The iPhone will have lots of industry beating features. The quality of these images really isn't one guys. If you think these are utterly amazing for a cell-phone camera, you've not looked at enough cell-phones. The colour cast on the first really isn't very good and the second is struggling with the dynamic range of the scene.

for instance. OK - not similar settings or scenes, but quite clearly cameras that match and likely exceed the quality of these shots were seing.

The iPhone images are good, better than many, but they're nothing special, nothing some other phones can't match or beat. Now - Steve likes his 'one last thing' moments...If it can record good quality video, 640 x 480 to drop straight onto your AppleTV ..THAT would be exciting.

nice zelda shirt. Definately a programmer. p.s. there is a woman in the only other pic - why did you guys decide that when they said "she" they were talking about the guy eating toast?

Zelda Shirt? I thought that was the iPhone's life projector! (it's one of the features that made the price so high ) Gonna take a lot more toast to regen that much!

Don't quote me, but I believe that's BJ's restaurant next to the Apple Campus.

I was wondering if anyone was going to try and identlfy the restaurant. :)

If this turns out to be real then someone is going to get fired Monday. Even if neither of the people in the photos are connected to Apple directly, someone will know who they are and tie them back to someone.

Is it really worth getting someone canned to get a rumor?

I seriously doubt anyone will get fired over this. It was a simple mistake, and not much new information was revealed as a result.

Nobody's "getting excited" over these pics being better than any phone known to humanity :p

But a lot of phones have really poor cameras, while this image looks pretty decent. That makes this good news. Nobody demands that the iPhone must have the best camera ever seen in a phone, and nobody who owns some other phone needs to feel any challenge towards their choice.

are you serious? This person deserves exactly what he gets. Im sure this guy has signed more than one or two NDA's that probably stated doing something like this was against his own interests, and on top of that he took the pictures in public with an unreleased product AND posted them on a PUBLIC image hosting server. I hope these pics are not legit or else I would be concerned about the iphone considering this is a guy working on it :p

Of course I'm serious. Someone that works on the iPhone team takes a few random pics on an iPhone and posts them. What is the big deal? I'm quite sure he/she didn't expect and couldn't have predicted that some superdork with too much time on his hands was going to track him down like darn bloodhound.

exciting...but I want to see more iPhone!

It better come out in June and not get delayed...then I can start waiting for it to come to Canada in 2043. :p

Can you upload some photos taken by your phone?

I'll bite.

Here are photos from my recent trip to Japan. I took my Sony Ericsson k790a phone with me even though I couldn't use it in Japan (damn WCDMA technology...). I did however use it just to take pictures and it came out pretty well.

If anything, I'm so used to having a Xenon flash on my phone that I wish the iPhone had it.

The camera is a 3.2mp.

I agree these photos aren't really anything special, sorry. I have a nokia 6280 (which I generally hate as I'm onto my third 3 free replacement and the bugs still haven't been ironed out) but the 2MP camera is pretty decent and as good or bretter than these.

As to whether the employee will be fired, I think this is all part of the hype. just hiding nuggests out there to get people excited. They must know it will be picked up on forums such as this.

Just what else is lurking out there then??

Why this is a big deal is beyond me. It's not like the iPhone has an amazing camera. My phone has a camera that is as good as if not better than the iPhones. Move along people...
I agree. They are acceptable, but Sony Ericsson's camera phones offer better image quality at a higher resolution. At the price, I would expect it to be competitive in this area, not meeting the standard of last year's, or even the year before's, top of the line phones. There are two main reasons many people will wait for the next generation iPhone: lack of 3G/HSDPA and a 3.2MP camera with auto focus and a flash.

How anyone can make a judgement about how good the iPhone camera is compared with other phones, based on just two pictures taken in less than ideal circumstances, is beyond me.

You guys are missing the point. This story isnt about the "quality" of the iPhone's built-in camera. Its just that the images were CREATED using the iPhone. If these are legit, its the first thing we've seen from iPhone ever, whether it be an application, wallpaper, ringtones, whatever.

Get it?? So, posting of the comparison photos can from other cell phone cameras can stop now. ;)

They're probably fake because these photos look like they were taken in very public places, and except for a few big whigs who are allowed to carry them around, I didn't hear anything about Apple letting test users use the iPhone out in the open.

From iPhotos get info thing.. it says your camera make and moddel. and it says Software : Photoshop CS3. i wasnt aware that was released yet. Are you one of the lucky few to be selected for pre-release testing.

General questions about the phones with a built-in flash and image quality better than these "unaccaptable" iPhone results: how many of them have dimensions as small as an iPhone? I'd love a flash, zoom, etc., but not if it makes the phone bigger. I have a camera already for those needs, and no phone will equal it when I need top quality. Top quality isn't what a phone needs. What the iPhone does have, if these photos are real, is very GOOD quality, meeting a standard of usefulness than I have seldom seen in phone pictures. I'm sure, moving forward, that this same quality is no longer the exception with newer phones. That takes nothing away from the iPhone.

CS3 has been out for a week or two now.

'Lucky few'? Anyone with a valid CS2 licence could download and use the CS3 beta. And the final CS3 version has been shipping for about ten days, now. (It was announced in the middle of March.)

I love how some people think anyone would be fired over this..

How could they? Why would they? This hasn't revealed anything at all other than the camera works.

Having a tiny fraction of the target market know that the camera inside the iphone a) works and b) isn't terrible isn't doing anyone any harm.. This is hardly a leak, or anythign apple would care much about.

Some of you guys act like infinite loop is Area 51 or something.

I wonder whether you could go straight to Flickr from the iPhone and upload photos taken with it, instead of having to transfer the photos to your computer and upload from there. I am guessing the iPhone would need some kind of Finder in order to do that.

Still, you could use the email to Flickr option and I am sure developers could make plugins/widgets for it.

I still dont get what the hype is all about?
the iphone is neat but not like it is going to change the world the second it comes out.

Maybe not at the first second but the iPhone is going to change our mobile life, public wifi and influence a big portion of the internet. This is bigger than the Mac and iPod combined, its a combination of the two that will revolutionize our digital lives. :D
