Yeah but that extra memory needed for the higher resolution display is hardly anything, just a few Megabytes:

3 Megapixels x 24-bit color / 8 bits = 9 Megabytes.
or hopefully:
3 Megapixels x 36-bit color / 8 bits = 12 Megabytes.

Now, lets exaggerate and multiply it by 10 times for buffering: 120 Megabytes at most.

There's till plenty of RAM, at least 768MB free for apps, if we assume iOS takes 128MB.
What we know is that any graphics updated to support the retina display on the iPad 3 will require four times the amount of RAM.

1024x768 x4 = 3MB
2048x1536 x4 = 12MB

Graphics in games are going to take up a fair amount of memory, 1GB will be enough though.

Regarding RAM

For me the most important feature of the 1GB RAM is better buffering of web pages. I hated my iPad 1 each time it reloaded pages I just returned to (especially on forums).

The image on the 3 is also backwards when compared to the 2.

I thought that too at first but if you look again the iPad 2 box is upside down - the clue is in the volume buttons...

The image on the iPad screen - what you can see of it - is slightly different between the iPad 2 and "new iPad", seeming to reflect the new default wallpaper, but that looks to be about it and isn't that easy to spot at a casual glance.

Same clock speed and 1GB of RAM. I like the RAM, but I was hoping for a small boost in CPU speed as well. Looks like I will upgrade to the 4th generation iPad when it comes out (and sell my 3rd Gen iPad next Feb).

I generally like to keep phones and iPads for 2 years.

You do not know how graphics programming works; it's more than just a screen buffer. I'm working on a game, has 64MB of textures in memory at one point (and that includes a number of textures that are compressed to take up less memory, storing 4-bits per pixel instead of 32 or 16). On the iPad 3, we'd need 256MB for the same screen-space. That's a huge jump, and that's just currently-loaded graphics. Now imagine you preloaded the next level so you could have a neat transition effect between the two levels (instead of fading the entire screen to black, loading the next level, and fading back), now you need 512MB of Ram instead of 128, just for graphics.

Sure, apps aren't going to need quite 4 times the Ram, but most apps will want more than double what they use on iPad 2, and when added to the fact that the GPU is only twice as fast for 4 times the pixels, you're going to see performance drops on the new machine if developers take full advantage of that screen.

The translation - courtsy of google....

This weekend the new Apple iPad start communicating 3rd generation machine to the user but now I have this product on hand thanks to the help of brothers in www.muabaniphone.vn . IPad 3rd generation has pretty much improved features compared with the iPad 2 and appears common in Vietnam for $ 13.680 million from the 7th week. A special feature of the new iPad is that you will not care to version operators in Vietnam because your AT & T and Verizon have 3G of us. feeling held iPad 3rd generation is great, machine is very solid as the iPad 2 but is somewhat heavier and thicker than a bit. Really do not know if it's difficult for you to feel very small changes. Biggest difference is the design on the back of your camera slightly larger than the iPad 2 due to large sensor and lens structure also changed. In general, third-generation iPad would make those who want a radical change in design is unsatisfactory but it is still very beautiful at this time. Not much difference in design, you will distinguish iPad 3rd generation with iPad 2 due to the high resolution 4 times iPad 2, to 2048x1536 pixels, that is, always has 3.1 million pixels displayed on your iPad with 1 at. High resolution than Full HD 1920x1080 screen makes images on iPad 2012 really smooth. In the past, users have phones like the iPhone screen definition 4/4S often feel uncomfortable when looking at the screen iPad 2 because it is quite clear, that feeling has disappeared on the new iPad. than the change in screen, iPad 2012 will also be upgraded to A5X processor chips from the previous A5. The chip is a prerequisite for iPad smoother operation in 2012 because it has up to 4 graphics cores which Apple is stronger than the nVidia Tegra chip 3. Tinhte.vn iPad will continue testing in 2012 and referred to in the article.

Yes you are right. The minimum is four times the pixels because you just cannot put for example 3x pixels because the pixels are grouped 2x2 you know? You cannot put them 1x2 instead of 2x2 , the aspect ratio would go just wrong.

My english is not so clear today. Maybe my point is not understood.

More pixels draw more power from battery. That is not what we need today.
CPU's are powerful enough on MacbookPro's and Air's we could use some low-temp machines now with at least 12hrs Wifi with one charge?

That is true if you're halving the size of the pixels, but on a laptop, that isn't necessary, OSX doesn't need to have a pixel doubled display, they could simply reduce the size of each pixel by 1/3 and add extra ones

The box is 16GB but the iPad is 32GB.
The screen that shows 32GB is an iPad 2, the new iPad was still in the box at that point.

Engadget now running with the Ram & CPU speed story

"Not only did some lucky gents in Vietnam get their hands on the new iPad while most people are still refreshing their delivery status page, they were also kind enough to run some benchmark tests. The results confirm that the RAM has been upped to 1GB, with the Geekbench score settling at 756. The processor remains at 1GHz, again, which is what we expected, but puts the kibosh on any speculation that there might have been a slight bump in clock speeds. If you want to see the full breakdown, hit the source for the goods."

Just wondering... Between the iPad 2 box and new iPad box, are the two iPads facing in directions, too (besides different home screen backgrounds)?

The iPad 2 box was not marked with the iCloud symbol. The box in the video clearly has the iCloud symbol on the side. That should help distinguish it from an iPad 2 box.

I hope there is no screen/light-bleed issues like with the iPad 2, any reports of yay/nay?

I hope they wont put "retina" displays on the MacbookPro line because it is just nonsense. You cannot see the pixels on 15" @ 1440x960 either.

Uh ? the 11" MBA is the highest PPI screen on a Mac laptop, and it's only 135 PPI... I can definately see the pixels at normal viewing distance.

Though I agree "Retina" is dumb on a laptop. Give me more real-estate, not more sharpness.

Looking at the warranty expiration date, I assume they got the ipad 3 on March 7th(last week)???? I might be wrong.

Serial Number: DLXH24J7DVGK

Hoping for this too; I skipped iPad 2 (and in hindsight, glad I did so) primarily for this reason. Too early to tell if it remains an issue on iPad 3, obviously, since the official launch isn't till Friday. Unless these Vietnamese guys are kind enough to test.

but keep hot powerhouses like the 15" pro for power users as well !

"Power user" is not a term that defines a user that needs "power houses". It defines a user that is very knowledgeable of the system he is using and uses the many advanced functionalities it provides. OS X being Unix, a lot of OS X power users don't require more than a 11 MBA.

Just another iPad in my opinion.
What is so amazing about it anyway except the spec bump..? LTE being the only real spec to look in the updated model.

avalanche of down votes coming up...

Wow... I just love the way Apple boxes their products. I always keep the box because it's so nice and if I sell the product again it's good to have the original packaging.

Yes, I'm aware of that. My point is though, everything is going to quadruple in size -- particularly graphics in games.
