is there ANY chance we see this available in white or light grey? I want this so badly but I don't want a black one

Let me see if I can phrase this correctly, if you remove it from the case and take it to the couch lets say, while the case is still open, is it still connected to the case via Bluetooth? As in the keyboard will still light up even though the iPad is not in the case? Or does it connect some other way like the smart connector?
No. It's going to act like the Keyboard Folio. The keyboard isn't connected by bluetooth. It's connected by those tiny flat dots on the back of the iPad Pro. (Jarman92 beat me to it)

$300 to $350 for something that looks like it was made by zagg. It’s not that bad but the trackpad looks and sounds so cheap, it only adjust to very little angles, it weighs as much as a laptop, and it’s the same material as the smart folio that we know will age quickly. I would wait for version two and that’s a lot coming from someone who buys all of apple’s New tech.

It still adjusts far more angles than any previous apple keyboard so I fail to see the issue there.

The material? Seems fine. The ASK looks worse due to the keys material not aging well but the keyboard is far better now so I don’t see the same issue

if you can’t afford it you can’t afford it

These were some pretty horrendous videos, but nice to see these getting into peoples hands. I would have thought Apple would get a few units out to reputable reviewers ahead of time. I know I am dying to get mine.

For those wondering about weight, the guy in the first video off by quite a lot. I'm reading that the new magic keyboard for the 12.9 is ballpark ~453 grams vs the lesser smart folio at ~407 grams. I can definitely handle that all day long. This puts the entire package at a still very manageable ~2.5lbs for a ~13" device.

I'm in for the high quality backlit keyboard, high quality and highly functional trackpad, increased stability, and angle adjustability. Less important but still worth mentioning.... I think its look and function is slick AF, and ability to charge from the base is fantastic.

Forward looking, I am looking forward to what iPadOS 14 has in store and the next refresh of the 12.9. I would have liked the memory upgrade on the 2020 model, but not remotely worth the $$ from 2018. Next revision should be pretty stellar.

Only 2.5 lbs.....
Yup. Get a real laptop..

It Must be under 2.0 lbs to make sense.
That MacBook 12 was that.

let's be honest, this adds bulk and heft. This isn't a case, this is a dock. People will dock their iPads at home for some productivity, but will take it on the go without the case. I've never gotten an iPad and thought "how do I make this heavier?" I still want to see better testing of this on the lap, on the couch, etc

Actually the 12" MacBook is/was a dream extreme portable dev machine (e.g. Xcode)... it's problem was that it's underpowered... an ARM MacBook would be ideal, but it doesn't exists.

The A13/A14 certainly has/will have the HP to run Xcode... but there's also the issue that development tools start requiring memory... The iPad is likely just a little to shy on that to be a good Xcode machine.

8GB would be the bare min... 16GB being a more realistic lower limit. That's not going to happen on an iPad, so hopefully the first ARM Mac will be a new 12" MacBook (or maybe lose the bezels and make it a 13" MacBook in the same volume ala XPS 13)
12" for software development? Get real. I prefer 38" (or more). Get a laptop with i7 CPU (or AMD) and enjoy software development.

Has anyone answered whether the USB-C charge port can provide power to another device? We know that port is charging only (no data), and we also know that its intended use is to provide power to charge the iPad Pro. But do we know whether that port can use the iPad's power to supply power to another device? i.e. Charge an Apple Watch connected to the MK port.

Thank you! Hope to get this cleared up soon!

Cancelled my pre-order. The holy grail is a case that can completely do both a "laptop mode" position and a "tablet mode" position. This is still not that. I don't need to spend an extra 400 dollars to turn my iPad Pro into a MacBook Air with a neutered OS.
Wait I’m a little confused by your last sentence in relation to why you’re canceling your order. Did you ever think the keyboard case was going to have an effect on the OS?
Also I don’t think it’s a big deal to just take the iPad off the keyboard for tablet mode. That’s the way the iPad was meant to be used in tablet mode, and it’s more nimble that way anyway.

Is anyone else kinda disappointed that it’s not a Force Touch trackpad?
Yeah, definitely. Looks to have quite a gap round it too. That’s gonna fill up with fluff and dust really quickly. Even if that doesn’t impair functionality it’s going to look naff. I suppose it probably wasn’t thick enough for force touch.

I think its look and function is slick AF
Brand new, yes. A few months on, not so much, if it’s the same material as the Folio. I’m seriously disappointed to hear they’ve kept the same outer material. If I don’t really love mine when it arrives I may send it back. Can always use Folio keyboard + Magic Trackpad for a better experience anyway, that’s barely less portable.

The keyboard is not battery operated.
Well I mean technically it *is*, it’s just that the battery is in the iPad :p

I can already hear a few Apple centric podcasters gushing over this thing.

It's always easy for Apple to hit home runs when the media that covers them lobs slow grapefruits over the plate all the time.

I was thinking the exact same thing about the keyboard/pad. The materials used look extremely cheap but I’ll wait to cast my final judgement when mine arrives next week. I knew the keys weren’t going to be covered in fabric like last time but so far not impressed by what I’m seeing. The hinge however looks nice to me. Which might be the main reason for the price of this particular item. I’m hoping I’m wrong about the keyboard, I really do... otherwise I’ll end up returning it and go back to the previous Apple keyboard case.

and I'm so glad he posted this... because it just took away my desire to own one. Time to wait for the base line iPad to get updated and grab that. I always want to use an iPad for more, but it's just easier for my work to use a laptop or desktop. he just saved me $900-1200 bucks.

Exactly, that’s why I won’t get it either.

I needed to confirm that this keyboard doesn’t fold on the back, to be able to use it like a tablet without removing the keyboard. Now it is confirmed, so I won’t spend those 350 bucks.

By the way, I’d like to find a solution to use an external trackpad with my 11” iPad Pro and my Mac mini at the same time. Sadly, the official Magic Trackpad doesn’t allow for a hot-swipe from one device to another... Maybe getting two magic trackpads but that takes a lot of space on my desk.

Does anyone know if the trackpad of this thing lets you swipe over to the previous page in Safari and go forward to other pages? Using left and right arrows in menu bar, or a two key punch just isn't my thing.

Canceled as well. I know the keyboard will be much better than my keyboard folio but I only use the keyboard half the time. The other half I have it folded back and laying flat to make notes or just sit on the couch and read. I could remove the iPad each time it’s magnetized but I dont want to get in a position where I’m having to go get the keyboard to use it. I really like that my keyboard is with me. I do not like feeling of the keys while in portrait mode but I’ve gotten used to it over time. I plan to replace my 2018 12.9 next release so maybe I will reconsider at that time versus buying the smart folio that I already have.
