When the iPhone was first released, 3.5" was the perfect size for a phone. However after mobile gaming and browsing really took off, there was definitely a need for a larger screen to appreciate and utilise more content.

Regrettably Apple's defiance and insistence that the one-handed use of a phone is imperative will give the haters quite a lot of ammunition once Apple do release a larger screen with their next phone. Nonetheless they are making the right move and although it's potentially a couple of years too late, they're not yet in a position where it's too little, too late -- as arguably it is with RIM.
To me it's still not too late for RIM. All they need to do is sell a phone that has a slide out keyboard but the rest of it is touch screen (with an option to use a touch screen keyboard as well), and drop their own OS and use Android.

If they did this I think they could make a comeback. It was only a year or two ago that it was between the iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy phones in the smart phone market that no one could break. Now we have valid competition from both HTC, and Sony, both of which I would say offer better phones than the latest Galaxy is.

And I always thought that 3.5" was the perfect size for a phone... At least that's what EVERYBODY here has been saying for years. And then came the 4" iPhone. And now that Apple has finally decided to follow the competition, 5.5" is no longer "way too big"...

All that being said, Apple should cater to the wishes of folks like myself and release an iPad Mini that can make phone calls. I don't make many phone calls, but I use the mobile Internet very often, and I certainly don't want to carry two mobile gadgets with me. The iPad Mini has a wonderful form factor, I like that hardware very much. But it doesn't make much sense to buy such a device when you already own a 5.something" smartphone.

I think Apple were more forced into this move personally. I think it has killed their sales taking this long for such a simple improvement. This is the right move from Apple if they wanna keep up with the competition.

I moved to Android (Samsung Galaxy Note II) simply cause I needed a larger screen for work. I would return to Apple within a heartbeat as soon as this rumored 5.5 inch iPhone is released.

I certainly admire your faith and sincerely wish I could agree. I personally feel that RIM's demise has put a huge dent in its brand, meaning people will think twice about buying their products. Using Android would be a bad move as it would negate everything businesses liked about RIM's OS, with its security and such. Also another Android product in a sea of other ones won't be enough to immediately differentiate their brand.

Both HTC and Sony have made some excellent Android phones. Although I find that due to marketing, 'Samsung' is almost synonymous with 'Android', other manufacturers can still make an impact. In that sense there may be hope for RIM but they'd need something insanely better than anything anybody can do. And I don't think they have the vision, discipline, or even time to pull something like that off.

I'd be willing to bet that within 5 years, their hardware division will be liquidated and they'll concentrate on using their excellent software patents and innovations in tandem with an existing company.

The Note 3 is actually a decent size. The iPhone 5.5 won't be as wide as the Note 3 and as has already been mentioned it will also be thinner. I would go as far as saying that the iPhone 5.5 would be easier to handle than the Note 3.

Lg G3 has decent size for 5.5" so keep dreaming..we all want a 5.5" in that dimensions but not a chance and for me, a phone more than 150mm tall doesn't fit in my pocket entirely

It may not fit in your pocket but it may fit in other people's pockets.

People on here focus too much on what they want and fail to acknowledge what others want.

The iPhone 6 5.5 would only be marginally bigger than the Note 3, in recent years there has been phones bigger than it that have fit into people's pockets.

If the 5.5 is not for you then simply don't get it.

'Samsung' is almost synonymous with 'Android'

Samsung sells a lot of phones... no doubt. And they have marketing that seems to be everywhere.

But there were 237 million Android phones sold last quarter... and Samsung only sold 85 million smartphones.

Samsung is the largest Android manufacturer... and the largest smartphone manufacturer in general.

But I think we give them too much credit.

it's just the back of the backlight, nothing to do with the antenna.

but the red (4.7") one does look the same. from http://www.nowhereelse.fr/iphone-6-panneau-retroeclairage-97936/

Hi arn!

From an Apple enthusiast to an Apple enthusiast: Do you think that central black square, just where the Apple logo fits in the back of the phone, would mean an iluminated Apple logo at the back of the phone? And maybe with a notification related function... Dreaming is free :D

1) I miss the screen size of my iPhone4, I'm hoping that there will be a 4" screen size iPhone6 as well because I'd really like to cast my vote towards the current screen, otherwise like the 5S I had no choice in buying a 3.5 5S phone :(

2) if you own an iPad mini with cellular you CAN make calls using a VoIP service like hangouts, freedompop, magicjack, etc... On the iPad they would default to speakerphone but you can always use the headphones or a Bluetooth adapter. I've seen many people go that route.

Can someone tape it on their face to show the size?

People like you are exactly what puts me off about this site. Typical Apple fans who expect everything to be beyond prefect, even a simple illustration who an perhaps ordinary guy made just to show how a display size would look in a hand. But no, it was a shocking image for a lots of drama members around here!!

Drop it already and get a life if you don't have one.

And suddenly, one hand use became useless, as Apple fans around the world supported Apple's decision to sell a bigger iPhone than ever.

1 hand use would still be important and available for theses who like it. 4.7" model.
People want choices, Apple is giving some.

The problem is that Apple is currently the only manufacture to make high quality, small smartphones. If you want a 3.5'' smartphone, good luck, you have to buy a 2+ year old phone that within a year or two will no longer support modern software. Pretty soon finding even a 4'' phone will be impossible, so for those of us who prefer smaller phones, too bad!

Literally the only Android (or iOS) phone I could find released in the last 18 months with a screen size smaller than 4'' was the Samsung Galaxy Young ( http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_young_s6310-5280.php ). I could not find even a single phone released within the past 12 months smaller at or smaller than 3.5''.

Of course Apple may also provide 3 phone sizes in the next revision, and the 4'' may just not get any press because part leaks are indistinguishable from iPhone 5S.

Yes. I do agree entirely. I think pockets have got bigger in recent years to take the larger phones. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note II (which is no small phone! haha) and all but one pair of my jeans pockets are more than big enough. That one pair is a tight squeeze but still fits never the less. Pockets are much bigger these days. Can't wait for the 5.5 iPhone!

Just because the 4" may or may not be discontinued it doesn't mean people should hate on it. I don't see similar negative remarks about the 4.7" version. Ironicaly if any version is to replace the 4" then it will be the 4.7", the 5.5" is after a different market.

I have argued repeatedly that a 5+ inch phone would be too big and Apple wouldn't do it. But I'm fascinated to see how Apple addresses the size problem in a human way.

I'm starting to come around to the idea that this will be a fantastic option for consumers because Apple will bring enough innovation to the table to make this work.

Screen looks a great size. esp the 5.5"

Just please "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD" Apple.

Don't ruin it with a "MASSIVE" Bezel around it.

Please Please Please.

The very latest Android large screen phones, esp from LG have much much nicer bezels.
If you need to keep the home button at the bottom, then ok, we'll accept that bezel at the bottom, but don't then go and put an equally MASSIVE one at the top for no reason.

Please show us you have more imagination that to just stretch the current design bigger

Sorry guys, show me the logic board or the antennas, and I'll tell you what you're watching isn't a Phablet, it's just an bigger iPod Touch aimed at gamers sharing cpu and screen resolution with the 4.7" only iPhone 6 but no phone capabilities.

It will be interesting to see how well they have created their announcements to explain how, unlike last time when 4" was the perfect size, now larger is a perfect size also.

Apple spend ages going over and over their speeches esp the video's crafted to perfection and every single word has been well thought out.

They can always get out of it, by putting the blame? onto customers, and saying:

"Customers talked to us, and of course, we listen, saying how much they would enjoy a larger mobile experience. We have taken everything that made the iPhone great, and enhanced it to give an even more amazing look and feel to those who were after, not just more of the same, but a whole fresh viewpoint on an already amazing product"

:)

I really don' t get the dummies made for the iphone 6 5.5 inch.
I get the 4.7 inch dummies, there was a schematics leak from foxconn for the 4.7 model.
But there have been no leaks for the 5.5 model.
Just a weird case leak and a leak on a japanese website, but that was for a 5.7 model.
The 5.5 dummies are 81mm wide while the leaked schematic for the 5.7 inch is 77mm wide.
It makes no sense at all.
My guess:
I think it will be 4 mm less wide(at least) and 77 mm wide and 154mm tall. And look more like this. Apple will never release a model like the dummies posted.

As we continue to use our iPhones more and more our preferences changes over time, when the first iPhone came out 7 years ago the 3.5" screen was kind of perfect and better than anything else out there. The move to 4" was highly discussed and many were worried about it being too big to diminish its portability, however once released with the retina display and thickness adjustment it was good improvement for watching videos, and the increased battery life obtained too. After iOS 7 was released the navigation experience in Safari became a diminished experience, with all the bars and buttons appearing all the time when doing a simple scroll over the website. The Reader function helps but it is still a small screen for the interface provided. The need for a bigger screen was seeded and made its effect on people who is tired of battling with Safari's user interface in this cramped "display". Now Apple has proven to be effective into providing a good balance between size form and function, but the sacrifices are not clear.
I suspect battery life of the 5.5" will be the same or worst that the 4.7" as they will aim to make it lighter than anything else out there.
What would be the difference in functionality of the 5.5" vs. the 4.7"? With a Delta of 0.7" = ~20mm what extra feature could possibly be added beyond the obvious slightly bigger screen?

4.7 inch is about 18% bigger than the 4 inch version.
What is the added benefit of that?
It will give customers more choice , that' s all.
I think there will even be a 3.8 or 4 inch iphone6 mini around april 2015.
