Wow, wouldn't it just really suck if Steve came out on stage at the Expo and said...

"Well, there were some new things we were planning on showing you but somebody spoiled the surprise, so we're going to wait a few months..."

I don't know if people would be more angry at ThinkSecret or Steve.

The only good side of such an announcement is production ramp up so, less short supply and shipping times when the products DO come out.

If that happen
That would be so bad and ruin the whole show, anyway give us ur products steve :p

Indeed. And they could also tie that theme with something like this:
"... but THIS will surely keep them saying that - introducing: the PowerBook G5!". The crowd goes wild, the PowerBook gets too hot and starts a fire, hundreds die.

Oups, my mind drifted a bit there. I shouldn't post at 02:24.

LOL- For some reason that made me see a startlingly clear image of Steve laughing maniacally on the stage, watching the fire and rubbing his hands with glee. And it's only 5:30 in the evening here!

As for the name of the flashPod, what would be its main selling point? The iPod photo is so named because it can display photos - iPod mini is small. I don't think they'll go for another word for "small" - too much confusion. I can't think of what the main focus of a smaller iPod would be. Maybe iPod sport? iPod go?

I don't like either. Any suggestions? The only thing I know for sure is since the iPod Photo was renamed "iPod photo" it will be all lowercase!

Conspiracy Theory:

Maybe the flash rumor is wrong, and TS purposely put this fake article out so they could claim they have no real inside secrets and no names to share. They just get this stuff sent to them via the anonymous mail link.

[/Takes_Off_Tin_Foil_Hat]

Of course, I don't really believe this, but the thought did occur to me.

My bet is they have lawyers giving them bad advice, or they wanted to send a big FYou to Apple. Probably both.

i'll be quite disappointed if the go for the 1 & 2GB sizes. I want an iPod I can afford. At those prices it creates a dilemma of whether to fork out the extra for a mini.

I think they really have to position these in the lower end of the market.

Considering there are two types of buyers for these:
1) Those who can't afford a HDD model
2) People working out.

I'm in the first category and want to get an iPod for as cheap as I can.

And those in the second category only need an hour or so of music at a time. What's that equal to? Less than 100mb?

512Mb and 1Gb would be much more sensible. But even a 256Mb would suffice.

Personally, I'd like to see the flash iPod replace the iPod mini - to ditch the little HD and go all flash. I see enough minis at the gym right now. Use 2 of these 2GB chips or something. I'm dreaming aren't I?

Apple's iPod line is getting a little too diverse. Consumers will start to get confused:

iPod flash 1GB
iPod flash 2GB

iPod mini 4GB

iPod 20GB
iPod 40GB

iPod photo 40GB
iPod photo 60GB
---
I beg to differ. The way you have it listed is confusing. Basically they have 4 models: A flash based one, a mini one, a regular one and a photo one. To me, these seem like 4 different market segments.

Here would be the lineup:
- iPod flash (1 & 2 GB sizes)
- iPod mini (4GB size)
- iPod (20 & 40 GB sizes)
- iPod photo (40 & 60 GB sizes)

As time goes on, the capacities will increase but the model types remain the same. Simple.

I really like the idea of a flash iPod. I think the 1GB and 2GB are appropriate sizes, especially if Apple boosts the size of the mini to 8 or 10 gigs. That'd really span the entire market!

I believe the flash-based iPod will be a member of the iPod mini line. So it will be sold as the iPod mini 1GB. Apple does not use technology to designate its products, to iPod flash is very unlikely.

Flash...savior of the universe, king of the impossible!

I guess if you're going to be sued its better to go down kicking and screaming! However, I thought the legal action brought against think secret was to force them to give info about their source rather than an actual lawsuit. Has this changed this time are they actually beening sued or just asked to give info? Still it seems that if this rumor is true apple is actually concerned about market share for once and making all the right moves!

$149 for iPod 1 Gig flash ram. That seems very cheap... considering its Apple. But Hey, if they can pull it off the price is great.

Apple will have a iPod in all market spots - cheap, medium and high end. iPod domination.

I guess thinksecret wants to go out in a blaze of glory. Not even lawsuits stop them.

Well, if their defense is going to be that they are provided with information freely, there's no reason to stop reporting the rumors they get, is there? After all, it is not illegal for TS or anyone else NOT under an NDA to openly discuss information they are given.

Rock on Think Secret people!!

As for the iPod mini/flash, WOO-HOO! I've got a good feeling that MWSF is going to be wild!

Apple iPod vs. HP iPod. When HP first came out with the iPod I was going to get one. The store I went to had them for about $30 less then the Apple iPod.

The only problem - the bow never mentions that it is Mac compatable. The box is 100% PC information. Event the system requiremets on the box never mention any Mac hardware.

Just to be sure it would work I asked a sales person and was told that it was PC only.

I know know this to be wrong, but I can see how your friend got confused.

.......and "headless eMac for 499$US"......
Go Apple!

Do you think its going to be branded as an eMac or an iMac? I was kinda hoping they'd go for iMac mini or somethign like that so appeal to the iPod crowd, and to offer it in different annodized colours ala' iPod mini...

one can hope at least :)

and how long do u think it will take for the new "flash ipod to ship" ....
Even better why pay $150 for 1 gig when for another $100 i could get 4 Gigs.. (as of now)
For 1 gig i can get about 250 songs at $150 where as the mini i could get about 1,000 for 100 bucks more... gig for gig... the mini seems logical...(as of now)
I think the pricing is to high/wrong maybe for $100 dollars for the 1 Gb and 150 for the 2gb.(but then again apple products are expensive)

Huh? Remember when iPod mini came out? Lots of people were bashing it because it was relatively expensive when looking at the HD size. You have to see the flashPod won't be for exactly the same purpose as iPod mini. Selling a kick ass 1gb player for $99 would be a rip-off.

The new iPod will reportedly come in 1GB and 2GB versions according to the rumor site based on Samsung 1GB flash modules and will start at $149.
This is aweseme. Especially when you consider the price points if these are correct.

That's cheap!

Look at JetAudio and the G2 or G3 1GB players. Both quality players. They are priced at $249.

If this rumor is true, Apple is going to change the flash player market.

Hey - you might be on to something there. Last time the iMacs came in colours, people bought accessories to go with them - why not make the headless iMac an accessory to go with your iPod mini? This might make them that much more of a must-have item.

If they *do* start selling colouriffic computers again, I wonder if a black G5 PowerBook might one day appear. I'm rather attached to my Pismo, see...

i still think 1gb is too much..

i'd much rather have an even cheaper 256mb one..

*awaits shouts of "crazy man!"* :D

Even if Apple offered $49 flash iPods people would still complain that they are too expensive and wonder why they aren't include free with your Fruit Loops or Happy Meal.

Okay... "CRAZY MAN!" ;)

1GB is great!

I already have a 256MB flash player. Purchased it about 2 years ago. It was the biggest at the time. Works fine, but 256MB is way too small.

I look at capacity a bit different. I think in terms of time.

At the rate I encode my songs into MP3 files it takes about 2MB per minute.

So a 256 player would hold only 128 minutes or about 2 hours of music.

Where as a 1GB player would hold close to 8.5 hours.

That's enough for using for using the same device for commuting and exercising. Especially with the iPod/iTunes syncing and ease of changing playlists.

Good stuff.

I think they should get rid of the iPod and reduce the price of the iPod photo; it will continue to be the high end model. The iPod mini should get a bigger hard drive and become the mid-level model. The iPod flash can be the low-end model.

i think apple starting to diversify its price range is really perfect... broaden their base. it won't be confusing because
1. they will be guided by the fanatics at the appleStores, some at partner retailers and dealers
2. they have a broad range depending on customers price/mood/desire
3. they have a broader *available* range because not all versions of those iPods will be in stock

they have taken the iPod and now covered a nice chunky demographic while maintaining profit margins.... :D

as i recall apple kept knowledge of the ipod to a very small group of people (something absurd like 100). i imagine they would continue under that mode of operation still. i can think of three possibilities for the TS leak.

1) it's a fairly high level manager/exec. this doesn't seem to make much sense though. as pointed out the upside compared to the potential downside is far too great. a manager/exec at the level to know about hardware, software and ipod info is way up there. they wouldn't risk the salary and legal repercussions.

2) it's several low level apple employees. perhaps working as a team to not only gather multiple bits of information, but also to make it harder to track down the leak.

3) it's someone at their advertising agency or printer or some other similar third party. some design or production lackey, maybe just out of school, but young and quite giddy with the power/excitement of getting to see these new products and feels the need to tell someone. either doesn't realize or care about their job/legal ramifications. has no real ties to apple other than they're a client of the company they work for.

my money is on number 3.

;) unbeknownst to many, steve job's super intelligent pet chimp, iBubbles, is on ThinkSecret's payroll.
