I don know I'll hve to find the article but I am pretty sure it was regarding mixing two different gpu makers. It's similar to what nvidia did with 9400 on desktop pc's it can use "hybrid power" i think they call it with anything above an 8 series. Where you can use the 9400 to boost 2d (how thy helps I have never known) and the other card for 3d. I'll have to find the article. I know it was dealing with nvidia suing intel for the x58 chipset saying they were using sli technology without a license. I thought it was called hydra. Or something similar. Sorry at Disneyland with no computer just a trusty iPhone =)
