I'm glad they don't. Most of them just end up in landfills unused. And not just the landfills, but also the waste in resources in making them in the first place. Hundreds of millions of cables... billions.

Same with all those included earbuds. How many iPhones and iPods has apple sold in the last 10 years?

Please - no more included cables (at least after a cable type has become an inexpensive commodity).

While I definitely get your point it's super ridiculous for a company selling a music player not to include earbuds. :)

I like the rechargeable remote. Since I have an iPhone and iPad I already have a couple stands for charging right next to my Lazy boy.

To everyone complaining about the Lightning cable not being USB-C, you do realize that this isn't the final shipping package right? This is a dev kit. When the AppleTV ships in almost 2 months from now, I wouldn't be surprised if the cable is USB-C and perhaps even black.

This isn't a dev kit. He stated earlier in the comments that it is a consumer model.

Yes, it is. And this is what it will ship with.

Dumb question... Apple Website says that the new AppleTV does NOT play iTunes Music (my primary use of current ATV)... is this the case or is there a simple workaround?

So now you have to find a usb power adapter for your wall, great. Wouldn't it make sense to have a usb port at the back of the apple tv, so you can plug in the cable there, and charge your remote at the apple tv. That way you know where it is and its always close.
The way they have done it now will result the people in plugging in the remote in their kitchen, or where ever their phone charger is. Then they will sit down infront of tv, and go oh F***, remote is in the kitchen. Dumb move apple, thats just making something annoying.

I would imagine most people have electric wall sockets somewhere near their TV sets, into which they could plug a USB charger. It's just a guess, but I suspect it is very common to have electricity wired into TV rooms. No need to plug-in in the kitchen in those cases. I'm inferring from your post you may have electricity only in your kitchen and not anywhere near your TV, but I suspect you are in the minority. It also sounds as though finding a usb power adapter is tough where you live, which makes sense if you are in a geographical area where people sometimes don't have power in their TV rooms.

It really would have been ideal for there to be a connection for the remote right on the Apple TV unit.

Apple seems to always to backwards with hardware revisions - you always lose a feature of function and it's really not acceptable. Optical port dropped despite having room in the device, the remote is only partially metal unlike the previous one. The remove requires charging via another cable, yet the older remote ran on a simply CR2023 lithium battery which was actually user replaceable.

You will buy a new ATV

no 4K support & the loss of optical audio out = FAIL

Agree. Not to mention HDMI 1.4 not 2.0a. I also wonder why 10/100 Ethernet only. Apple must have paid extra to find a chip w/o 10/100/1000. Will you ever need more than 100 Mbps to this particular box? No. But, gigabit ethernet is universal now, and, there are switch ports that won't negotiate to 10 or 100 Mbps.

However, all that said, I appreciate the fact that this one is bigger and weighs more than the previous model. Less likely to get dragged off the stand by the HDMI cable.

What length hdmi cable should the apple tv come with? A three foot? That would be worthless since all my cables run behind the wall to my tv stand. As someone that used to sell tv's I know there are many different use cases and a 3 ft (or any specific lentgh) doesn't satisfy even a majority of them. My hdmi cables have to be 12-15 feet. So what do I do with my 3 foot one? Well according to some, since apple prints money, they should just put in a 6 foot hdmi! Now if I only need a 3 foot cable, ive got several extra feet of cable to manage behind my tv.

Also say I like the monoprice redmere hdmi, or say someone prefer's monster cables. If I run my hdmi yhrough the wall, I need to use one rated for such a task. Now we're talking building codes. Think those might be different in some of the places the apple tv is sold?

As for inclusion of earbuds: Headphones are an extremely personal decision. I don't prefer earbuds, I like over the ear. Unless im working out. Then I prefer wrap around the ear type. Different ears are different shapes. I have 5 or six pair of the included earbuds, several different iterations, laying in a desk drawer, unopened.

It's relative. Maybe you don't know me (or the average reader,) but all the vendors and tech manufacturers do, as do my 800k podcast subscribers!

I can't say in regards to most TVs that have HDMI, but those that i have seen also tend to have at least 1 USB port? Maybe plug into the TV's USB for charging?

I don't think they need that. Most HDTV's and subsequently newer TVs have USB ports that you can use to charge it.

Not really an attractive option for me in that our TV is at the top of a 12 foot wall.
Would be a long ugly cable.
Oh well.
