Well they said the Zune HD is the best PMP touchscreen player and by their definition I would agree.

They don't put the Touch or iPhone in that category because they have more features.

And the Nano doesn't have a Touchscreen.

So what's left? Sony, maybe Samsung and whoever else may have a touchscreen mp3 player without too many other features to put it in the microcomputer category.

Basically Gizmodo declared the Zune HD the winner of its own category.

I want to see it in 6 months

The screen looks nice, and overall, for it's job, it looks perfect. I am happy that some form of competition is out there for the iPod touch. I wish they would have came out with this first before the iPod touch. That would have been huge.

Not only isn't the upper left button a volume rocker, but it's recessed to the point of being a nuisance. Changing the volume on the device's overly complicated. It should have been a rocker, plain and simple.

Seriously?

Aside from Apps on the iPod side and a few extra pieces of hardware on the Zune side, the iPod touch and the Zune HD are essentially the exact same device. And it couldn't be any more obvious that Microsoft released the Zune HD as a direct competitor to the touch.

Different categories... Hah...

And the browser...don't forget the browser!

Oh god...I just got iTunes downloaded and ready. It's HORRRIBLE compared to the Zune software. I'm going to cry. :(

For starters there's no watch folder, so dups get in there and wreak havoc. It does look like an excel spreadsheet. And worst of all, it uses artists, not album artists to manage...and there's no way to change it! So I have 3x the amount of artists now...grrr.

You can use the Zune as a portable HD playback device. You take it with you, load up the media, and go home and watch your pirated Showtime and HBO shows in actual HD off of your Zune.

Plop it into that dock (extra money- darn) and it's part of your entertainment system. I'd rather do that than hook up my laptop to my TV! I'd leave that dock in an inconspicuous corner.

That may not appeal to you, but Apple's products don't do that.

At least in HD, they don't. ;)

secondly, does the Zune HD ' lag ' like other previous models of the zune when a lot of songs and media were being used? because i have heard of this, that the more the zune had stored, the more it ' lagged ' and was slow.
thanks

The lag was the hard drive spinning up on older models. I haven't seen lag on my friend's 32 Gig model (no hard drive). He's got about 25 Gigs of content on there.

and still, this being an apple site we are all sucked into itunes... how/why would u have 2 devices that require 2 separate libraries to sync... thats one of the strangest things... i really wish apple would remedy this by getting over themselves and allowing itunes to sync other devices and end this stupid war... oh well..

actually...all you need is the program...i downloaded the zune software, and i easily set it up to use my itunes folders to search for media...and it doesn't even make its own copy or anything, simply uses those folders...i haven't bought a whole lot of music from itunes, so it really wasn't an issue for me as far as DRM and protected files, which the zune software doesn't import...still deciding whether or not to get the zune though...lol, just wanted to make sure the switch wasn't hard..

gizmodo seems to think browser is fine.

iPT or iPhone doesn't support flash neither, and sunspider isn't exactly a test suite for mobile browsers, large amount of js functions just doesn't make any use on a mobile browser. e.g., a hovering event.

furthermore, sunspider runs each function 1 million times to measure difference, so that 184356 is merely 0.1s, can you tell?

gizmodo seems to think browser is fine. browser.
They also deleted my comments when I questioned them on it. I've had an iPod touch for less than 30 minutes and it's browser is FAR superior. It's faster and fits txt into the proper columns.

gizmodo is far more apple friendly, almost fanboy-ish than engadget, I dont know what you asked, so Im not gonna comment on that.

about the browser, far superior? I will let you know what I think when I get my order, for now, I can't really comment on that (obviously except pointing out the technical problems associated with ars' test).

U have a 3G touch to compare then? Cool, looking forward to hear ur thoughts.

I still haven't listened to the touch yet. I'm afraid it's going to disappoint. It has big shoes to fill after listening to the new Zune!

no I dont have 3G touch, but I do have palm pre who has mobile safari that performs about the same, and better than 2G iPT. I dont think it would be any different to compare it to the ZUNE HD's browser.

Only thing matters eventually is just speed of page loading and basic functions anyway.

I'll have mine in a few days, and a review up a few days after that. I could care less what other have to say about a new device. Best way to evaluate a new device is to use one I say. I don't trust CNET's Donald Bell or Jasmine France to evaluate MP3 players. They do showdowns between Sonys and Cowons and the Winner is always an iPod. They seem gaga over the Zune HD but Jasmine will always bring up that she's a mac girl and Zunes don't do macs. I also don't trust anyone with a Zune Pass that isn't paying for it. That should be a disclaimer and never is.

Today at the gym, people literally drooled on it.... (all iphone/touch/nano owners) ....
so many "wows" .... people seem to love the 3D space UI.... ;)

Day 2.... and my opinion is still the same. Best PMP on the market today..period!

Windows 7 is working perfectly on bootcamp/parallels.. for zune software.

What else can I ask for.... I am a happy camper... Go ZUNE, GO APPLE... :D

Same thing in school today all my friends wanted to use it but I forgot to charge the battery and it died so Im bringing it back tomorrow.

I would have to see the browser for myself really. SOmetimes those speedtests are not really taking into account actual use. I only care to use about 3 or 4 sites while on the go. I don't care to much for flash and all of that.
