Yeees? aaand?. We use spare parts (not at Apple, at not-related product/toy producing company) from older working/prototype models/other related products to kitbash prototypes, and sometimes even final items, being going on forever, everybody does it. Wish they had the time of bottomless monies to create a new unique part for every prototype company I have worked with made.
That said... 3 GRAND per finished, not ready for prime time, unit? Jeez H. Chris, Apple, this is quite a gamble.😳

Apple's own engineers said this product was no where near ready. This is CEO Tim Cook pushing this not ready product out the door for $3,000.

Where to begin with this one!

According to the recent article that I assume you are referring to, it was NOT engineers but rather industrial designers that wanted to delay.

And why did they want to delay?

According to the article, they wanted to delay "until a more lightweight version of AR glasses became technically feasible. Most in the tech industry expect that to take several more years."

Basically, they objected to the entire product category and wanted to wait until they could create an entirely different product category that may be a decade away.

Nowhere in the article does it say that anyone at Apple thought "this product was no where near ready" [sic] as you claim.

You also assume that the $3,000 retail price is true, but based on... what exactly? Rumors. Remember how those price rumors worked out with the OG iPad?

Finally, I would encourage you to think critically and not simply swallow any rumor and unnamed source's opinion as fact.

There are lots of different people with different agendas spreading information AND misinformation. Don't get played.

Looking to see what this is and how it all pans out, but personally I have no interested in VR so will most likely not be buying it......

You realize the PSVR2 only works if you have $500 PS5 right?
True enough there is a £900 buy in from scratch but many people already have a PS5 which means you can still make use of the hardware sans headset if you want. If Apple's headset was a $500 addon to your Mac that tethered by USB-C and just acted as an iMac with an infinite desktop it would offer better value than a $3k device you can only use for 2 hours at a time.

I'm also interested knowing that Apple's focus is AR and not VR.

It will be glasses along with a suite of interesting AR apps available, for both personal and commercial uses, on launch date.

And it won't be $3,000. That's just cudgel people insist on clinging to hoping it will be a flop.

Really? nobody?

I bought a PSVR2 for $500 and it’s brilliant. Apple are going to have to go a long way to make people pay $2500 extra.
How far can you get from your house wearing the PSVR2? If Apples device is AR and you wear it like spectacles then its an entirely different market. Hopefully whatever they make doesn't make me puke like VR does

Apple's device won't be any smaller than the PSVR2 if its got the same level of tech packed inside plus a battery and an independent processor. I for one have no desire to walk the streets looking like Rick Moranis in Spaceballs!

AR spectacles do exist but the tech is not ready for the streets yet. I'd love a pair of elegant AR glasses with external LiDAR sensors, electrochromic lenses for small internal projectors that can pull in IOT data to help navigate the world but that is at least a decade away from happening.

Large technology becomes small technology. We didn’t get small cell phones without first getting the DynaTac. We didn't get the Palm Pilot without first getting the Newton MessagePad. We didnt get compact digital cameras without first getting the Kodak DSC. We didnt get the iPod Nano without first getting the iPod. We didn’t get the MacBook Air without first getting the MacPortable.

So you’re not getting the small AR glasses you want without Apple first releasing a larger VR headset.

I am not even close to being interested currently in VR - maybe a bit of AR - but I am trying to move away from tech time spent during the day.

But I must say I am interested what Apple does with it.
👌
Yep, sure hope it's a lot more useful than what Meta is doing.

Sad thing is that the rumoured Apple product will lend legitimacy to Meta.. They are squarely placed to take advantage of a position opposite Apple on this, and that is a quite lucrative position. I bet you it is the Zucks wet dream that Apple releases this...

So much so that releasing it in 2-3 years in a better format is a strong argument. Just let Facebook cook...

The dilemma is that they COULD get a real head start, or the concept rots on the vine and becomes impossible to launch.

I doubt that one will be mass market either, it will iteratively get there. A $1500 headset will allow it to be more in the budget of corporate spenders and existing high end headsets. These are basically computers. The average consumer will only spend that much if it replaces other devices. I think Apple needs something really low end in an iPad price range aimed at media consumption, but it might make more sense to launch such a device in a couple years when there is enough content to be worth buying a device. There should be high end and low end just like the iPad line where the low end is aimed at consumption and the high end as a computer. The glasses are probably in another category entirely. I see that as more in the Apple Watch space.
You can certainly argue that the technology is still 3-5 years away, and I'm a huge enthusiast. However, ~$1,500 would not be unreasonable for a mature product, of which this is not. Reports are that Cook pushed to release it, even though internal concerns are that it's not ready. Cook wants to retire sooner rather than later, and wants the credit for releasing this, even if it might be half-baked.

In a Sun-Tzu Art of war way.. It might make sense to not release it until Facebook/Meta buckles. However I think I rather see that Apple joins the fray sooner then later though, since I do believe Apple is in danger of "resting on its laurels" with their products..

An AR/VR device that is mainstream and good enough for remote-working and communication.. ALL other advancements are a plus ontop…

Smartphones or the small screen with touch input is starting to show diminishing returns. AR glasses will be a way to advance past the inferior usage model of a smartphone… If there is no advancement here, iPhone will likely start going downhill soon with early signs already showing.. Android will soon be fast and "good enoughTM" to roll over iPhone… IF there is no differentiator, AR is the only thing I see that can be that, along w Ai.

Investigating a new UI paradigm, or rather a new display technology, can’t be bad. Even if it goes the way of Apple TV.

I believe that releasing a product will lead to them getting real evolutionary advancement based on costumer experience and design iteration… You might think the iPhone came suddenly without pre-amble.. Not true, they made the iPod and the iPhone came from that AND it was an open secret that Apple would do A phone for years and years... The real surprise was that it revolutionized the entire computing industry...

Do I believe it will be a super-hit-out-the-park product version 1? Likely not. Apple will stumble with input since they always have.. But it will show IF just using your hands is enough for AR/VR input. IF Apple releases an API for controlling input AND their glasses sell enough.. The Logitechs and others will make input devices that are superiour.. Why would it be any different here then Mac/PC and mice/keyboards/drawing tablets? You enjoy your Apple mice? I didn’t think so! I want force feedback and minute control… That is something I am willing to pay 500$ for on its own for a better experience. Provided it means I can do art in a similar way to using a brush and feel microtensions and the surface of a canvas or sculpture. A product like that is an engineering challenge… It takes iteration and development over time. Let the wacoms/Logitechs do their best to make gaming/design/excercise versions…

In essence, Apple should make some sleek gloves with basic good functionality and awesome design. Then release an open API for development.

Apple CAN make superior AR/VR glasses AND Apple has the cpu’s that are ideal for this.. Apple is the best/biggest company at making mobile devices + they have the moneybags to pull it off.

AR/VR will prove to be another display technology… If you think about it, HOW do you expect to make a display that BLOWS the entirety of the tech world away and attracts the whole world to your platform (What Meta is trying) It’s a display technology that Apple needs to figure out. And they will..

IS Meta likely to figure out a platform for mobile devices? I doubt it… They would do ALOT better at figuring out a software/communications AR/VR platform then hardware… I bet they will pull out soon enough from the hardware game and do Facebook for AR/VR instead… If anything, they are hurting themselves putting so much resources towards hardware and making an entire hardware platform instead of focusing on building facebook for AR/VR… Realistically, Apple SHOULD be so far ahead in hardware that their efforts will faceplant. They should reach out to apple and make a deal where they capitulate their hardware IF apple prioritizes facebook on their devices(like the google deal)… It would be a kickass strategy (one that Apple would likely consider and take, but imho shouldn’t…)

I predict eyes to win out in the “mousing wars" Eyes can track and do "clicking" infinitely faster then a hand… It’s the highest bandwith organ with a low latency connection to the brain (superfast muscles) Yes, likely the fastest/most accurate way to sort and organize items. HOWEVER probably tiring and best for short bursts of organizing/doing tasks. Also alot of people suffer from eye issues soooo. Who knows. Very interesting though…

In short, I think Tim Cook is right, apple needs to put out something now or loose valuable r&d and patents. Heck, if it looks cool and works w iphone well… It will be a winner in a short time… All though, I DO think no-one wants to walk around with a “mug-me" advertisement of 3000$ on their face… I am sure it will take off just by novelty. But there needs to be a cheaper version for daily AR fast… And it will come…
