I hate that the keyboard doesn’t have a play/pause key and volume/brightness controls. These are my most used keys on my Bluetooth keyboard and I really will be missing these.

Brightness is automatic based on your lightening which I think is better than changing it all the time but you can do in the settings

The smart connector is probably the limitation, it has just three wires and therefore can’t support full usb c.

Maybe, but I prefer adjusting it manually. No automatic detection can adjust perfectly to my needs. The biggest issue for me is the lack of volume control keys though.

I am very happy with the magic keyboard and magic trackpad which work flawlessly with the iPad Pro over blootooth. The new magic keyboard case lacks the top row of function keys. I use the play/pause button for videos on youtube for example. Only minus is the long pairing process, if you use the keyboard and trackpad with another computer.

Yeah I agree about volume, wish it had it but I guess Apple just expect you to use the control center or use the iPad itself.

Guess brightness wise have to see how it when it arrives

Well obviously if you do a lot on international travel, like I do, then lugging two devices is a pain, aside from the weight and space of doing so, cables for both, power adapters for both etc, it is a extra pain going through airport security etc. Note, I also carry a USB monitor.

My usage case is pretty simple, at present I am lying in bed (8:00 AM in the UK) and the iPad is perfect, later I will be outside (hopefully) sitting in the sun and again, the iPad is great to able to catch up the news and read a magazine etc. This afternoon I will start some work, Autodesk Inventor, complex spreadsheets linked to our business system, connected to my 34” monitor (and the iPad connected to the Surface via duet). I have a Surface dock, which makes using the Surface easy, I.e I don’t have to disconnect all my cables etc when I need to take it out. I prefer the Surface to a traditional laptop because it can sit on my desk without a keyboard taking up real estate, still see the screen as well as my monitor. If only the surface had the tablet experience of the iPad I would be happy...or vice versa
Seems like you are royally screwed 🤣
Seriously, you have a difficult usecase. i can’t see you ever doing it on an iPad, even though autodesk has introduced some sort of app irc.
for complex spreadsheets and working with a mouse/trackpad makes it almost doable. But almost is often not good enough And your efficiency/effectivity is hampered.

So you are condemned to have two devices ànd travel with two. My advantage is that I can travel with one, most of the time.

I know this isn't going to be a popular post, but c'mon Apple £349 for this. Have Apple lost their minds. I've been an Apple user and fan for many years, but I'm starting to get annoyed with Apple's price gouging and "think we know best" attitude just lately. Adding a keyboard and mouse to the iPad Pro, just proves Microsoft were right all along about the 2 in 1 devices (not necessarily about the OS).

If Apple are going to start charging laptop prices, they need to start offering things like Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for the iPad Pro.

It is very expensive but not like everybody has to buy it. This is for those who want a laptop experience with Trackpad. Certainly not suited for those who like to use it more as a touch tablet than a laptop.

The price is indeed insane considering how little it actually adds when compared to the Smart Keyboard. I suppose a lot of R&D went into the hinge as Apple would proably be able to sell a lot more these if they managed to lower the price by 100$.

Mine will arrive on Monday and I'm eager to test it out. For me the hinge is the most interesting thing about it and not the touchpad, the backlit scissor switch keys. I actually like the keys on the Smart Keyboard. As I mechanical keyboard user I expected to hate them as they feel very membrane/mushy but I didn't mind it much at all and it makes them almost completely silent in use which often is a plus on the iPad as I often find myself using it in bed so when your wife is falling a sleep besides jo a silent keyboard is certainly a plus.

The trackpad doesn't look all that great to be honest. Not being haptic, the size, everything reminds me of lackluster trackpads from Windows notebooks but hopefully Apple is able to do something great even though it doesn't look all that great from the pictures and videos.

The worst part about the Smart Keyboard for me is the tilt. There is only two settings and I would prefer to be able to have the iPad sit even more straight and the Magic Keyboard seems to be able to offer this capability. What I do find with the Smart Keyboard though is that the magnet isn't all that great, often when I use the iPad in various positions the iPad ends up popping of the case. Sadly this new Magic Keyboard doesn't seem to really be changing anything when it comes to this so I'm eager to see if would hold up any better for me in those scenarios.

What's great is that Apple makes it so easy to return the product if you don't like it so I don't really feel that my pre-order comes with any drawbacks. If I like it enough I'll keep it, if not I will be returning it. It's as simple as that.

It feels like an unfinished product. I bet in a year or so Apple will come out it an improved version with a bigger opening angle. Just 100$ more.
I was really excited for the keyboard but after seeing these videos I am not sure if I will keep or return it. I’ll get mine next week and we’ll see then.

Just a thought that I had. I think it looks more like a shrunken down or portable iMac more than it looks like a MacBook. That’s just my observation.

IM sure this has been answered but just in
What “minimal” case did the first guy have, where it went up and encased the Pencil? If anyone knows, please let me know. I like how it looks!View attachment 907103View attachment 907104View attachment 907105View attachment 907106

I’m sure this has been answered but just in case it hasn’t. Thats a switcheasy case. Works “ok”. I have one. Two slight issues on my gen 2 version, the magnets need to be slightly better and the angled area where the Pencil attaches makes reaching the volume buttons annoying. I’m looking forward to testing it with The Magic Keyboard when it arrives.

The truth is, if the trip is short, I end up just taking the ipad and focus on consumption. If I take the Surface, I always take the iPad; there can never be no work withot play. My spreadsheets dont function on the Ipad as there are macros and scripts and it relies on multiple spreadsheets open simultaneously, plus links to word and presentation files are broken [don't dynamically update].

Yes I cannot see a time when the iPad will be able to do what I want to do or the Surface. It is only my opinion, but it seems Apple is stuck between a rock and a hard place, i.e. making MacOS touch friendly is next to impossible and making IOS a fully featured OS is pretty much the same.

Ordered one and arrives in a week or so. Based on these video reviews, I think Apple tried to make a keyboard that appealed to users on-the-go and users at home/office. The end result appears to be a lack of focus. Given that the Smart Keyboard folio is great for on-the-go, Apple should've doubled down on the home/office use case and:

Added a bit more weight to support more viewing angles
Added a bit more thickness to support Force Touch trackpad
Supported USB accessories in addition to charging
Used lightweight aluminum/mixed materials instead of folio materials
Allowed for the Apple Pencil to be inserted into the cylindrical hinge for storage and charging

I may even argue that extending the upper lip so that a low-res camera could be embedded that worked in landscape mode while docked would've been useful as well (camera on the side still doesn't make sense given that most folks use their iPad in landscape mode).

I'll give it a try and maybe the appeal will grow once I've used it for a bit (like many Apple products).

I get that Apple was aiming for a somewhat stationary dock that allows for the iPad to easily attach and detach. But if you're going to add that much weight and the inability to fold back on itself while still claiming portability, that would appear to be an unclear value proposition. And the price point doesn't help.

Apple never gives us everything in gen 1. If they did we wouldnt buy gen 2.

Wow, it looks super sturdy. Loos great. Only one problem. I don't need this. (To be precise, I don't see any value in this.)

If I wanted this setup I would just use my MacBook Pro.
If I didn't have my MacBook Pro, I would just purchase MacBook Air for the same money.
But then, as others in this thread have stated, you wouldnt have iOS app. A “few“ of us much prefer iOS apps and workflows. I tried to go back to my 2015 MBP out of shelter in place boredom and it drove me crazy... Even Facebook is more awful on the Mac. Thats why Apple came out with project catalyst, the Mac needs better Apps. Very few the other direction.. and I think it‘s safe to assume those are coming sooner rather than later.

100% agree but no one will want to give any praise to Microsoft here. Look how much hate the Surface has had over the years - and this is where we end up with the ipad.

I am extremely close to switching over to the Surface Pro. I have been waffling back and forth since the 2018 iPad Pro was released. The latest laughable “upgrade” combined with what I’m seeing with this new keyboard (it doesn’t fold back? WTF?) and the stale OS has me thinking my Gen 2 iPad Pro may be my last.

Unfortunate...

Maybe I can help. I cancelled my preorder because
a. Stock was limited (shipping is now 3-4 weeks in the UK) so I jumped as soon as it was available
b. I thought I wanted one, because I do a lot of typing, and I was in the mood to treat myself
c. On reflection, I realised I don’t, at least not without seeing one in the flesh, for a number of reasons
People purchase on impulse; and people change their minds; not least when they see £350 leave their bank accounts at a time when everything is very uncertain, and I’m not going to be taking my iPad out of the house for at least three more weeks - a house where I have a MBP16 attached to a 27in screen.

For me, the two dealbreaker issues are:
it doesn’t fold all the way back, which is how I use my iPad 50% of the time
The outer is made of the same very un-Apple low-grade material that my smart keyboard is; which has not aged at all well in the last 18 months.

Hope that helps. I doubt other people are making it up - and I don’t hate Apple, quite the opposite. I just don’t think this product is likely to be worth the very high price for me.

I’m keeping my order just because I can return it if I don’t like it. However, I have the same concerns as you. I fold back my ASK most of the time and I’m shocked Apple keeps using the same awful material. As the owner of 3 ASK’s I can tell you the material looks awful with daily use. I must really love Apple since I dropped over $380 (with tax) while knowing the material will not hold up...

Am I only one that likes the cases material XD doesn’t bother me if it has minor scratches - it’s protecting my iPad lol and I prefer the keyboard on the old folio with the fabric XD spill proof lol

In that case you have about 3-5years to waffle, as your iPad Pro will last that long without a doubt 🤣

I liked the idea of a spill proof keyboard a lot as well. With kids around... hell, I can even be a bit eeehm disastrous. Hahaha.
but the idea of better typing and a trackpad of macbook quality combined with what looks like a very sturdy stand/dock is too tempting.

Can’t wait on my delivery in a week. The boredom of shelter-in-place elevates this shipment to a a different level than it normally would be. The firmness/tightness of the hinge point is a relief to see in action, as is the balance of iPad and keyboard on the lap. But my fav is the backlit keyboard, the game changer IMO. Yes, Logitech and others have had the backlight, but it has required keeping the keyboard charged - one more cable to travel with. The cantilever/hinge design of this helps minimize the front to back depth when opened nicely also, a real important factor on an airplane tray table .

It’s all about options though. Some people don’t want their iPad to become/replace a laptop so they can just carry on as normal. for those who want something ultraportable with a keyboard there’s the smart folio. If you’re looking for a laptop or docking station there’s this.

Exactly. People seem to be overlooking this fact. Its not for everyone so if it is not for you then move on already.

If I want to use an iPad like an iPad then I have to constantly remove the Magic Keyboard. And now I’m carrying a case less iPad in one hand and an empty case in the other.

Exactly.

I can easily see me pulling this thing off of the keyboard while walking the floor with a client and, it being so thin, slipping out of my hands and falling to the floor.

I never drop my iPhone when it’s in a case, but the few times I thought to carry it without a case, I couldn’t hold on to the damn thing.

I am in the same use scenario as you are.
iPad mini as a minimal and iPP 12 as a bigger minimal for longer trips, which does fine for most consumption of work and private info + minimal emails via soft keyboard. I will sometimes take my non-ten-key Apple keyboard and the Trackpad, if I know that I will need to answer many emails or will have down time.

For anything else, especially if I anticipate having to work on office documents, I take either a surface-Go or my MBA, as I just want to make sure I have the normal tools for the job. The USB-C cables becoming more common, such as a USB-C to Lightning cable, allows me to consolidate chargers, so that's not really an issue. Throw the Trackpad into the keyboard sleeve, and that doesn't bulk either.

The Surface-Go, although under-powered for heavy multi-tasking, does fine with things like Zoom or most of the office suite, so the mini + Go is my normal kit. The Go may get replaced by my 2020 MBA.

On-topic of the newly released Magic Keyboard .. I love the concept and hope it continues to get better.

It just does not fit my use case currently because I tend to have a laptop nearby all the time while at home or office, and do not anticipate using the iPad as a desktop device.. while, it is a bit too heavy for my liking for travel (the keyboard and trackpad combo weigh less than the MK for iPad 12). It would be a nice set up for desktop use of large iPad I think, where bluetooth switch will not be necessary.

If I anticipate having to type on my lap, I would bring a laptop anyway as per above, and I have also gotten pretty good at typing emails on my iPhone, sadly.

Everybody's use case differs, so IMHO.
