First Unboxing of New Apple TV Shows off Packaging, Device and Remote

Because a charge lasts three months. It is much easier to recharge your remote every three months than it is to go out and buy new batteries of some obscure size every year. At least it is in my lightly populated area.

"new batteries of some obscure size"

You mean AAA Batteries, which almost every remote control for every home TV/HiFi type device has used for the past two decades or more?
THAT Obscure size ?

Most people here do, sure. But you'd be surprised how many first time buyers of the aTV come into a retail store, don't have an HDMI cable and then bitch about having to either drop $29 on the cable at the store, or bitch about going to Walmart to grab one for $5. It would be nice if they just included the cable, as they include a cable with every other product they ship. Especially one that's so crucial to the device.

What length HDMI? There's no way they could supply a length that would work for enough people to be worthwhile. I buy an hdmi cable that's just long enough so there's not a ton of excess in the back of my media center. I have a 50ft hdmi cable in some places and a 3 ft in others. It's silly to include something that variable.

Since the iPad 3 days I've always had a charging cable which runs through my couch. I've upgraded to lighting and the 12w charger as each component gets upgraded.

My friends love it.
I do similar, works great, isn't as expensive as people would think.

And it saves me the endless and repeated stress of looking for the damn cord.

The current TV uses a certain flat, round battery and I ended up ordering them at Amazon. I'm on a path to only use rechargeable batteries in everything so I can stop buying batteries that end up in my silverware drawer, fall out of the package and then I can't tell if they are used or new or almost dead regardless. Just another action in my life plan to reduce my negative impact on the world, while still enjoying the luxuries. Corded mower, corded snow thrower, LED lightbulbs, rechargeable batteries, reusable grocery bags. Every time I get something new, I consider this and see if I can afford the option that's better for the environment. Not saying I couldn't do more, don't live like Ed Begley, but I know I do more than the average person and I feel good about that.

the video what it is, but you didn't pay much attention. There was a USB port on the Apple TV itself.
OP meant the Lightning cable has a USB 2.0/3.0 male end. The back of the Apple TV has a USB Type C port. OP is disappointed it doesn't come with an extra charging block for reason

OH JEEZ. What an ignorant question.

How so? The best place for a tv is slightly lower than the eye level of the people watching it. Since most people sit on furniture to watch tv, a few feet off the floor is the optimum level for a tv. I don't even like watching a tv hung over a fireplace, can't imagine watching one 10 feet off the floor!

This is in a bedroom on a very high-rise bed that is on a step platform.
The TV is a 65" on an articulating arm.
Like I said, "ignorant question". I'm moving on so bye.

@drusoicy How does the new AppleTV integrate with Apple Watch?

It would be great if when you're home, your iPhone would defer to AppleTV when responding to requests from the Watch. Asking a Siri question to your Watch would give you an answer on the TV. Asking to play music would play on the TV instead of on the phone. Adjusting volume on the Watch would do so on AppleTV.

Loss of optical shouldn't be a problem considering HDMI audio is just as good as optical.

While this is true, many people, like my self, have receivers and sound bars with optical being the only digital input.

There are solutions to this issue, but there is some cost involved, such as loss in functionality or money to purchase equipment.

I would imagine most people have electric wall sockets somewhere near their TV sets, into which they could plug a USB charger. It's just a guess, but I suspect it is very common to have electricity wired into TV rooms. No need to plug-in in the kitchen in those cases. I'm inferring from your post you may have electricity only in your kitchen and not anywhere near your TV, but I suspect you are in the minority. It also sounds as though finding a usb power adapter is tough where you live, which makes sense if you are in a geographical area where people sometimes don't have power in their TV rooms.

haha yeah ok nice post but not what I meant.
Yes there are power sockets in every room, and most likely close to your tv, even in my house. What I meant was that many people still prefer to have one location where they charge their phone. Now what if they only have 1 iPhone or smartphone and therefore only 1 USB power adapter. It would be annoying to have to go get it just to charge the remote, or as I said you would then put the remote where the charger is. I personally have chargers everywhere so I dont really care but most people wont.
All I am going on about is that they seem to give you a cable, but no power adapter, that would only really make sense if they would give you a usb port on the Apple TV for charging. Its logical and would have been quite convenient for many of the customers buying them.
I think its an extra hassle for people to have to go and find / buy an extra usb power adapter when it should really come with the apple tv if they dont have a port on the back.

Call me picky.
But knowing Apple's attention to the most minute aspect of every detail....

Why is the whole device Black, and the Remote Black, and yet, they supply a white cable?

Phew. I had to read through all the comments to see if anyone else commented or replied to this.

White cable is easy. Manufacturing costs. Tim Cook is a master at supply chain cost efficiencies. All Apple Lightning cables are white. Just as all headphones are white and most every other cable is white or light grey. I think the only reason the power cable on the AppleTV is black is because so much in TV cabling is black.

Now, if they made the cable black, then folks with a black iPhone iPod or iPad, etc would want black cables. Then those with gold or silver would want that color option. White all over is for consistency with that cable. Now it also helps a casual person know that it will work with all other equipment that is lightning. They see that cable and know it will work with any other lightning cable system they already have.

Now, I see your point. And it looks odd. But that's probably why they did it. For them to not have any other color option and making it cheaper to make.

Who cares if they want to sell you an HDMI cable. The joke is if anyone is stupid enough to pay for one when you can get one at Walmart for under $10. Even cheaper at Monoprice.

I would pay more for better quality HDMI cable. I had enough for those cheaply made rigid bad quality cables. Apple HDMI is more expensive but it saves me a ton not replacing them ne every few months.

I have purchased many HMDI cables over the years. None were over $30, but many were very cheap, like $5.

I have never had any of them go bad. I am not putting down anyone that wants to buy their self a high quality cable, but I just wanted people to know that just because the HDMI cable was $5, doesn't mean that it is crap.

Although I have tried a few $5 lightning cables, and the ones I have tried ended up being thrown away because they did not work.

Sounds like another crippled product then. Why doesn't it at least have an A8X? Apple are usually pretty good at putting future technology like ports and latest wireless standards into their products. The lack of ports and 4K support just means this is already due an update.

The remote looks great, but universal remotes will have a tough time emulating its functionality.

That's always going to be the case with some technology or another. Until every manufacturer agrees to have every electronic device "talk" one language over one protocol... and even if they do, someone will come along and release something that doesn't. It's not the end of the world.
