Yes, I’m sure that’s exactly it, Apple put ‘very little effort into the design’ of the iPhone.

Considering, Apple prides themselves in designs for all of their products, I’m sure they put more than just a ‘little bit of effort into the design’ of the iPhone. Just because it doesn’t appeal to you because of a ‘camera bump’, doesn’t mean it’s a problem for everybody else outside this website where some members are overly pedantic on here.
So, how do you explain the clunky black block that is the Apple Watch and its selection of extraordinarily restricted and uninspiring clock faces?

Not with THIS customer. It's a shame that economies of scale determine product development. The mini might not have sold a bajillion units, but the people who like it REALLY like it. I wish that counted for something.
Yeah agreed. I mean, I will never buy a Mini, but I support to the hilt a variety of product sizes, even if some of them aren't making a single cent of profit. Apple has no heart. I tries to pretend it does, but it's a heart of cold, hard, stone.

...and here was me hoping for an iPhone Mini Pro... :-(

Every single person I know with an iPhone Mini absolutely loves it and thinks it's the best phone they've ever had. I understand it hasn't sold the same numbers as the regular iPhone, but it's still sold millions and undoubtedly earned profits for Apple.
Perhaps the form factor might continue as future SE models?

I really don't understand why phone makers don't just increase the thickness of the phones again so that it's one seamless surface... ugh!
Because no one would buy a phone that thick or heavy. Seriously, people think they can just magically make it thicker and add some battery while they are at it. If they did that it would weigh twice as much, and the Pro models are already too heavy. No cares about the stupid camera bump. It affects absolutely nothing, unlike doubling the weight and thickness of the device.

I’m not sure you want that. That’d be ridiculously thick.
Yes, yes it would. Just take a look at it:
It's almost as thick as a MacBook Pro with the lid closed! No one wants to hold that. Nor does anyone want something that weighs at least twice as much. Most of the weight is in the stainless steel and the battery, and these crazy suggestions just advocated add much more of both.

Don’t worry mini fan (me included). The mini will reappear as iPhone SE 4th gen and 5th gen just like the fact that iPhone SE 2 & 3 are keeping iPhone 8 alive.

the fact that iPhone SE 2 & 3 are keeping iPhone 8 alive.
The iPhone 8 would naturally still be part of Apples line up for iOS updates, but it’s not being sold/available on their site. The point is, it’s not actively being promoted in any shape or form, it’s basically a 4 year old phone that isn’t relevant anymore. I also expect 2023 to be the very last year for iOS updates for the iPhone 8 in the 5-year cycle.

Well, I hope these are wrong or incomplete - I would like to see a iPhone mini pro in there.
Pro and non pro should be available in all sizes - choice!

That iPhone 14 Max is actually a reincarnated iPhone 13 Mini by simply blowing it up to fit inside a Pro Max mold.

All of the bigger components would have to be shoved towards the top of the phone, several things that are currently at the bottom would have to be moved to the top, it would be an absolute disaster.
Where did I say it would taper down to a point at the bottom? All the components that currently fit at the bottom would still be at the bottom. The cameras would be at the top. The top would be just thick enough to encase the cameras. Backfill the additional space with battery. Plenty of people have suggested making the entire phone as thick as the camera bulge and filling the resulting space with batteries. That would be heavier, and something approaching half an inch thick, from end to end. I'm proposing shaving some of that extra thickness off, with a phone that would be lighter than a full block, yet have a flat back that would sit flat on a table.

I didn't say it was a great idea, I said it was possible. You've made poor assumptions so you can ridicule... your assumptions.

There's more to it than just charging your phone. It would have faster transfer speeds for those that record a lot of video. (The new ProRes video is great, but is painfully slow to transfer.) Also, finally using a standard cable/plug that nearly every every electronic device uses these days. The iPhone is the oddball out. Everything I have uses USB-C (Nintendo Switch, MacBook, iPad, GoPro, drone, battery bank, active stylus pen, etc).
I really think apple will try to skin the usb c with the iphone and fry and sell us some wireless only garbage

Honestly, I think the real one looks more ridiculous than the "fat" one below. On first glance I did not even notice that the lower was thicker. I doubt the dimensions would be an issue in practice, but indeed, the weight might.

Given that cases can smooth out bumps and case usage is pretty much the default nowadays, I have not been too bothered by the bumps so far. I view phones a bit like early cars a century ago, when the automaker sold you a chassis and then you had to find a coachbuilder to make a body for it to be a complete car - i.e. the iPhone itself is just a phone chassis, not a complete phone, you have to finish it yourself with a suitable case. That being said, bumps are becoming so large that cases have a hard time protecting them without additional bumps or ridges on the case, and to me that crosses a line.

I would definitely prefer a thicker iPhone with a flush camera module integration/design. The so-called bump almost reaches to the center of the phone which, with the camera module currently used in the 13s, is detrimental for day to day usage considering large hands imo.

Would look a lot better with the cameras flush. These bumps are really naff and make it look like very little effort has went into the design. I am sure no one would complain about a slightly thicker phone that has more battery life or better cooling.
I would complain because it would be “slightly thicker” but a lot thicker plus heavier and I want a slim and light phone with great cameras. I don’t care about the bumps at all.

Wow. It’s not a good look, but even if a case can mitigate the appearance, I wonder how well balanced it’s going to feel holding it. I felt the 12 Pro I had was actually more of a strain to hold than the 12 Pro Max because something about the weight distribution felt off to me on the smaller vs the larger iPhone. It’s all moot to me since pwm forces me to stick with the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE. But I still like to see the new iPhones and I thought the Prosser versions looked enviable and hoped he got it right on that call. These, not so much.

I've reached full "Meh" with the iPhone design. Every year its just a larger camera now. Its fine, but there is zero exciting about it anymore.
Totally hear you. I MISS that excitement, always looked forward to the keynotes. And nothing will ever beat my "WHOA" reaction when I watched in Jan. 2007 - the very first iPhone. Many were mind blown.

6 Plus, I was pretty darn excited bout that release. iPhone X....yeah a cool dramatic change (I did wait for the larger XS Max though). I have upgraded since to 12 PM, then again to 13 PM...only because my 12PM was a lemon, battery was a pile of junk. Until there is some crazy radical insane change - that "One more thing..." (like the first look of Apple Watch...which impressed me
)
- my feelings with the new phones are 'eh' each year.

That's what I think. Plus the fact that the 13 mini will be sold for 2 or even more years directly from Apple. Perhaps they will drop a new color, too.
