No thanks. A 2019 LG TV will be obsolete before the end of 2019. LG has demonstrated through their actions that they won’t support their customers once they have your money.

Once my existing LG tv needs to be replaced, I’ll be looking at a Vizio. I’ll never be buying from this brand again.

I don't have an LG, but I'm leery of Vizio after they forced updated all users terms and conditions to agree to the new Oath rules.

Insane how a 2016 wayyyyyy cheaper Vizio tv can use Airplay 2/homekit, and a top of the line LG OLED 2016/17/18 can't because of reasons. LG has horrible post purchase support on their tvs. This is why Apple TV's are still relevant in a market of "smart" TVs. Apple, please come out with a cheaper Apple TV 4k, you can remove the HomeKit/game support. I just want to be able to watch my 4k/HDR library of movies without waiting on another Direct tv now promotion to come around ;)

I can only tell everyone that doesn’t have an OLED to buy one as soon as possible. It’s so much better than LCD that it’s not funny. The 2019s will have some extra stuff but prices for the 2018s right now are a steal.

Now I really doubt LG will bring iTunes to the 8 series but it’s not unusual. Apple has done it. Android OEMs refuse to update 2-3 year old phones. Many TVs that should’ve gotten a Dolby Vision update never did. At least iTunes isn’t an essential feature. If you want it buy an Apple TV 4K.

I think you will be waiting forever. DirecTV lost a bunch of money on that promo. Who could’ve seen that coming? That ATV deal for $105? spread like wildfire. Now I think they just offer sticks.

LG customers who purchased a 2018 LG TV had their new TVs obsoleted within months (or even weeks!) for no reason other than for LG to withhold a feature advantage for future TVs. That’s a d*ck move.

It’s not even personal for me. My LG tv is almost 4 years old and I don’t expect it to be updated but I’ll be in the market for one next year and seeing what LG did to new customers, gives me every reason to switch brands and buy from a company that supports their customers.

I can't imagine ever needing "support" for a TV. Using Apple TV, I don't have any use for the "smart" (i.e. stupid) features in most TVs, and I don't allow my LG TV to connect to the internet. Picture quality is far more important than some notion of future "support" for some possible new features. The LG OLEDs have arguably the best picture out there, so I'll enjoy that picture every night while others might want to settle for lower picture quality with a promise of firmware updates or whatnot.

The problem with homekit is manufacturers aren't getting behind it. There's 10x more devices using z-wave.

As I am typing this on my MacBook, it didn't even autocorrect homekit... it would have on any other Apple product. This is small, but it shows you how not serious they are about home automation.

65-inch :D...

These are getting better

There is a valid reason for everything.... (1. Apple's a closed system (2. Not everyone uses an Apple (biggest driving force) only in the U.S

They are moving to services. We will start to see a shift in focus and the ecosystem open up now. Just watch

Last time I bought a TV was a Samsung flatscreen LCD in 2005 (the floor model from a Circuit City no less, and STILL going strong today). Can't believe how much the costs on these things has dropped. While I would love to buy a new TV, we just don't watch enough of it in our house to justify the spend. The picture quality is pretty amazing though.
I'm in a similar situation. I have an old, but still functioning 55" TV. While I would like to upgrade, it just doesn't make sense any longer. I will soon be an "empty nester" and my wife and I don't watch much TV together so most of what we watch is streamed to laptops or mobile devices.

I will never buy a Vizio TV because of Vizio's unethical behavior (selling logs of what their customers were watching without the customer's consent) from 2014 until they were caught in 2017. Vizio was fined $2,200,000 by the FTC and settled a class action lawsuit for $17,000,000.

[doublepost=1552740231][/doublepost]"HomeKit support will let users control their television sets using Siri voice commands or the Home app on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Siri will be able to be used to do things like play a specific TV show or movie to be AirPlayed to your smart TV."

Why can't I do this with Siri on my ATV today? I have a HomePod in my living room that I can use for controlling nearly everything in the room except for my Apple TV - this has always seemed like an obvious feature that should have been in HomeKit from day 1 (especially since so many people dislike the symmetrical ATV remote that feels the same in your hand right side up or up side down).

Can't wait for the mid-year update to our Samsung to be able to use Airplay 2 features.
Fingers crossed that it works.

Customer Retention?

Vizios were so cheap because they were selling customer data. So how many customers would justify how little they paid for a Vizio to upgrade, possibly to another brand, get a feature they want? But how many of those customers also have not opted out of the data sharing policy? Vizio may still be receiving a lot of lucrative data from customers of those models. If so, that more than offsets the cost of paying Apple license fees on older sets.

Does LG still have adds in their own UI, I bought 2 LG Tv's years ago in Indonesia, after a firmware update it showed adds of their own gear, not amused.
Oh, absolutely. You’re another weird customer who doesn’t appreciate having advertisements on their multi-thousand dollar TV, I take it? (Added after any chance of returning the TV has long expired, naturally.)

This combined with LG’s horrendous support experience is why I will go out of my way not to purchase from them again.

You think LG doesn’t do exactly the same data collection as Vizio these days?

Yes, Vizio actually got caught doing something shady enough to get them sued in the US (which is pretty hard when it comes to customer data collection and privacy). Based on the 3 or 4 user agreements I had to go out of my way to avoid accepting on my LG TV (by insisting that I did indeed want to keep features that come with data collection disabled), it’s quite safe to say LG feels fully entitled to any after-sales revenue they can manage. (See also above post; LG has no problem adding literal advertisements to their older models after sale, but AirPlay is apparently beyond their capabilities.)

Thanks for replying, much appreciated.
Then I add another question, can you block those adds with pi-hole or any other content blocker, lets say on a nas or a router?

Even with these Apple apps, there’s no chance a Smart TV is getting connected to my home network. I don’t trust any of them and how many of them have ads on the ui now these days? Just give me a dumb TV and an Apple TV and I’m good

Yea, Homekit works 50/50 for me. And barely works on my Phillips hub. I'm surprised how half assed it has become. I was expecting Apple to take it more seriously.

It's very likely that the main menu ads are served from a dedicated server and can be blocked without interfering with other functionality, but I've never spent the time to try. You may have to do some snooping on the traffic coming from the TV to figure out where the ads are being served from. (I should really try something like Pi-hole at this point, since I think I've just about given up on even worrying about services that break when you block their ads.)

The more annoying ones are the popup ads that LG has been displaying on boot for its IPTV channels. These will both be more tricky to track down since each message displays only once (and you don't know precisely when the next one is going to show up), and being text notifications, they're less likely to be coming from a dedicated server as opposed to, say, whatever server the TV pings to check for updates. (This is pure speculation, but I suspect LG coopted an existing notification system to start pushing these ads a couple years ago. It just doesn't seem to be LG's development model to actually bother releasing new functionality in a software update, even to their own benefit.)

Well, at least my 2017 LG is still getting firmware updates and everything works perfectly. So no need to worry about anything here: a 2019 LG will be totally usable and a great TV for years - even if it doesn't get a new WebOS updates.

No reason they can't bring AirPlay etc to 2018 models like Samsung are doing. Not happy.

Exactly this! I bought a 55" LG TV for my lounge late last year, along with a 43" Samsung for my bedroom & Samsung will be offering a firmware update for their 2018 range which is great.

Guess which brand will be getting my money & recommendation when I next need to buy a TV for my home or when family ask me for help choosing?
