Meh. I've been using a 3.2MP phone for the last year, with a proper flash. There are 5MP phones out already. The iPhone camera is, in a word, crap. The pictures here are no big deal, I don't know why everyone says they're good for a camera phone... Maybe because phones in the US tend to be 1 generation behind European phones and about 2-3 generations behind Asian ones? I had a K750i two years ago which had 2MP and images this good.

The meats photo is just crap, but the guy eating toast is very high quality for a 2MP camera. If it can consistently take good shots like that I would say its even better than my 3 MP camera on my k790a.

This definitely an awkward thread.

I wish/hope that this guys identity is safe otherwise he is probably going to get into some trouble.

Rotated 90 degrees what the...??

.....when I view the pic of "the guy eating toast" in Preview.app it rotates it the right way up... what the? Does the iPhone record ORIENTATION information into the image?

have a look at the TIFF info in Preview. There is a code (in this case 6) for orientattion property.Remember, the iPhone detects autmatically it's orientation.

My almost-free phone shoots pics at 5MP and transfers them to my 'puter via Bluetooth. What's all the fuss about?

The "fuss" as you say it is that we're all Apple fans and these are the first pictures from the first Apple camera. In addition to being the first they're also of good quality, especially for a cell phone camera. My question to you is whether those 5MP pictures are any good from your phone. I've seen phones with integrated cameras and high pixel counts that still look awful.

Actually it is not the first Apple camera they made a camera in the early 1990's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quicktake

If these pictures are real then they seem to be better than most phone pics that I have seen and I would like to have a good phone camera for when I don't have my SLR.

Firstly, being a blinkered Apple fanboy will earn you scorn even here. Secondly, yes, my pics (run through editing software if necessary) would match these.

If these are indeed authentic then I will be even more excited to get an iPhone. The quality for a phone camera is excellent. It's really nice to be able to get a decent quality photo from device you are always carrying. Sweet!!:D

Absolutely agreed, the camera on my SK3 is a joke - complete waste of time. If these are real, it'll be great!

Thats cause you live in London where they actually have cool phones. The US is LAME when it comes to keeping up with phone tech. In addition, even though you guys have some seriously cool GSM phones, the GSM providers in this country don't really care about bringing out the coolest and greatest even if they could easily import them.

I don't really like the quality of the second picture. The lights in the background apear to be messing the picture up.

Like someone mentioned, having image stabilization would be sweet.

Actually I'm in Japan. Maybe even more ahead of the curve? Still, I don't believe 5M is the norm.

Just found this on that flickr account that the original pics came from.

Notice the PowerMacs have blocked ports and non standard graphics cards.

Theyre the intel development kit machines, the very first available (only to developerts) mac's capable of running OS X intel.

I'm guessing seeing as the mac pro's are out now, all the development machines have been returned, and thats why they're there.

They're probably fake because these photos look like they were taken in very public places, and except for a few big whigs who are allowed to carry them around, I didn't hear anything about Apple letting test users use the iPhone out in the open.

I didn't hear anything about Apple telling you anything about anything. :p

And no one at Apple is loosing their job(s) over these pix. No way.

FWIW: those pix (especially the 1st) look way better than what my VZW Treo 650 can capture.

Hmmm

This thread brings up a couple interesting points. I for one think that the information in these photos is spoofed. Unless iPhoto is partial to images taken with the iPhone (hey... it's totally possible...) it doesn't really seem to read information from the pictures I've taken with 4-5 different cell phones.

On another note... c'mon a chance to take pictures with an iPhone and a huge rack of meat was the best they could think of?

Haha. Oh dear.

This particular rumor has yielded some interesting replies.

"My phone can beat up your phone's dad. And my country has better Phones than yours!"

If these are legit pictures then they look pretty good! That much is certain. If you have a 20,000 megapixel camera from Luxembourg, or a 100,000 megapixel camera from Japan, then rest assured, your hard earned supremacy in the land of cell phone cameras shall remain unchallenged by the iPhone, no one is saying it's the greatest camera ever created by man or celestial being, you came up with that one all on your own ;). If you have a 3-5 megapixel camera from the US or some other totally not European or Asian (and therefor far less awesome, apparently) country, keep in mind that megapixels are far from the lone distinguishing element by which to gauge the quality of your camera. You can have a 1,000,000 megapixel camera, but if the optics suck, then its sad day in happyville for you. Anyway. The moral of the story: Some phones are better than others. Peace.

These are not the best pics ever from a camera phone, but they great pics for a 2MP flashless camera phone. I also noticed when I loaded the big pic into iPhoto it oriented the pic properly.

I figured the iPhone would probably use the same type of camera hardware seen in the laptop iSight.

Er...yes...that was kind of the point being made. Aka despite what some people might think this isn't the best thing since sliced bread.
