Sounds like Apple will do what it did with the core duo macs. It released systems in new enclosures with chips which were outclassed in every way just a year later. It wont be as bad as it was back then if they don't have some kind of 32/64 bit change in the OS that will limit what OS will this years updated MacBooks can run. The current chips are also very speedy its just not worth the high entrance fee to use them if something much better exists. These sound like really good chips. Can't wait until they are finally in a macbook. Hopefully they won't limit these to only the most expensive top of the line model to squeeze every last penny from their customers.

Sure it can play HEVC10 video without a hitch but then right after implying it can do same with 4K gaming be using Overwatch as a benchmark?!? My GTX1080 and i7 desktop cant even play 4K at highest settings and I have to turn down lots to get decent frame rate on rise of Tombraider for example (still looks amazing). Therefore I doubt some integrated Intel integrated graphics can even compare.

But macs aren't gaming rigs anyways but would be nice to have the 4K support at least.

Ok now those look good!

This is why I really don't understand the rMB update in April. Apart from a Skylake CPU and rose gold, was there anything else added? Performance wasn't really improved that much so why not hold off that update until the Kaby Lake Core M was available for an Autumn launch. The full 4K encode/decode would really help out this little laptop. An April rMBP refresh with Skylake would have allowed a late 16/early 17 Kaby Lake update. Now it looks like being over 18 months between updates...

Of course, there could be a move to the U 15 W chips for the 13" rMBP which could launch this year before the 15" launches early next year.
Well, there were 20% increases in performance. Why wait another 9 months?

The Macbook will use the:

Nvidia have stated their new chips are totally scalable to fit the manufactures needs so maybe Apple will use them? Or AMD will match the performance.
But if you can buy a thin alloy 17" laptop capable of running the latest games at 4K above 60 fps, Apple will need to do something pretty serious to pursuede you to spend double the money for their machines and I mean more then OSX!

With hardware like this there is absolutely no reason to consider Apple, unless you are absolutely "tied" to OS X. Apple`s obsession with being ever thinner has watered down the MacBook Pro to the point that the "Pro" aspect is just a sales & marketing joke...

15" rMBP versus this; Personally I can live with the extra weight, as the positives far outweigh the negatives for this class of machine. I also expect the provider to put their computers first or at very least equal to it`s other lines, not play "second fiddle" to gadgets & toys, and or design everything in some sad attempt to lock it`s customers into an overpriced ecosystem as Apple now does...

Yeah... yesterday's announcement of the NVidia 1060/1070/1080 for laptops was exciting. Some decent mobile graphical horsepower there. I can't wait to see what the OEMs come up with. There are already a dozen companies who announced new laptops with these new NVidia GPUs inside.

I wonder if Apple will be one of them.

That is not a laptop I would buy for myself, but bloody hell what a colossal beast! It shows how the world of computing has moved on significantly whilst Apple has stagnated and become a laughing stock.

Kaby Lake is ready. Polaris is ready. The competition is ready. The customers are beyond ready. The new MacBook Pro is still NOT ready.

Why, Tim?

Technically, the only mobile Kaby Lake CPU's that are shipping are the Core-M & 15w CPU's as used in the MacBook (Core-M), MacBook Air & most other ultrabooks on the market (15w CPU's).

The Kaby Lake CPU's that would typically be used in the MacBook Pro 13" (28w) & MacBook Pro 15" (47w) will not be available until Q1 2017. If Apple release an updated MacBook Pro 13" this year, they could of course downgrade the CPU typically used and opt for KL 15w CPU's, or just use Skylake 28w chips.

Same, equally it would make a hell of a portable Workstation and the price is decent, which makes it a consideration. Certainly not for those "on the go" mind :) Thin & light has it place, equally Apple is just going too far, resulting in too much compromise. The major concern I have with high power silicon in a small chassis is that the heat syncs are equally smaller, resultantly they will lose efficiency that much faster, with the system being forced to throttle due to the extreme thermal envelope, strikes me as all being rather counter productive.

Good example; I looked a HP`s new super thin Spectre out of curiosity, and the one thing I took away was that in multiple stores and locations the air intake vents were already showing signs of dust building up, which does not bode well for the cooling system over time. When you make notebooks thiner you still need to deal with the thermals, only solution in most cases is to increase the velocity of the cooling fans. I may be wrong, however I have read that the 2016 13" will return to a dual fan cooling solution. If so Apple`s not doing this out of boredom.

Apple just produce consumer grade junk these days, albeit wrapped up very nicely. No one I know takes them seriously as provider of high end hardware, laughing stock being a very apt term...

iToy`s are far more profitable, Apple has long abandoned being a provider of serious high tier hardware. Even when Apple get`s round to updating the Mac line up, you will have no idea how long you will need to wait for the next meaningful update. Maybe Apple will choose to dump on you like all the nMP owners, making the big "can't innovate my ass" speech only to dissregard the product for close to a 1000 days, truly pathetic

Apple is only now reacting to the negativity in the community, due the increasing negative tech press & bombing sales. I fully expect the 2016 MBP launch, just to be bunch of old guy`s congratulating themselves on what is basically just another mediocre consumer product. No doubt it will be above the average notebook, equally factoring in the price, the near mandatory in-house upgrades that are purposely designed to scalp the customer, value for money will be severely diminished.

Apple 2016 = tricks & bells, baubles & gadgets, most of all Greed...

To be honest, I think most people will be happy with a simple refresh. I don't mind slimmer notebooks as long as battery life doesn't suffer and the thing doesn't get too hot.

I hope that Apple has reduced the footprint of the MBP models. This could easily be done by shrinking the screen bezel and for the 13" model in particular I'd like to see a higher native screen resolution.

In keeping up with recent Apple trends, I'd also like to see a few colour options available to keep people happy, as that is one of the major things people want. Quite why the colour of a work tool matters so much to some people I can't quite get my head around, but if a lot of people want colour options, Apple should give it.

That`s exactly what Apple is hoping for...

Would you prefer they waited another 8 months for the updated processors?
It's likely that far less than 8 months will pass until the competition will have KL laptops on the market, so I'm not sure why we'd hold Apple to a lower standard. If anything, wasn't Apple celebrated for boldly bringing new tech to market before everyone else?

I can't fault Apple for not releasing a MBP with Kaby Lake if a compatible processor won't be available until early next year. But they can't make the same excuse for Skylake, which has been around for awhile. Apple should be getting these processors before other vendors—now they're doing the opposite. It's one thing for Apple to be at the mercy of Intel's new update cycles; it's another for them to be so far behind them.

Still, I wonder how many people who buy Mac laptops care about the processor as much as we do. Other features that Apple touts as major advances will pull them in.

There's absolutely no reason to wait for KL, Apple should update the MBP with Skylake and one of the latest Geforce 10 series or Radeon RX already.

They should know better that selling notebooks with 2 year-old guts for a premium price doesn't fly.

Apple can only release KL MBP's when Intel releases the suitable Intel KL processors. If the competition has KL laptops on the market sooner, it is because they are not actually competition for the MBP, but for low power machines.
Intel often launches low-power 4.5W Y-series chips and 15W U-series chips first, neither of which are suitable for use in the machine that people are most curious about, the MacBook Pro. According to an old Intel roadmap, Kaby Lake chips appropriate for use in the MacBook Pro, the iMac, and the Mac mini won't launch until the very end of 2016 or the beginning of 2017, meaning any Apple machines released in the fall of 2016 may be limited to Skylake chips.
Many forum members have been pleading for new MBP's - - why wouldn't Apple release the new design with SkyLake in the Fall and then do a spec bump to KabyLake in the Spring? That way, those who absolutely can't wait to replace their MBP can finally purchase one, and those who are able to wait will have the updated processors.

Since the processors are a constraint external to Apple, it is a mug's game to go chasing the latest and greatest, especially since MBP's tend to last 5+ years for many users.
