One of the best fish and chip shops near me got taken over recently, it's now the worst I've ever been too! :(

It's gone from lovely golden brown chips and fantastic thick moist fish to pale yellow, just cooked chips and small thin dry fish.

I now have to drive 15 minutes to the next closest good F&C shop.

You see? I've said it before... always freshly-cooked on the spot. Best greasies in the world. English (well London) fish and chips pale by comparison... not that I'm biased or anything.

You're right, English F+C in general (I say in general because sometimes you find people with a passion for it) are pretty 'cack'.

I had fish & chips last week from the chippy down the street, they were fantastic!! Large cod & chips + 2 battered saussages = one very full guy.

there are so many chippy's here it doesn't matter if most are cack, your never more than 15 mins away from a decent one!

The best chippy I have been to is on Anglesea in Wales :) it's only a 2hr drive up the M56 :)

I have tried Fish & Chips abroad but its just not the same...

hmmm i may have chippy tea tonight... Fish, Chips, Mushy Peas & Gravy ...yummy!!!

Fresh was definitely the difference... Got to say though, that place over in the West End was pretty killer...

Try the Sea Cow in Dulwich and Clapham. You can have whatever fresh fish they've got in from Bilingsgate Market that day, battered or grilled.

In other news, female Kiwis can indeed be quite chippy :p

haven't found decent F&C in the states yet. in fact, nothing even remotely close. it's an abominatiuon.

Don't try the F&C at Red Lobster. How a seafood place could screw up something that simple I don't know.

There used to be a chain in the US devoted to Fish and Chips. Arthur Treachers. Hmm Google seems to think they are still around.

Closest one to you it says is at

Arthur Treacher's 2205 Bel Pre Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20748
Tel No. 301-733-5700

hmm One in Alexandria and another in fairfax.

http://www.arthurtreachers.com/locations.htm

iirc they aren't too bad.

Don't try anything at Red Lobster. That ranks as one of the worst chains in the world in my book. Friendly's, Applebees, and Red Lobster..... blech.

God, Applebees - how they have lines at their door is beyond me. Them and Ruby Tuesday...oh, and Fridays...

arthur treacher's is terrible. and it's very easy to mess up F+C, here in the US anyway. i've not had any decent F+C except at the "Park Slope Chip Shop" and "A Salt and Battery" in Brooklyn and Manhattan respectively.

i went to an arthur treacher's when i first moved to the States, and the fish was breaded

if that's what Americans think F+C is....never. i'm not surprised. more often than not, F+C is Fish and Fried here. never had decent/proper chips...steak fries are the closest.

best F+C i've had outside of NYC (and in the US) was actually in Las Vegas, in an Irish Pub at GVR.

That's because you're too far south. You need to come up north, to Ye Olde Fish & Chips in Woonsocket, RI. Only open Thurs-Fri. :D

See, I's a Southerner, and I'd-a-be spontaneeeously combustin' if'n I went up to the Yankeeland just for some vittles... ;)
(I'm educated I swear)

Catfish and hush puppies will suffice as a substitute until the GF and I can make our way back over to the Island of the Mighty, at which point we're stopping at the first shop I see, and I won't be caring much whether or not she likes fish ;)

The best F&C I've ever had was from a small van on the side of the road in Scotland. They used haddock and it was fabulous!

Here in the US, the best F&C is usually found in Irish bars. Go figure....

Fish and chips is ok in Australia, especially the ones made from shark. ;) So cheap, and so good.

Ahhh, but you guys have chicken salt, which makes up for just about everything. If everyone in the universe had chicken salt on their chips, there would be instant world peace and happiness.

Chicken salt is good, but it's not really necessary if the fish and chips are good - plain old salt does the trick for me.

I love F&Cs, but I don't eat them that often because after eating them, I swear I can feel the excess oil seeping through the pores on my face.

Shark (aka Flake) is OK, yeah it's cheap and it's pretty good for what it is.

I've had some great F&C from places near the beach in Melbourne where you can choose what fish you want, that was pretty cool.

Best F&C outside of those ones in St Kilda was actually in the Snowy Mountains of all places. Barramundi. Oh god I love barra, such a nice fish and totally over the top for fish and chips but what the hell, it was gorgeous.

Take it back!!

I wub Fridays :(

That's the only place I know of that I can get double-stack quesadillas or blackened chicken alfredo with my favorite local beer, Oberon.

(That, and the most amazing story happened there....but I can't explain it. Basically...a tomato was flung, unaimed, from a fork, and miraculously landed on my fork (stuck right through) as I was talking and not even looking at it.)

I think I may be the only Aussie who can't stand chicken salt. I once had to refuse a whole order of fish and chips because the lady serving me just piled on the chicken salt without even asking me.

Awful, disgusting, MSG-loaded, crappy gross chicken salt, I hate it!!

Yeah, it can certainly be gross in large amounts. It's one of the reasons I don't like KFCs chips, they over do it. The place we usually get ours from just uses normal salt.

Other than flake, I really like whiting or if I'm trying to be a little bit healthy I'll get grilled butterfish. My other favourite thing is battered scallops.

Are you talking about these?

They were a development of a company where I used to work, Henny Penny, which made restaurant equipment.

The wedges are washed and then breaded and of course, the breading has lots of sodium, partly to soak up the water and to keep the outside crispy.
