So do we have confirmation that folders are present in the new app? For example, I can make a folder called 2014 and then put an album for every month inside of it? Secondly, can you nest a folder within a folder? (Aperture allowed this)

Thanks! (any screenshots of this would be great)

All of the tech sites were very specific that installing photos does not mess with your current iphoto or aperture installs.

Oh I see what it did. It replaced it on my dock but iPhoto still exists in my Applications folder. Sorry for the wrong info!

Any chance we can see a screen of the General options too?

Here you go:

Yes, yes, and yes. I just confirmed this.

I wonder if eyefi will work well with this. There is a trick to getting Lightroom to automatically import pictures as they are taken using an eyefi card. Handy for instant review in a large screen.

I agree with that. Dropbox and one drive are all excellent alternatives to iCloud. Actually better considering that they're much more generous with space. Amazon is doing the same as well. iCloud isnt even in the same ballpark right now. The one thing they do offer is a seamless way to automatically upload photos and some people will want that. But for most people, this thing is not terribly compelling if you have to buy space to use it meaningfully.

To add, Dropbox, Google Drive, One Drive, etc. offer automatic mobile uploads.

Adobe Lightroom has a bunch of plugins which allow you to sync with cloud services (I actually use SmugMug). This has been possible for years, so, as far as I can see, there is nothing than iCloud offers, other than higher prices and more restrictions.

Really? More so than iMovie? I never found iPhoto partuicularly intuitive, but that's nothing compared to the incredibly frustrating and useless iMovie.

I resurrected an old iMac just so that I can use iMovieHD, which no longer works in Yosemite. Apple has a habit of downgrading or removing useful features for the sake of something shiny and new.

Shouldn't form follow function? It's the opposite with Apple.

I have used Picasa for my photos for years, and their web albums feature was great. Unfortunately, Google is doing the same thing as Apple. Google plus is a confusing mess, but at least it works, unlike iCloud photos.

Those other services don't do what iCloud does. For example, with this new Photos app, you can edit photos nondestructively and all edits sync to all your devices automatically. It's a true synced cloud library that does not rely on you accessing a website. Photos are stored both natively and locally on all your devices and in the cloud. Plus you still have access at iCloud.com to all your photos.

I don't think there is another solution out there like this.

I'm new to all this because I've never used iPhoto. I always used the finder and folders to organize my photos.

My question is, can I still organize my photos in this finder/folder based system (easier to work with with Lightroom) but use the new photos app if I want to browse through all my photos? Can I direct the app to where my photos are?

jumped to the end of this... So you mean to tell me in order to use it you HAVE to store your photos in the cloud? or is it still possible to take 50 steps to get the photos off your phone or device and edit them in the new photos app?

Why get rid of events, quick fix, and other iPhoto features

I'm a Realtor. I take lots of photos of lots of houses. I bring them into my iMac and iPhoto and from there I auto create an Event which would be "Photos for 123 Jones Street". Then I have the option of selecting Quick Fix, Effects or Adjust. I don't understand why Apple has chosen to do away with these options. Where will all of my Events go? Will they be turned into Albums automatically? You can split or join Events. Will you be able to do the same with Albums.

I also don't like the fact that it's either all or nothing. If I want to do the iCloud backup I should be asked every time I take a photo if I want to "upload to iCloud". There are lots of photos I use in business that I see no reason to make available to my iPhone or iPad. And the same with more personal photos. We should always have a choice. Maybe we will but from what I have read so far it doesn't appear that way.

Too often Apple gets rid of a tried and test program and replaces it with something new that isn't always as good as what they are getting rid of. If you are going to bring a new product on the market it should be to add features, not get rid of the ones that millions of users have used and appreciated for many years. Change just for the sake of change is not good. I'm sure there are some improvements but don't throw the baby out with the bath water!

If I understood you correctly you are saying that all of the thousands of photos I have taken are now going to be not only stored at iCloud.com but on each of my iOS devices? That's doesn't make any sense. I shouldn't have to use up valuable space on my iPhone and iPad in order to use the new Photos with its iCloud.com integration. I hope that you are wrong.

Quick Fix, Effects and Adjust are still there, just under the Edit menu.

Events are now in Albums > iPhoto events. You can't split events.

Meh

A decent side-grade to iPhoto... I guess?

Replacement for Aperture? Hell no. Anyone at Apple that thinks so, I want some of whatever you're smoking...

Sure, this is great for the everyday person, but I still can't believe Apple abandoned pro users with the sudden discontinuation of the development of Aperture.

Long time Apple fan for many reasons, but this sure isn't one of them.

Not happy,
Bryan

PROS :

Speed - Photos finally brings justice to the performance of my 1-year-old $3000 iMac.
Events are gone - Should I make an event or an album? I am not dealing with this question anymore. It's an album.
Folders and subfolders - Definitely helps sorting my albums in the left pane.
Third-party filters - More to come soon (i.e. Pixelmator)

CONS :

Geolocalize my pictures on a map - Where did that option go anyways?!?
Basic video filters and effects - The filters & effects I can apply on my photos? I want them on my videos, too.
A little "hoompf" in the interface - It's gray. It's dull.

Well, so far, I'm loving Photos.app. It's fast. They preserved practically everything I used in iPhoto (including the projects and faces).

The new auto crop is fantastic. And this is just the beta.

Now, why couldn't the new iTunes, iMovie, Pages, Keynote and Numbers have been this good?

Why no window title?

I *hate* apps that have no window title (like Safari in Yosemite).
It's so awkward, there's no place to "grab" the window.

Makes sense, but if I want to keep photos I take for work v. personal ones, what is the best way to go about doing it?

Right now Aperture and iPhoto both allow you to have more than one library. I'd assume Photos will as well.

You aren't understanding him correctly. You don't have to enable iCloud photo library on any of your devices if you don't want to. It is a feature available though.
