Well, the build didn’t look like the quality was great. But the biggest thing they should’ve done is put the A7 in it.

The 5c was supposed to be a iPhone 5 that was cheaper and easier to manufacture for Apple. Not sure why you think it deserved the A7 then.

Though Apple clearly learnt an important lesson from the 5c fiasco - which was that Apple customers want the latest and greatest (or at least, what was once the latest and greatest), and don’t mind paying for them. That’s why the 5c failed, because users didn’t want to be seen with what was clearly the inferior budget option.

Hence the Xr getting the latest processor and being given equal billing and marketing.

Seriously, we need the XR mini next year. Many people out there don't want to carry a flat-screen television in a front pocket.

I think one of the problem with Mini is that the Notch will be just smaller than the width of the Mini Screen. I think Apple needs 2nd Generation Face ID to make it works. Hopefully those will be ready next year. ( And a reason why they didn't call this year Face ID next gen )

Yeah, it is. Out of the 10 or so XS Max;'s I've seen in person, maybe one of them met my expectations for color uniformity and temperature. Looks way worse than my iPhone 8+. Sorry, I just dont buy the hype when it comes to OLED. Its trash.

But enjoy paying more for junk.

To each their own, but OLED is generally better to most people. And if it is “trash” or “junk” to you, enjoy LED... for now, as I’d imagine all iPhones going OLED eventually.

Judging by the size of the eye strain thread on here, if Apple went full OLED with the current PWM implementation they would be cutting out a good chunk of their customer base. I had a Samsung OLED TV with PWM and it made me feel physically sick watching it.

Nope. OLED is bridge tech between lcd and micro LED. Apple never wanted to use OLED and has publicly stated its inferior for phone screens. They were forced to use it because MLED isn’t yet available, and people who don’t know any better are whining for OLED cause Samsung did it. Apple was in a tough spot so they caved in but that doesn’t mean the original concerns went away.

That being said some competitors phones do have nice looking OLED screens. Apple just doesn’t seem to be pulling it off, and may be getting b grade panels from Samsung or something. Idk what it is, but Apple OLED has been a big disappointment to me.

I just ordered another 7+ 128gb instead and giving my old 7+ to my mother. I'd rather stab myself in the eyeballs than pay apple for a phone with an annoying notch, lower pixel density and no home button. No idea wtf i'm going to do in 2 years when i need to buy a new phone, i think i'll move to Android. The new iphones are absolute garbage.

I've just upgraded my 6S to the XS, it's absolutely brilliant. Far better than I expected. The lack of home button is a none issue, as is the notch. Enjoy the android I guess (they also have notches?)

I'd love to see an actual quote where Apple "publicly stated it's inferior for phone screens". And remember, this is all subjective, I think OLED looks better. You think LCD looks better. It isn't a black and white issue. I looked at the XS Max this past weekend in my local Apple Stored, and was VERY impressed with the screens.

Okay, 5 years ago, which is a lifetime ago in the tech world. Let's be honest, if Apple though OLED, today, was worse than LED, why would they use in their high end model phones?

Because, like I said, Micro LED is not yet available.

Apple wanted to do this design, and the only way to pull it off last year was to go OLED, which they have spoken out against many times (not just that one article).

Now they have a way to do something similar with an LCD, but the real goal is to get to Micro LED for all displays.

Heres my ranking:

Micro LED > LCD > OLED

Came to this thread to see if others were thinking of things I hadn't thought of in the pros/cons category with the Xr and what I got was a flame war between Xs owners (or prospective owners from the sounds it) calling prospective Xr purchasers poor, and Xr prospective buyers calling OLED trash.

So much for rationale debate, long live polarization!

Just ordered the XR. One might say the XR is a sight for XS Max sore eyes.

For some of us, it's pretty easy to tell the difference between a 401 ppi iPhone and a 326 ppi iPhone. That's why I'm keeping my 7 Plus for now.

For others, they have a hard time telling the difference, or else just don't know any better. That's why I'm upgrading my wife's 6s to an XR.

I use my iPhone 6+ as my primary reading device for books in addition to normal web surfing. Text quality is extremely important to me. I've seen videos on YouTube comparing the text quality between the Xr and 8+. It was very obvious to me that the text quality was lower on the Xr. I was really hoping to upgrade to the Xr but now I'm going to go with an 8+ or 7+.

This is a brilliant video and clearly demonstrates the inferiority of the XR screen vs. the 8+ screen. The creator of this video proposed two alternates to the way the XR was marketed by Apple. Powering each with an A11 chip, in one case using an OLED screen and in the other case retaining the the LCD and increasing the resolution to 1080p and a corresponding increased PPI. I would definitely opt for the latter and a substantial group of users cannot tolerate the OLED screens due to PWM or other factors, including myself. I returned both the XS Max and the XR. I would have also made the XR wider.
