Has Apple ever released a new iOS device iteration (besides iPods) without upgrading the chip?

That scenario will be iPad 3 and iPad 4 fiasco all over again.

The original iPhone and the 3G had the same chip. Only scenario I can think of off the top of my head.

Same with everyone owning a iPad 4.

iPad 4: November 2012
iPad 5 (BIG UPDATE): March 2013

Not even four months.

If they release in March with the A6X, I'll go ahead and start the thread: "Fall iPad 6--everything iPad 5 was supposed to be; Re: A7X"

The mic hole actually makes me think it's real.

The reality is that it's expected to be redesigned exactly like the mini right? The mini houses a 4:3 display, the full size houses a 4:3 display. The cases should by all rights be exactly the same in every way but actual size.

If someone wanted to fake this, all they'd need to do is take a picture of an ipad mini case. If it's not next to anything to give it scale, no one would be able to tell the difference. Even with another mini case next to it, it's easy enough to scale one up.

Right, but my point is that despite being a redesign, I expect it to retain characteristics that have always been the same. Look at it this way. This redesign is based on the mini, but the mic changed position, from n both different sizes.

This is just my opinion as a 15 year Apple fanboy, but I am SICK of Apples obsession with how thin something has to be. The thinner they make something adds to their profits because they don't need to use as much material. I want a bigger battery. I want my iPhone to last more than 2 days. The new iMac is ugly from the side. Phil tried to hide it during the keynote. I'm not going to own something that has been coined the "baby bump" iMac.

The new beamforming microphone setup they are rolling out on iOS devices and Macs requires at least two microphones.

That was my other thought, but where would the other mic go? Maybe on the bottom with the newly redesigned speaker grill?

lol... people really call it that ?

Thinner is lightweight..... but then you also have more heat problems...

Its like a bloody scale..... Gold, or no gold.

Apple people prefer to be rich.

Eugh...

I'm not a fan of adopting the anodized slate look for the iPad. I much prefer the sleek aluminum look and feel of the iPad 2 through iPad 4.

Then get the white and silver version. I despise when people complain about something when that problem can be resolved by getting another version of the same device.

Yes. Just changing the form factor is the equivalent of releasing new Air Jordans every year. Same basic thing, new "feature" for new hype, new spin. The commercials outlining the "do not disturb" feature especially intrigue me. THAT is a top feature Apple thinks iOS offers?

Some folks argue that tablets are slowly killing the laptop computer for most consumers. Thus, something will eventually kill the tablet. I believe it will be some kind of super-phone that can power multiple types of input devices. For example, tablets will simply become thin, lightweight monitors that run wirelessly off your phone.

The tablet/smartphone market is already basically a menu of screen sizes. There is not much difference in core functionality.

I agree. I was going to say that at home, a tablet would still be preferable but I wonder now if the smart phone wouldn't still be the focus but more centered towards entertainment. That said, for web browsing, a tablet size would be better but the tablet could just be a dumb input terminal linked to the smart phone.

If the rumors are true with a new lighter iPad and iPad Mini with retina it will be a hard choice between them. Hope I can afford one when they are released.

ETA - I agree that in the future you could have a smart phone that will be your computer, wirelessly link to a proper keyboard and LCD (maybe your smart TV) to then access you files in the cloud and local networkj storage. Smart phones and tables will take over from laptops and desktops in the not too distant future.

Back facing camera

Question: Why does Apple not offer a version without back-facing camera? None of my friends has ever used this camera. It seems a complete waste of resources. I'd buy a $5 cheaper iPad without this camera without hesitation.

But.................

From day 1 of owning an iPad I always said I wanted a thinner bezel and virtually everyone said I was wrong and the bezels should stay as they are.

Now almost everyone is saying the opposite and they like a smaller bezel.

It would get more expensive because costs to have two production lines running simultaneously are higher. So expect to pay more for a version without camera.

I'm gonna sound like a buffoon.

But what's a Bezel?

Native split-screen type capabilities would be great. Being able to FaceTime and read/type/etc would be great. No need for full-screen FaceTime at all times.
I really like this idea. I can just see all the apps arrange themselves when you open a splitscreen, so you can look at all your apps while already using a slim version of an app that supports the new split-UI.

That sounds do-able!
