Not so sure about the start up chime. I used to like it, but have gotten used to it not making sounds. Since I use my Mac at work and arrive a little late, people always hear when I turned on my Mac.

You can turn it off in System Preferences --> Sound --> Play sound on startup

If I'm remembering correctly, the startup chime will be silenced if you mute your computer before you shut down (as long as Apple carries this capability into BS).

You can turn it off in System Preferences --> Sound --> Play sound on startup

What with the huge amounts of empty space in the menus, looks like a Linux GNOME GUI. There is no reason to call this OS 11, when Jobs jumped from PowerPC to Intel they didn't jump numbers, this is still OS X. OS 9 and OS X those are different. They just want to show off as if its a huge change. Not fan of the white and transparent menus, not in the age where people are looking for dark modes.

Apple 2013: We are going flat
Apple 2020: Messages icon

I used dark mode for 2 years. I finally had to ditch it. It's bad on the eyesight and there are some studies that demonstrate it. The new interface is fine - it's uncluttered. Apple can call it whatever they please. I'm loving the new icons. Too bad it took getting rid of Ive and having MS lead the way with its preview releases of Win 10 - flat icons sucked. What's the point of 64 bit if you're going to make them flat and 2-color? I'm also glad we've gone from funky window frame designs to none. All they did was take up space.

It appears my iMac 2017 i7 seems to be running hotter, usually with nothing loaded 55°-58°c, under load 60° to 68°c
Not Im easily into 70°c under load with Logic.

Some updates to what I wrote previously:

- There is a bit of lag bringing up file save dialogues but it isn't consistent.

- Apple TV: There is an inconsistency in height of the left panel and where it stops below the left-side button widgets between compared to Music. Apple TV's left panel is incorrect. Remember those misplaced buttons in Music in Catalina? I think they were anticipating Big Sur. They look good now.

- There are new sounds for screenshots, file copy, and file move and I find them very pleasant and not so "in your face" as the older classic sounds for these functions.

- I searched to see if anyone found a hack to move widgets to the desktop out of Control Center. Then again, why would we want to? Are we really having this conversation again? Couldn't they design new widgets instead of recycling the god-awful crap from Tiger? Anyone remember Konfabulator when we were widget-crazy until we realized they just sort of got in the way? Apple destroyed Konfabulator which became Yahoo Widgets. Too bad, they were better and more functional than Apple's but the trend died out on both the Mac and in Windows 7 almost as quickly as it began. Apple's dashboard was a screwy idea that just didn't work.

- There doesn't seem to be any functional change in Activity Monitor and certainly not in Disk Utility. Shame - Disk Utility needs an overhaul badly.

**Carbon Copy Cloner already has a beta available. Like every Summer beta cycle, don't expect a new Audio Hijack or Onyx until Fall. The Adobe and MS apps seem to be working ok. I imagine we'll see an app compatibility list soon enough.**

I continue to be impressed with how smooth this runs - sort of like how polished Mojave's beta 1 was. It's about time the Mac got some new file folders. The new drive icons are nice. Why no icon for a connected iPhone? Why you get no love? Sync choices on the iPhone are still ridiculously stupid and wishful thinking. I still put music and files on the iPhone the old-fashioned way - sliding them over in the Music app. I've gotten used to the separation between the two apps. I wanted to throw in that Internet radio choices integrated with Apple Radio are brilliant and seem to be a hidden gem in the Music app. I used to rely on Tunein (Apple has partnered with them) but just search for a station and you'll likely find it - even local radio stations from the States and Europe. The big names like the full BBC lineup are there and even most of my favorite Old Time Radio stations. Apple has done a very nice job with Media in general but I'm sure a lot of you would likely disagree.

Oh...Siri still can't understand a word I'm saying. I don't have that issue in Windows. Other than that, there's no question of downgrading back to Catalina for me as so many went back to Mojave because Catalina was a disaster that still isn't fixed for many users.

I don't see the point of some items in,what looks-like, and resembles, "Control center" on MacOS if thse items are easily accessible by the menu bar anyway, as they always have been. (unless you can now 'hide' these icons, that would make sense)

True, you can't group them and take them off the menu bar yet, but that seems like a reasonable feature request. It would be nice to clear a lot of those off the menu bar to make room for iStats and other 3rd party controls.

Yay!!! This probably mean the new form factor for iMac and Mac Mini will not plug in to the wall! They will probably have USB C for power and a battery.
Battery operated iMac that you either leave plugged in or recharge? Why unplug it? To move it or not see the clutter cord?

Battery operated Mac Mini. That must be connected by cord to a monitor. A monitor that does need a power cord. So there is still computer to monitor cord and one power cord. Oh wait, two power cords until you unplug the Mini. Because you are going to move it AND the monitor?!?!

Methinks not.

Ok - I found a bug in Photos. I can't import from my iPhone. I've tried several times. Weird. I'm curious if this affects anyone else. I'm glad apps like WiFi Photo exist!

Not sure there's much demand for that, LOL. The reviewer was running Big Sur on a notebook. That's why FOR HIM it replaced Energy Saver. Some OS options change depending on what Mac it's running on.

"We don’t waste time thinking, ‘But it should be one [interface!]’ How do you make these [operating systems] merge together?’ What a waste of energy that would be.” --- Phil Schiller 2014

It certainly seems like they've merged the two and are heading to a confluence. Nevermind that I hate this idea.

Phil Schiller 2014 Where? I would like to read/see the context of that quote.

Maybe new monitor will have a battery too, but you could use an old monitor, have one at work and one at home, and use your phone on the subway. And the video cable might be a thing of the past too: Apple has prototyped a wireless connection for its hi-res goggles that presumably would work for retina displays.

Isn’t Dark Mode for use at night, when you don’t want to light up a dark room with a bright white screen? And then You switch back to light mode in the day?

I think that's one way people use it. Others have adopted it for normal, everyday use. I was one of those. I used Dark Reader for that HTML that wasn't rendered as dark by the source such as Youtube and a few others. I also noticed that I was missing a lot of design detail in Dark Mode. A lot of Dark Mode schemes affect picture rendering and detail to deal with the difference in contrast. Anyway, I'm back to normal mode and I just don't see going back. Some of those studies I read noted that we're keyed as human beings to recognize dark text on a light background. The Xerox Alto was the first GUI display in which the entire idea was black text on white paper, although Doug Englebart's NLS system, which used TV cameras pointed at the small displays in the computer room reversed the black and white field to get the same effect back in the late 60s. NASA's MOKR system in Houston did the same thing for many, but not all, of their displays.

That’s seven years apart. Do people not know design is cyclical?

You can't jump forwards and backwards. Times have not changed enough for the style of 3D icons to come back. I wasn't against it, but they decided to abandon it.

When will I be able to buy a 3TB iPhone which has a desktop OS loaded as well, that I can connect to a cable which gives me power and display connection and becomes a Mac Mini type desktop with the pairing of a BT Keyboard and Mouse.

LOL. Like it’s materially different than what came before. You must have *really* hated the transition away from aqua.

This has been out how for around 5 days and already folk have totally condemned it.

I really worry about the future of the species if reactions to things like this is so visceral...

Tell that to women's fashion and hairstyles. Going flat was a mistake. Let Windows 10 follow Mac, not the other way around. I suppose we're following Windows again since depth and color have been coming back in the Windows 10 previews but it was a waste of resources to give us 64bit and then say "no depth for you." Seriously, we're Mac fans - we expect beauty, poetry. We want to be wined and dined. With Big Sur we should be saying, "Mac! There you are! Where have you been all these years?"
