Here comes my plea that Im sure its not gonna change anything! Guys! Stop buying these phones! If you need a new phone go iPhone 8 or wait for XR. Buying the phones in the 1200-1500 EUR range is insane. That is not good for anyone!
It is not good for consumers as they have significant price hikes from year to year. I understand that we pay premium for the privilege of using MacOS and iOS but Apple is going too far. They testing waters how high can they go to increase the profits and maintain market share. As long as people are buying them in millions nothing would change.
It is not good for environment as we are producing tons of waste just in the name of having so called newest and greatest. It makes no sense. Our previous models are equally good!
Its not good for Apple as they will get lazy and not even try to be more reasonable with the customers. Why would they if they can sell everything at any price point? They dont even include proper cables and charger in the 1200EUR phone. Thats telling! And as I mentioned at some point I find it insulting.
Its not good for society as the social pressure to have the newest gadgets is enormous. And I bet you that a lot of people is buying things they cant afford just not to be seen as "worse". Look at the post about the delays. People are getting furious about 2 day shipment delay. It is a complete corruption of values. I could go on and on but I hope you get my point.
I payed 5000USD for the MBP and although i find it overpriced I tend to keep my laptops for many many years and use them for work so that somehow justifies the spending. But phones? They slowly creeping up with the prices of AW too. On every front starting from the hardware through the Apple care.

OK. My rant is over :)

A famous economist once said if something can’t continue, it won’t.

Pleading with folks in any forum about any topic to change their behavior because you think it’s bad for society is a fools errand. Only millions of people acting in their own self interest changes anything.

Their are tons of alternatives to Apple products in all categories they serve. In the end people will make the cost benefit analysis re any purchase using their own list of criteria.

Got my Xs Max today. After using it for a couple of minutes and then going back to my previous 7 (not plus) I was like "WTF... this is tiny...". I guess I will enjoy the huge screen and phone after all.

I can’t get over just how much louder and better the speakers are in my XS Max over my 7-plus. It’s staggeringly loud.

Did anyone else get their XS with an completely empty battery? I thought my new phone was dead until I plugged in the cable and waited for an minute to get the battery empty icon! Not a nice first experience.

ha ha thank you so much!! I'll tell the boys ( Zeus and Styx ) you think they're gorgeous!

You mentioned you were on the 7+ and then went to the X but missed the + size so you did the XS Max this round. I'm not sure if you realized it but the screen size of the X was 5.8 compared to the 5.5 inch screen on the 7+ so you didn't sacrifice screen size by going to the X like you made it sound.

If you are going from any iPhones with the LCD screen to the OLED, I think you will be very happy with the difference. I compare my work iPhone 8 to my personal Galaxy S8 and its like night and day in terms of the screen, the iPhone 8 just looks ancient.

My wife just got the Galaxy S9 on a contract deal for £33 a month including 15GB of data over 24 months which is a total cost of £792. The equivalent iPhone XS deal is £58 a month with £70 up front so a total cost of £1462 which is getting on for double the price.

Sure, the 'GeekBench' app will tell me the XS is more powerful but there is no way on earth the average user is going to tell the difference. If Apple is your thing due to the OS then great, I have an iPad pro myself and love it but real world use.....I simply cannot see the justification for the price difference between the phones.

If the iPhone was the same price as the Samsung Galaxies, I would likely have the iPhone due to the fact I have a Macbook and an iPad pro but £60 odd quid a month for a phone is beyond what I am prepared to pay.

Got my iPhone XS 512 GB (plus leather case) three hours ago. I picked it up in the shiny new (okay… since Feb 2018) local Apple Store here in Vienna, Austria. The service was excellent. There was quite a crowd, the most intensive event since opening according to a salesman. I was 15 min early to the appointment but that was no problem, I got my pre-ordered device immediately.

Could make some video shots right outside the shop. It is a windy day so you'll hear some wind noises. But it's stereo! The case doesn't affect the sound quality although the genius couldn't tell me where exactly the microphones are located (so they don't get covered). The fcp stereo indicator shows well balanced (l/r) sound anyway.

Shot and uploaded all in a hurry:

The thing in the top right is the same focal distance as the dog. That's why it's sharp. Cameras don't focus to an object, they use the object to focus to a distance.
Correct, but the thing is the iPhone is adding fake blur and it doesn't know what objects are at what distance apart from the focal plane. What I was thinking was that that object looked to me to be slightly behind the dog but was still almost in focus like it was tricking my mind. But the photographer said it was close to the dog like you say.

I think you may have uploaded to Youtube in a very low resolution there as it looks terrible on my screen.

Looks fine on mine, unless I go full screen. But the video is a 720p video, so full screen on my 4K display it looks just a bit fuzzy. It certainly isn't a 4K video, so view it in a smaller window.

This may take some minutes or hours. The quality should be 1080p60. Be patient please. I uploaded it some minutes ago.

It shows as 720p60 on YouTube.

I think the quality is pretty amazing for a P&S that's effectively free and fits in your pocket.
We can talk about pro cameras and lenses, but even a really good L or VR lens will have a part of its range that's ragged, they have to be huge to collect light and be heavy and have lots of elements to reduce chromatic and spherical abberation.
Look at a detailed analysis of a DSLR lens and you'll see how much better the centre performs than the edge and these tiny phone lenses have incredible resolution because they are effectlvely like the centre of pro lenses (although they could still be better).
Plus, we throw away a huge amount of definition from a pro camera we will never use. A screen uses, what, about 3mp.
And the colour gamut of printers is minute. They make decisions about how to interpret the wider colour gamut approximate it and throw away the rest. That's for the tiny proportion or images that are printed anyway.
As for the bokeh, well that varies with focal length and from lens to lens too. Some people switch off stabilisation because that messes it up. You can't really judge from one shot but it looks pretty good to me.
A grab shot in really good light with an image viewed on screen, I doubt you'd see any difference -although the iPhone does seem to add a polarizing filter as standard by the look of it and you might not like that.
In really low light the iPhone wins hands down as you'd have real trouble seeing let alone focusing (I've got about $4000 of DSLR and lenses and I can't beat the iPhone in low light with that). I have an app that takes about 30 seconds to process in low light and the results are frankly astonishing. I'd need a tripod and have to nail the exposure or shoot in RAW and post process to get the same result.
I reckon I could still get better results with the DSLR with a portrait lighting set-up and and a good 1.4 prime, but not by much and probably not with a grab shot, and probably not without a bit of post processing.
And let's not forget Cartier-Bresson didn't use a pro camera.
Have you ever seen the camera Ansel Adams used?
I think they would have got amazing results with this iPhone.

And in any case, the best camera is always going to be the one you have with you.
My most recent of many SLRs and DSLRs is a Nikon D7000 that I rarely use anymore, for many of the reasons you note above. I especially like my iPhone X’s low light performance and the ability to get within inches of a subject without needing macro adapters or lenses. The only thing I really miss is the telephoto on my 18-200 zoom. For wide angle, panorama mode or photo stitching often suffices.

It shows as 1080p60 on YouTube right now for me. Okay. I'll leave now and make some 4K60 shots as long as there is sunlight…

Like many, I am going through the ‘new iPhone’ envy. But, I just have to practice self control and stick with my iPhone X. I watch all these reviews about great camera, blah, blah. The thing is, I don’t take pictures that often to justify getting the new version. As we all know, this is a ‘S’ release, so we are likely to see a more substantial upgrade in 2019. The thing is, when go back to my usage pattern and the fact that Apple is finding less and less meaningful technology to get users to upgrade, I feel even more justified in changing my upgrade strategy.

This time, I’m looking to wait out until fall 2020. I really want my iPhone X purchase to feel spread out a bit. 1,300 was a lot to spend.

By 2020 (if I’m still alive), I want to upgrade everything to larger models: 15 inch MBP, 12 inch OLED iPad Pro (hopefully) and iPhone Mac rev 3) and Apple Watch 6.

For this year, I might just pick up a Qi wireless charger and AirPod.

Last year, I upgraded from the 5S to the X and those people who are upgrading from the 7-family to the XS/XS Max will definitely be overwhelmed by the display, like I was. The colors actually are more vibrant and they do certainly "pop" because of the OLED display. Staring at tried and true, and less vibrant LCD displays like from the previous series of phones and going to the OLED display for the 1st time is certainly a memorable experience. You get so captivated by the display. I am happy for those of you who decided to stave off from upgrading last year and are enjoying the more refined X-series experience this year. Enjoy your new phones!

Im coming from 6. I have two phones waiting on my desk right now. Will open when I go home :D

So where does it stop then? Hexa camera? Octa Camera? Full back of the phone covered with cameras? To be honest, even dual lens I find it a bit stupid. I would rather have one camera that works brilliantly, then multi mediocre cameras.
For starters, the depth of an optical zoom camera lens plus the fragility of the zoom mechanism makes your desire impracticable in the banged-up life of a skinny phone.. More importantly, using fixed lenses is actually better, and can yield better results. In professional cameras and lenses, a fixed focal length lens is normally preferred and typically has better optical quality across the image. The fixed focal length lens is referred to as a “prime” lens. A zoom is just a more affordable option to have multiple focal lengths in one lens - especially if shooting in various locations. Any professional photographer will have a couple of “prime” lenses in his bag, especially for portraiture photography, and swap lenses depending on his needs. It is incorrect (or at least not well informed) to consider 2 lenses to be “mediocre” compared to a single zoom that covers the same focal lengths.
