Still no dedicated Home app on the Home hub device.

I still don't get this. As someone who connects the homepod to the Apple TV, it seems like having a Home App would be necessary. I also wish Apple TV would have it's own browser, and maybe a last.fm app to incorporate my Apple Music with. I know they don't want to do more stuff with Android, but as a streamer box, Apple has to know that people who have Android phones probably also have Apple TVs.

Apple TV can be so much more and I feel like Apple neglects it.

What tvOS actually needs:
- Proper user support and parental controls to keep kids away from inappropriate content
- Netflix integration into Watch Next
- A live TV interface with global partners

Per a talk in the developers conference, support for HDR images should be in tvOS 18 at some point.

I just tried an HDR image now and it doesn't appear HDR so it might be a while yet, or the formats they actually support right now are not the ones I tried.

The last time I looked at Apple TV I didn’t think it supported Amazon Prime, Netflix, PBS Passport, and Plex in 4k. Does it do that now? I just got Roku Ultra after the cheapo Roku quit doing Plex playback correctly. $75 without issue. And super fast. Nice simple remote. What does Apple TV do that Roku doesn’t with my simple needs?

Sounds like you haven’t looked at Apple TV in like 7 years. Many of those apps had 4k when the Apple TV 4K launched in 2017 especially Netflix.

Would be great if they could fix that issue where I have to redo the wireless sync every time I want to watch a movie on my TV speakers and HomePods. It's been out of sync since at least tvOS 15 or something

Apple can literally “KILL” the competition if they allow bitstream HD audio like DTS-HD and ATMOS. Ahh well. I will give my money to somebody else.
What am I missing? I have it set for passthrough and I see the Atmos indicator come up all the time?

The only one I care about is dialog enhance. I might actually be able to watch and understand a Christopher Nolan movie now.
Not unless Apple Intelligence can send an avatar back in time to the set to shout "Oi! Nolan! NO!!! Just because everybody on the set already knows the script backwards doesn't mean that your audience does! Tell your actors to stop mumbling, and, while your at it, stop sending your sound engineer out to get you coffee - they're as important as the camera guys!"

Unless, maybe, Siri could grab the subtitles and read them out aloud? Hmm. I should patent that :)

Meanwhile - if we're doomed to a future where (a) we all need to enable the "subtitles for people with perfectly adequate hearing but who just can't interpret 'mumble mumble whisper garble sob'" and (b) even shows made for widescreen TV leave back top/bottom bars on your widescreen TV - can we have an update that always displays the subtitles on the black bar? Filtering out subs like "[sesquipedalian ocarina music plays]" would be nice, too...

Netflix only support 4k on their premium subscriptions. (Not Apple's fault, of course).

  1. Enhance Dialogue and Subtitles - As a bonus, Apple is also improving subtitles, so they'll appear intelligently such as when content is muted or when a TV show or movie is rewound.

What does ‘appear intelligently’ mean?
What does ‘movie is rewound‘ mean?
How are those a bonus to the other changes?

Missed the info, do these special features work with the HD Apple TV or does it have to be the 4K one? We have not upgraded to the 4K because we have a 1080 P TV which has 3-D. Personally I have been a fan of 3-D and I don’t want to upgrade to a TV that doesn’t have it. so we have just kept the HD Apple TV, which still works.

I'm confused by the projector support - I thought the native aspect ratio of HD and 4K was 16:9 so a wider ratio just has black bars top and bottom. This certainly fills my screen from side to side. Not sure I understand how an 18:9 ratio would display films better.
Many films are wider than 16:9, so movie buffs might have a wider projector or put an anamorphic projection lens on.

It’s designed to use either your tv speakers or HomePods not both together
