nobody cares what the manufacturer does as a result of you buying that device.
If Apple starts offering things people don't want, their sales will suffer. Let them worry about that. You are emotionally invested in this for some reason. For a company that has made very strong efforts to be environmentally responsible, you should hope every company followed Apple in this regard. And if their products are too expensive for you, just stop buying them. It is just that simple. Let us keep buying their products if we think they are a good value and stop worrying about what society does.

If you want to have finer control over your bokeh you should definitely check out an app called Focos. It even lets you choose where the blur starts and ends with a depth map of the photo!
What iOS were you using the last time you backed it up?
My last back up with iOS 11 went fine.
Today, when I went to back up again under iOS 12, it required me to download software.
Listen. Its easy. People have no idea what they want. 99% of them. They are driven by marketing as they do not possess neither knowledge nor commitment to understand.
I am not overly invested. Just think you dont see bigger picture, and sometimes I need to say how I feel about the direction of society
Affording is not an issue - the issue is that sometimes its wise to think about the things you can afford taking under consideration the long term consequences of your desires.

Speak for yourself. People make decisions about what to do with their money. Stop making it sound like it's mind control when you are upset at how much things cost that you want.
I feel you dont understand. Its not about the price per se. Its about how we got to the point and where are we going with that kind of market. And its not only Apple guilty. Its us as well..

The A12 is the best chip ever made by Apple untill next year when the A13 will be the bomb.
Each year we're getting fooled by Apple, Samsung and Co to buy the next big thing just to be able to open Facebook 2 seconds faster and do an ECG with our wrist watches or cool photos of everything we encounter with every 10 steps we take.
Marketing and manipulation is making us miss a lot of important things.
Got myself an iPhone 8 last year and I'm gonna stick with it untill it breaks.
The OP was asking if the XS Max had the special landscape mode that the Plus models had, which it and the XR do (though the X and XS don’t). Then another poster started talking about rotation lock, which is why I responded that I didn’t think we were talking about the same thing.

I was supposed to pick up my new iPhone XR Max at the Albuquerque store. I took off work early to pick it up around 1:30 PM. When I got there they said their system was down, but could stand in what pointed out was a long line. I am a 63 year old disabled veteran and trouble standing for very long. I asked her how long it would take and was told probably about two hours. I asked if I came back in two hours if my place in line would be saved. I was told no it was first come first serve. This made no since because I was there before anyone who now comes in after me, it's not my fault their system is down. They don't see it that way. If I leave I'LL HAVE TO RESTART IN THE BACK OF THE LINE. I love apple products, but their store sucks for elderly disabled people. No place to sit down. No accountability for their system going down.
Can somebody please comment on how Face ID on XS compares to Touch id in terms of accuracy and response time? How much faster is Face ID on XS than on X?

The iPhone 5 and 5S weren't symmetrical either. There were fewer speaker holes on one side due to the headphone jack.
This isn't an issue just for "professional" users. This is an issue for all users. Non-professional photographer could always use an ultra-wide angle or a longer telephoto. I believe Nokia is coming out with a 5 lens camera soon as well.
Also, professional users have no problem using smartphones for a lot of their work. They know that it's not the camera, but the talent behind it that makes them pros.
i got the red iPhone 8. only complaint is the small battery, but i LOVE touch ID and the red color. it does everything i need!

The camera knows the focal distance, but it doesn't know how far away the rest of the image is.
Take for instance a ruler, if I focus on the half way mark and hold the ruler 10 degrees from the focal plane, most of the ruler will be in focus with a gradient of focus along its length being less noticable.
If I hold the ruler at 80 degrees from the focal plane, most of the ruler will be out of focus and just a few cm of it will be in focus.
The software cannot tell what angle you are holding the ruler.
You can develop AI systems that could be trained to find aspects of a photo that resemble a ruler and use that to try to work out the depth in a photo, replace ruler for edges of a car/road etc and you can start to make educated guesses, but they are just that. So I can see it improving with time, but it is a very difficult problem to solve and cannot be applied the same in every photo. Some will work better than others.
There are other techniques you can use such as focus stacking where you take a lot of photos in quick succession and stitch them together. This would allow the photographer to adjust the photo after the shot i.e you know some depth information for several point in the photo. This is probably the most promising field, but is tricky to do on moving subjects such as people or plants with moving branches/stems.
Another technique is to use two lenses, probably of the same focal length that are further apart than the current lenses on the iPhone. A 'loosely similar technique' to what they use on face unlock to show that the camera is looking at a 3d scene albeit that they are using projected dots rather than two camera lens.
Meantime we are at the point where the blur is even and will trick the mind in to thinking something is wrong with the photo (depending on the photo).

You called it the smallest incremental upgrade in S cycle history; I obviously disagree. But I’d be happy to hear why you think all the other S cycles were better.
I got my Xs Max 256 Silver today and replaced by iPhone 7 Plus. Love the size and speed of the device. I really like the phone. But deep down I kinda feel like I shouldn’t keep this $1,250 phone considering I have a perfectly good 2 year old 7 Plus is running great on iOS 12. Honestly, I may take it back if my conscious gets to me.
The A12 includes the GPU as well. The CPU is 30% faster in practice because it doesn't throttle as soon as the A11, and the GPU is 50-100% faster. It's massive.

Not true at all. Apple rarely if ever has GPU performance double between generations. The A12 is unique in that regard.

30% faster CPU in practice, and a GPU that is nearly twice as fast? That is MONUMENTAL and has never been done in iPhone history before. Normal people will in fact see a huge difference if they regularly do anything involving graphics on their phone.
The neural engine is also something like 7x faster.
