The lack of a mute switch is a bummer. I use it a lot to lock the screen orientation.

But I regret getting the WiFi only older Air, so in a bind.
Agreed. I assume you can lock the rotation in software but it's not as neat as with the switch

While 2gb of RAM is tempting and what I was hoping for, the price you pay for that is unfortunate: less battery life. That's big for my commute.

My history with iPads is crappy anyway, so I might as well eat humble pie and wait for the iPhone 6 Plus stock to balance out. I keep my iPhones for a little over 2 years unlike iPads.

For everyone who buys one, enjoy it!
How long is your commute, the battery last 10 hours ! (iPad1 here btw still going strong but will be replaced with an Air2 as soon as they have them in stock)

'What's that on your finger, a paper cut?"

"Nah, I just slid the edge of my iPad over my finger, and got an iPad cut"

********************

I think some of the battery life hit is cause of A8X and the more Ram.

Good to hear about the triple core CPU and 2GB RAM on the iPad Air 2. It's just a pity Apple hadn't put all that new technology into the iPad Mini 3 because I much prefer using the Mini. I just find the iPad Air too big IMO.

2GB of RAM. Let the buying commence, and the subject for whining change...

Oh they've already moved on to the 2014 Mac Mini

I will say I am really excited for this model. The speed boost will be welcome since I'm still on an iPad 2 haha

like the ipad mini 3 this ipad air 2 don't bring a lot of new features

To be fair the iPad for intents and purposes hasn't changed much since iPad 2 design and Retina were added.

Its just faster CPU, thinner, faster CPU, thinner, faster CPU. The End.

Not many people are gonna be paying $400 every year for that.

Phones are necessities and are subsidised, tablets are largely luxuries that aren't.

I agree with most of your comment. I have an iPad 3 and will finally update it with this release. On the other hand I update my phone every year. But a 3 year refresh cycle on the ipad does not seem to bad, just about what I do with my computer.

Although, my sense is that as I use the iPad more these days, the refresh of the computer will grow to 4 or 5 years. And at some point the iPad may be the only "computer" that I need aside fom the phone.

The value proposition for buying these is going to need to evolve: the current situation of having people buy machines with 16GB of storage shouldn't be considered sensible in 2014. People need a better reason to buy a new iPad than just new colour choices and faster internals.

Most auto makers only change colors for 3 years between style changes, and people continue to buy. When you have a near perfect product, there's little that can be done to improve it. And, some people simply don't need more than 16GB of storage, so why not give them the option?

What new features should they have?

Then why not just get an new iPhone 6+?

I wish Apple would favour battery life over thinness.

Imagine if they did this for just one generation. How long would the battery last if they had kept the same ID of iPad Air with all the improvements of the iPad Air 2? Then bother making it thinner next year. Just one generation would make a huge difference.

Yeah the headline actually ticks me off. By reading this headline you'd think every review said battery life sucked. That's not the case. I've skimmed over most of these reviews and some of them contradict each other. Walt Mossberg says he didn't notice the Air 2 being that much faster or lighter than the Air. Other reviews say the complete opposite. The only consistency in these reviews seems to be that Apple isn't doing enough to move iPad forward (especially on the software side). That I would agree with.

Yes... previous talk of split screen functionality would be a step in the right direction.

I think Apple missed out by not mentioning it has double the memory and an extra CPU core. When they unveiled the iPad Air 2 I thought meh, very minor upgrade. But now with these two changes included with the other features (Touch ID, Thinness etc) it's slightly more compelling.

I am pretty tired of apps reloading when I'm trying to copy and paste text or images from one app to another. 2GB of RAM would solve that very annoying and frequent problem that I experience on my iPad Air.

If they acknowledged double the memory, they would also have to acknowledge that didn't increase the memory on the iPhone 6s...

Keep thinning....

No thanks guys,, ill take the sexy in thinness! After a full day your gonna tell me you are no where near a plug? So a 1inch thick tab that lasts a week would be your preferred tab? A weeks battery sounds great but I would take the paper thin tablet to carry around! Apple does sexy well!

I myself love the thin to, my 6 Plus feels a lot smaller then it looks due to being thinner IMO.

I have owned every model iPhone & iPad and I can tell you that it makes a difference being thin IMO.:apple::cool:

I'm happy about 2GB Ram, I don't know how much of a difference that'll make for me, but more memory is always a good thing.

I think some people fail to grasp, that with more Ram and the faster A8X processor, iPad Air 2 has the same battery life as the iPad Air:apple:

I can take or leave the mute switch, the control panel is easy and fast to get to for screen lock or mute.
Muting by holding volume switch is quick as well.:apple::apple::apple:

I can't wait to get my iPad Air 2 (pre ordered, delivers 10/22-10/24) and I'll keep my iPad Air and take to my business.

Looking forward to getting an iPad Air 2 for note taking in lectures at uni next year :D

I'm happy that it is thinner and lighter. I'll be putting a bluetooth keyboard case on it so I want the iPad as light (and as thin) as possible and the battery life should easily be enough for a full day at uni plus some study afterwards.

I'm tempted to buy it now but i don't think i'll use it while i'm on holidays...

In regards to thinness, I think it's time for Apple to redesign how and where the power, volume, and mute buttons work on the iPad. Having them be physical buttons on the side makes sense for something like an iPhone or iPod where you hold it with one hand and easy access with the thumb is preferable, but it's always seemed awkward to me when using an iPad, even the mini, due to its size.

While the device's thickness has steadily decreased, front surface area has remained constant, so perhaps its time to relocate the volume and mute functions to the front bottom section. As for the power switch, there's no reason the Home button couldn't work. We already use it to turn it on; a press-and-hold function could turn it off.

Right now it just seemed half-baked. We're missing the mute button, but still have volume and power buttons. Either be bold and redesign all of them and how they work, or stop making it so thin. Otherwise, it looks like Apple is making sacrifices instead of thinking up something new.

Not lying.

And iPad sales numbers have already been speaking. Slumped is the magic word.
Lying by omission is still lying.

Sales numbers for the iPad Air 2 have not been released. It's possible they will be disappointing. If so, they will speak for themselves. Why do you need to lie by omission?

It's a nice bump, but for anybody that has an iPad Air (or possibly even a 4th gen) it's not really worth the upgrade IMO.

Looking forward to seeing that Safari still reloads tabs and being able to say "I told you so." to everyone who's created a thread whining about devices only having 1GB of RAM :D

Your wish was granted with the iPad 3. It was not thinner than the iPad 2, and it was heavier due to the added battery. But you still complain, so you'll have to forgive us if we don't trust your word now.
