Just saying, compare it to something like the Shield TV. It has faster memory and bus, but it does 4k 60hz at 40bit color and has a scaling and frame interpolation chip in the signal prorcessor so that you won't get lipsync issues when a frame is dropped which Apple TV lacks.

Could you do a teardown and X-ray the motherboard for us, then we'd have a definitive answer on all these things, RAM questions included. Cheers.

I may be wrong but isn't 4K for most of the existing movies (and maybe even TV shows) simply a case of a new 4K scan? Isn't the source material already of higher resolution than 1080?

Furthermore, many new Netflix shows are in 4K now – and when it comes to the fiction TV show market, they produce the most interesting and exiting new content at the moment. (At least IMO.)

I believe you'll find that mainstream 4K video production began 2 years ago mainly for documentaries and sports events, and what is claimed to be 4K content isn't, its upscaled and not true UHD 4K. I doubt you'll find one shooting a Modern Family or Blacklist episode. Modern movies are shot in $k & 5K, but what they are encoded to is the important point, and that is 1080p for broadcast and Blueray production. Storage of 4K & 5K content is very cost prohibitive at the moment. Which is why Apple was asking the networks to stream content from their own servers, not from Apples.

No 4K, No Gigabit, No HDMI 2.0, No optical audio.
No buy !!!

I would have loved 4K, but it is no surprise that ATV4 doesn't have it.

I wonder if it did have 4K, how many people would be hitting the forums complaining that Apple doesn't have any 4K iTunes content?

Call me picky.
But knowing Apple's attention to the most minute aspect of every detail....

Why is the whole device Black, and the Remote Black, and yet, they supply a white cable?

Quite surprised they didn't put a USB port on the Apple TV itself to allow charging of the remote....

Or they could of put a little Docking Area into the plastic, so you could sit/slot the remote onto the Apple TV whenever you need to charge, as opposed to finding that dam cable again and finding a USB port off something to charge it.

Apple are obsessed with messy cables still ?
I know how cool people here would think it was if the remote could sit/stand/dock into the actual Apple TV box, if you wanted it do.

I don't believe it has an HEVC decoder. It doesn't have a graphics engine capable of doing jitter and drop frame correction.

Do we know that for sure? The iPhone 6 does FaceTime using h265 so must have it built in-is it in the A8 chipset or the graphics chip? If so does the ATV4 have the same chipset?

I, for one, think that would be hideous. Not to mention that a lot of people are probably going to start hiding the AppleTV now that the remote doesn't use IR, and your device doesn't need to have a direct line of sight with anything, or even be visible at all.

But if you REALLY want a dock for your remote, http://www.apple.com/shop/product/ML8J2AM/A/iphone-lightning-dock-silver
There ya go!

Sorry but I don't believe what you say is truthful.
Perhaps it is, but I doubt it.
I struggle to imagine how, if Apple has included the "optional" ability to dock the remote to the device (which would be almost an unnoticeable change to the moulding of the box itself, you would be here posting how HIDEOUS it looks and how Apple was wrong for allowing that OPTION.

Sorry, don't believe you.

Yes, I understand some may wish to hide the Apple TV away, out of sight. Indeed, fair point, however an OPTIONAL small area in the Apple TV casing to sit the remote on to charge it, would have no negative affects on those who wish to hide the device away.

Ok so now we have an iOS (or tvOS) device that has a usb type c port, while the remote has a lightning port, but the included cable is lightning to usb 2.0. Plus, there is a power cable even though usb type c would have been more than sufficient to power this device.

Am I the only one who is confused by all of this?

This is my biggest issue with Apple's ecosystem. There are now 10 connectors/cables.

1.) Lightning connector
2.) USB Type C
3.) Magsafe 2
4.) Magsafe for Apple Watch
5.) Micro USB (for all Beats gear)
6.) Power cable for Apple TV
7.) 30 pin connector for older iOS devices
8.) Magsafe 1 for older Macbooks
9.) New magnetic connector on iPad Pro
10.) Batteries for magic trackpad, keyboard, etc...

This shouldn't happen in a closed tightly integrated ecosystem. I wonder if these guys ever travel or do they live under a rock in Cupertino.

BTW, I will be preordering the new iPhones for me and the family in 90 minutes.
If you travel with enough devices to use all the cables you listed, you're doing something wrong.

The new Apple TV hardware specifications:

1. NO UHD 2160p support (only 1080p)
2. NO optical audio
3. NO HDMI 2.0 standard (only 1.4)
4. NO HDMI cable (available separately)
5. USB‑C port only for service and support
6. SIRI Remote available only in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Spain, United Kingdom, United States. In all other countries onscreen search

Not in Europe, Asia, Australia etc.

The Xbox One does come with HDMI cable in the box in Australia (at least the original batch did), as for Blu Ray players, it varies from manufacturer, some do, some don't.

Was there any mention of this model supporting 3D content?

I didn't realise there was such a thing as over-editing until I saw this video. Couldn't go five seconds without some random edit to the clip, quite off-putting.

This is one thing among many that apple is being super greedy about. HDMI cables like most cables cost them pennies. Yet, they want to sell you a $29 HDMI cable separate from the aTV at the Apple Store. Just like they want to sell you the $19 Lightning cable and $19 wall plug separately...it's such a joke! Things like this really turn me off w/Apple sometimes. Acting like they don't have billions of dollars.

This is why they have billions.

The remote looks great, but universal remotes will have a tough time emulating its functionality.
Maybe not. There is an option to learn a remote:

Remote2.png

Apple seems to always to backwards with hardware revisions - you always lose a feature of function and it's really not acceptable. Optical port dropped despite having room in the device, the remote is only partially metal unlike the previous one. The remove requires charging via another cable, yet the older remote ran on a simply CR2023 lithium battery which was actually user replaceable.

When did opening up a device to replace a battery become more convenient than plugging it in?

And user replaceable? By the time a battery like this doesn't hold a decent charge anymore the remote itself is likely to be obsolete.

Don't know whether I missed this info or not... so I'm gonna ask anyway:

I got my current aTV connected to my Teufel 5.1. system via optical audio... how am I going to connect the 2015 aTV to the Teufel if the 2015 aTV only has audio output via HDMI to the TV? ... thats pretty odd.

// nevermind, I just checked and apparently my 2006 TV already got an optical output... so I guess that'd work.

Or if you need to connect directly to your audio system from the ATV4, for TV-less Airplay as an example, you can use the adapters that I mentioned in post #55.

For the people wondering about options for the loss of the optical ports, I quickly found these on Amazon.

HDMI to HDMI + Audio Adapter

HDMI Audio Extractor

I am sure there are others. I really don't like the idea of buying another thing to connect all my stuff, plus they are kinda big. But, they look like a solution to the ATV4 not having optical out.

So now you have to find a usb power adapter for your wall, great. Wouldn't it make sense to have a usb port at the back of the apple tv, so you can plug in the cable there, and charge your remote at the apple tv. That way you know where it is and its always close.
The way they have done it now will result the people in plugging in the remote in their kitchen, or where ever their phone charger is. Then they will sit down infront of tv, and go oh F***, remote is in the kitchen. Dumb move apple, thats just making something annoying.
