What on earth are you on about?
I love my 12 Mini, and in an ideal world Apple wouldn’t discontinue it.
But their numbers don’t lie, and The amount of people who want a bigger non-pro iPhone are much higher then the amount of people who want to pay $700 for a mini iPhone.
That’s what people want. They want a ginormous phone, without all of the pro features for a lower price.
It’s the same reason that Apple is rumored to be developing a 15 inch MacBook Air, while The 11 inch MacBook Air and the 12 inch MacBook have disappeared.
As for profit margins, the people who have purchased a Pro Max in the past several years because they wanted the biggest screen most likely won’t be upgrading this year anyway.
That small group of people who bought the 12 promax and the 13 promax because they wanted a ginormous screen and nothing else most certainly will be sticking with those phones for several years to come, so Apple already wasn’t going to make money this year off of those people.
However there are plenty of people who want a huge screen but refused to pay $1100 plus for it. That is where this new phone comes in.
My prediction is that it’s going to be a huge seller.
And as for the money Apple lost for not selling the pro version, they’re just going to try to get the customers who purchased the 14 max over the 14 pro max to invest in their services, so either way they’re not losing money.
As for the Mini, i’m sure the 13 Mini won’t be going anywhere anytime soon, and people who really want a mini phone will be perfectly happy with it.
Plus there’s Already a rumored 2023 iPhone SE that’ll have a 5.7 inch LCD in the body of the current SE with a touch ID power button, that should satisfy most people who want a smaller phone when it’s released.
Honestly I think this move is just as much of a gamble as the mini. Apple did a good job of ignoring the noise and keeping a steady product line based on what the actual market said it wanted, and once that matured significantly they decided it was worth the risk to see if these loud internet echo chambers had anything going for them. They did it, and found that it failed to materialize into anything even resembling a market.

This next push for "larger screen without the same performance/price accompaniment" is the same kind of gamble, that I think will ultimately fail too. Loud internet whiners are not a market. Apple has done just fine keeping larger associated with more performance and more money in all their product lines, and I firmly believe this will end up being another dud. 15" MacBook Air is dubious at best, and I'm not convinced we'll ever see it.

Would look a lot better with the cameras flush. These bumps are really naff and make it look like very little effort has went into the design. I am sure no one would complain about a slightly thicker phone that has more battery life or better cooling.
I’m beginning to think they should make a wedge shaped iPhone, like they did with… some MacBook Airs, I think? Cameras flush at the thick end without making the whole phone that thick.

If I have to guess I think the 14 Max will do quite well. It's already evident that even basic users appreciate large displays and longer battery life. They also generally don't care to pay up for the extra pro exclusive features. Although for those that do, the only "issue" I can see with a 14 Max is taking away sales from the Pro Max.

That would certainly produce a phone that no one else is doing. Or they could put the camera top middle and have the phone taper on both sides. Though really it seems like Apple are pushing their luck as much as they can to see what compromise users will accept and sadly because some people need an iPhone and their is no alternative other than a older model they can continue to put out some undesirable designs and still sell them in the millions.

I really don't understand the bumps - they could easily just make the iPhone case thicker overall. Then the phone would lie flat and have room inside for a larger battery.
One reason they don’t do that is that it would be more expensive to manufacture (larger battery, casing, …).

The bump is almost as thick as the phone now. People say “just make the phone thicker”… so like… double the thickness? Ok not double but probably at least 65% thicker.

Whelp, the one group of people who loudly exclaimed they still wanted a small iPhone didn't show up to buy them once Apple finally gave in. Apple uncharacteristically gave in to loud blog voices that in no way represent the real world, and they lost as a result.

Next, they pivot to the next loud group: "I want big without paying for performance too."

We'll see how that works. My guess is the 6.7" non-Pro will flounder like the mini.

I bought one, what the **** else was I supposed to do, go out and buy a thousand of them to try to make a difference?

Well, the efficiency of the A-Series processors actually create more longevity v.s. the mentality of ‘We need to ‘Manufacture a bigger battery’. A bigger battery isn’t the answer, what we need (Which isn’t even close to being ready) is more advanced battery technology.

iPhone 12/13 Pro design is GOATed, square design is where it is at but wow is this ever dissapointing in terms of evolution.

Also, lol @ that fool Jon Prosser.

I know absolutely nothing about design and I can already tell you that would be horrendous, awkward, and completely inefficient both in terms of production and use of space.
All of the bigger components would have to be shoved towards the top of the phone, several things that are currently at the bottom would have to be moved to the top, it would be an absolute disaster.
Also, just for a second imagine trying to use it.
Holding it by the thin bottom, then using your other hand to poke something near the top of the screen would tilt the whole thing because of how imbalanced it would be.
And don’t even get me started, if you think the iPhone is wobbly now on the table, if they made the top thicker than the bottom it would be like using those old diving board trackpads if you set it down.
Absolutely ridiculous idea. The camera bump is fine. Sure it’s ugly but honestly, who spends that much time looking at the back of their phone?
