It's interesting reading the comments, and seeing what people's reaction is.
On the face of it, an iPad that weighs as much as a 13" Pro seems to miss the mark for most people (that I've seen). Certainly for me, if I had to have one device right now, it'd be the MBP - Just because it's easier to do work things, and some applications require it.
But, I'd just like to advocate for the people who actually like to use the "naked" iPad.
My one bugbear with the cheap folio type case for my existing 12.9" Pro is that I can't remove the iPad quickly. My personal usage of the iPad is generally at a desk or the couch. I'm not walking around with this monstrous iPad or trying to do things on the go - I can't imagine many people doing that with their 12.9" iPad either (appreciate some will).
The bare iPad feels great, and isn't too heavy despite its enormous size. The iPad with any case on starts to feel a little fatiguing after a while, and you end up having to rest it against an arm or something else in my experience.
So if I can get a case that has a great keyboard and trackpad built in, which allows me to have the iPad at a nice angle, but at the same time I can discard the case for 60% of my iPad usage..... I really think it's perfect for my situation, and anyone similar.
For those arguing that you can get a killer "proper" keyboard and full size trackpad - Yes, you are absolutely right.
My iPad typically goes between my home office (in the garage) and my home..... There is absolutely no reason I couldn't have little "set ups" in both of those places which allow me to dock the iPad on a stand and use the peripherals.
But.... it requires more hardware, more space, more thinking about charging devices, more hassle - More of everything that the iPad is supposed to solve.
Perhaps I'm in a small niche of the market, that this magic keyboard was aimed at.
- The ability to type on a great keyboard and trackpad without having to think or carry another piece of hardware
- The option to remove the entire case in a split second to take full advantage of the actual iPad hardware without any added weight of a case.
- Protection for the iPad whilst carrying it in a bag.
- A small amount of adjustability on the angle (from looking at the initial reviews, I can't see me using it in anything other than the "max" angle).
It just seems to have everything someone like me needs.
Sure, it's expensive (relative). But this is Apple, how are we still shocked by price.
If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. It’s a little cringe at this point to see people moaning about the price of things. You don’t see people on the Rolex forum say they can get a Casio for a fraction of the price (pure guess 😂).
Yes it's heavy (relative). But you are unlikely to feel the added weight in a bag, or on the desk..... So it only affects the people who carry it around in their hands all day (I probably wouldn't get it if this applied to me).
Lastly - Still no update for any UK peeps who had the 20th-22nd shipping date. I was really hoping to test it out today!
