What the hell? Version numbers have never followed mathematically. The point is simply a separator. Why are we seeing a flurry of complaints about the number 10.10? Why didn't you complain when there was, say, 10.9.1? What about 10.4.10?

People just can't stop complaining!

Yeah, I really don't get why people are so mystified by this. What about dates, for example?

05.30.2014

Nobody has a problem with that, do they? Or the fact that 12.31.2014 is followed by 01.01.2015. That's much weirder than version numbers, imho...

I'm actually kind of hoping they drop the charade that the X in OS X stands for "ten" and just call the thing OS X 11...
I'm with you in the 'X = ex' rather than 'X = ten' bit; it was always a Unix-y X, no matter what Steve said. 'Oh es ten ten point ten'? 'Oh es ten ten point ten point ten' in a year's time?

But... you're not suggesting that OS X 10.10 be named OS X 11, are you? We'll have to disagree on that one.

I'd be happy for OS X 10.10 to become simply 'oh es ex ten'.

Awesome video!!!

Yosemite is unreal. I have been there several times, and it is amazing every time.

Have you been to any other national parks? Because I gotta say, Yosemite wouldn't even be in my top three national parks in California alone. If I were to visit more Californian national parks, I imagine it would come dead last as it's certainly dead last of all the many, many national parks I've seen across the country. My visit left me profoundly sad and disgusted. The only redeeming feature of Yosemite in my mind is that it attracts all the horrible masses so the rest of the parks remain actually somewhat beautiful and clean.

There was a moment, I remember, standing in a parking lot, seeing trash and people everywhere. There was a single, sad-looking deer, that only I had apparently noticed. Very nearby were several large buses, all running, spewing out their pollution even though they weren't moving or going to move any time soon. The air was thick with it. The whole valley, I remember, was filled with smog. Hundreds of tourists were milling about, getting on and off busses, yelling at each other, taking pictures of each other, not even seeing the wildlife around them. It really disturbed me, and really changed my entire view of our national parks system. What disturbed me the most was how the deer seemed so resigned to all of it, like she didn't know anything better. She had become used to the insanity around her, the crowds and the noise and the trash. I cannot imagine what it's like to actually work in that park as a ranger, and see sights like that every day. If it wasn't for my visits to Sequoia and Kings Canyon that same trip to CA, to remind me that not every park is like Yosemite, I'm not sure I would want to visit another national park again.

My asthma, which was normally under very good control, made it impossible for me to stay in Yosemite for very long. I was having trouble breathing after just a couple hours, in a national park, in a place where living things are supposed to be protected and celebrated. I can only imagine what that sort of environment was was doing to the wildlife that has to live there.

So yeah, for what it's worth, if the next OS X is really called Yosemite, I hope Yosemite gets more attention, because it needs it. Something has gone very, very wrong in that valley. There's a delicate balance between letting people in to see nature and gain an appreciation for it, and protecting that nature from harm. Yosemite is out of balance. It's a stain on an otherwise wonderful parks system. It's an abomination.

If you've only ever been to Yosemite, or maybe just a few of the most popular parks, you really owe it to yourself to see some of the others. It will change your view of Yosemite forever.

It'd be cool if they could license Yosemite Sam to be the face and voice for some sort of reanimated Clippy replacement ("It looks like- I say it looks like yer tryin' ta open that thar file. Ya want me to shoot it fer ya, ya varmint?").

Or maybe the voice of Siri on OS X.

And OS X 10.10 Yosemite will be all about simplifying the appearance and improving the usability for first time users - there's a story that the Park Service in Yosemite has quite a problem with bears going after trash cans, and they've experimented with various tricky-to-open trash cans (think "childproof cap"), but the problem they run into is there's something of an overlap between the smartest bears, ... and the dumbest campers.

So, Yosemite will be all about intuitive user interface.

Just seems to make more sense to me. 10.10 just looks weird. 11 or XI seems so much nicer.

I kind of agree about the XI, but they dropped 'MAC' from OS X to simplify the 'X' brand. Again 'X' is simple and straight forward in comparison to 'XI' - I know it's 1 letter - but from a branding and marketing perspective it makes sense to keep it as simple as possible.. and 'X' is still 'cool branding'.

I think if / when systems amalgamate further it could go to 'Xi' but it wouldn't surprise me if they scrapped the 'X concept' all together in favour of creating something 'fresh' for another 10-20 years.

The question is - what's simpler, bigger and bolder than 'X'?

/2 cents.

I don't know why people are saying its going to be called iOS X or OS XI, it's OS X.

How about OSXIIIXXXIXOSIXIXIXSOXIXIXISIXOSIXOSI??
I reckon that's a winner

Heh, perhaps Yosemite is actually a move away from 'Californian landmarks' in the direction of cartoon characters, and we'll get OS X 10.11 Yogi.

I might be in the minority but I preferred cat names to be honest.

Considering i have deep and personal disdain for nearly all things California, I'd vote for just about anything but this Cali-loving crap. But alas, I'm probably also in the minority.

They could have gone with other mighty animals, planets... anything...

I kind of hated the cat names, too, frankly. But they were at least better than Apple's Californication.

OS X is above the ground, iOS 8 is under the ground. What's missing is ground level. The announcement of the new OS is imminent ;)

The new OS will be called something like xOS, based on iOS, and it is without finder but with springboard. All the applications from Apple including all the pro tools will be available. All the application must be purchased from App store.

I agree, though I suspect just about ANY theme will have its detractors. The Cali love fest, though... blegh. It just rubs me the wrong way.

I really think they just thought the water looked cool, and made for a nice contrast to the Yosemite-themed OS X. Yosemite because they're really pushing this California thing hard for some reason. Water because water isn't a mountain.

The water will be the default background for the iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2 in the fall, and pictures from Yosemite the default desktop for new Macs.

That's it.

I really dislike OS X Yosemite.

It just automatically makes me think of looney tunes cartoons and childlike things. Not a good OS X name in my opinion.

Space names would be much cooler. OS X Andromeda.
No matter what they name it, someone will really dislike the new name. Maybe it's just your turn.

Like most people here, I think Yosemite is going to be the name. Certainly not "El Cap", because the banner clearly shows that someone has crossed that landmark off with a big white "X"

I don't think the non-intuitive pronunciation will be an obstacle. Anyone who grew up with Peanuts TV specials probably struggled over how to pronounce Linux.
