Yes, it makes a pretty big difference in small text readability.

The problem is once you see it, you can never unsee it.
But can you still read the text? If so, no actual impact on your day to day.

It does, phones don't get less or more sharp after 2 weeks. I always hated the resolution of my old iPhones and since the iPhone X and XS that has finally been fixed. Who are to say that I'm overestimating the impact. You can also watch movies in 360p, as long as you can see what's going on right. How about you stop attacking people for things they consider important. Saying that PPI isn't that meaningful is just your opinion and not a fact.

If you base your day to day happiness on text sharpness of your smartphone then you need to get a life

I think you're the one who needs a life.

If you check out Sam Sheffers preview he talks about the plusses and minuses. He referred to the screen as laser sharp. So stop worrying about blurry text.

I'll stick with OLED!! That notch will stand out against black on an LCD!

I heard the notch will stand out against any other colour on OLED screens as well. :p

PPI is indeed the same for the Xr and 8. However, the 7+ and 8+ have 401 ppi while the Xr has 326 ppi. Higher ppi is more important for a large screen than for a small one. The 7+ 8+ are the more apples to apples comparison and the Xr falls short in my book.
The importance of pixel density doesn’t depend on the size of the screen but the distance you are usually viewing it from. You don't hold a phone closer to your eyes when it’s screen is bigger, it is more likely the opposite.

Is there any reason Apple is against having stereo front facing speakers vice one firing from the bottom of the iPhone.

This lack of symmetry bothers me since the iPhone received stereo sound.

It’s not impossible to get done, maybe move the Taptic Engine to the centre of the device for even balance/weight distribution. Would also help if the physical buttons were lowered on the device, last I checked this positioning worked on the SE and prior 4” screen phones. Does Apple believe their are in the palm reflexology business.

Fix this already, some attention to details, what we get is a pill shaped camera housing from horizontal to vertical positions. Center this too so the phone is balanced when flat on a table.

I would be all over this phone had it been 5-5.5”. But at this size we would rather buy a X/XS (if the budget is there) or maybe even iPhone 8. 6.1” is out of the question. Period.

Presumably, this will have the same connectivity issues as the XS and Max due to the Intel chips, no?

No, problem with XS and XS Max is more likely caused by the new antenna design. XR has the old antenna design and FCC test showed it has better antenna gain than XS an XS Max (Max is the worse btw...).

I don’t think the antenna plays as big a role in the current connectivity problems as some think, otherwise the problem wouldn’t be fixed by swapping out the device, as users have reported.

This screen size is great. It may replace the 5.8" as the smallest iPhone sized device in a few years, depending on sales.

I love the 5.8" though & despite my initial thoughts of the 6.5" Max being a possibility, I think the 6.1" is the largest I could go.

Hope they keep all three for the short term at least...& possibly have identical tech specs for all three (though I doubt it)?

I also really like the rougher bezel on these...i'd like the whole phone to be coated with the fine 'sandstone'-like surface as it'll prevent ugly smears/fingerprints & make it stand out from a myriad of gloss...

Maybe, maybe not.

But the FCC test is a fact: XR has better antenna gain than XS.

Hardly. A $750 iPhone is a poor man’s XS? It shares almost a lot of the same features as the iPhone XS with a similar form factor, Face ID, A12 processor, wireless charging, etc. I don’t think your statement classifies as anything as ‘Poor’.
LCD in 2018? Large bezels in 2018? No thanks.

Looks like a really good phone and I may be tempted if Apple don't sort out the LTE problem on its more expensive siblings. Don't like that the screen is a slight bit narrower than a plus phone though.

I get that these video reviews are basically advertisements and I reckon Apple all gave them certain things they had to say.

What was up with the dude from Mashable? Perhaps he didn't want to do it.

A few funny things I noticed...

That bloke wearing blue rimmed glasses sporting an Apple tattoo... People just don't have any shame. Although he was out hipstered by the cadre of grown men on skateboards in one of the videos.
According the the Cnet lady the "screeeeeeeeeeeeen" is really good! I think she may have had a few mimosas earlier in the day!

It looks good.
Showing photos off to friends with a black background on LCD... the notch will show against the grey (black) of the LCD. yuck

That CNET "review" felt more like a marketing video. As someone interested in this phone, I was excited to see some early reviews, but that's not what these are unfortunately.
So true. These journalists are puppies to Apple. They want a trip to New York next time.

Nice ads but nobody mentioned the important stuff like if it fixes the issues that are plaguing the iPhone Xs and Xs Max like reception.

It's not impossible to judge the black level since the bezel right next to the screen is also black.

The XR screen is undoubtedly a step back in pixel density, resolution, viewing angle, and 3D touch compared to the 8+. Apple's own specs confirm it.
Not understanding or caring that specs vs how the device works on whole, mean little to a large segment of phone owners outside of the tiny bubble of forums is amazing in 2018. Spec faux rage goes with Isheep, and other negative comments about owners who don’t care, belong in the trash can these days. If what you say is true, so what? A Chevy isn’t a Veyron, and is cheaper built for different market.

Only a fool would pay $750 for this phone when you can get a significantly better camera and extremely better screen for $250 more from Apple. People should either be buying an inexpensive android phone or going for the best with the iPhone XS or XS max.
Well, I'll be taking advantage of the deal to switch carriers and re-join my family plan. I'll buy an XS for myself, and my mom will only have to fork over $50 for a 128gb XR thanks to the $750 bonus. Coming from her 6 she will be extremely happy and also save a lot of money. She will probably even like the colors, larger size for her 60 year old eyes, and lighter weight more than OLED & stereo camera XS when she just wants to point and shoot anyway.

Doesn't seem foolish to me. A lot of people are going to love this phone, and you can also get a 128 size for a $50 bump, where the XS is a $150 bump going from 64 to 256… $800 (-$750 in my case) vs $1150 is a significant overall cost difference in the end for a lot of people.

Yeah, it is. Out of the 10 or so XS Max;'s I've seen in person, maybe one of them met my expectations for color uniformity and temperature. Looks way worse than my iPhone 8+. Sorry, I just dont buy the hype when it comes to OLED. Its trash.

But enjoy paying more for junk.

It may be junk to you but doesn’t mean it is to everyone else in the world. I love the OLED and I have never had a single complaint about anything you mentioned. If there’s a tiny spec of color change, I really don’t care. It’s a phone. I paid for it because I like it and I’m going to use it.

5c was decent, well made and more importantly felt really good in hand. Not sure why you think it looked like crap?

Well, the build didn’t look like the quality was great. But the biggest thing they should’ve done is put the A7 in it.
