How can they do it for under $200?

Easily!

They could probably even afford to put some sort of minimalist screen on it if they ship it with say 128MB of memory built in and an open SD card-slot for you to slap all those extra 256MB and 512MB cards you have sitting around that aren't being used by your PDA and Digicam in the thing.

You want a 4GB flash iPod? Great. Go out and buy a 4GB card and stick it in.
Have to share it with the wife and she doesn't like your taste in music?
No prob. Pull your card out and she can stick hers in.

Seems to be the simplest solution to me.

You know, looking at the size of the ipod flash mockup in
this pic I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see it take a form factor similar to that. It's tiny (see the coin pocket on the pair of jeans) and it keeps the whole ipod family resemblance going so people will still be able to automatically recognize the fact that you have an ipod and not a rio or whatever. Is a 1" screen usable though? I guess we'll have to wait and see...

ok, that link didn't work, so here's the pic below. sorry.

Looking at the other pictures at applele.com, it looks like the screen is the same size as the current iPod mini. The difference between the mini and the flash mockup is that the empty space is removed from the bottom and above the click wheel. The mockup is also thinner.

Frankly, I think it's the best design I've seen among several flash mockups. As Stewdy mentioned, it definitely retains the distinctive iPod look and it should be usable as well. It might benefit from a little more space below the screen just so your fingers don't obscure the screen while using the wheel.

I'd love to see something like this from Apple and would definitely buy it as a workout/activity iPod.

so i've been sitting here thinking about the above pic. first of all, the more i look at it, the more i realize how much i like this design more than anything else i've seen postulated. quite simply, it is an ipod. anyway... how cool would this be? the scene is the stage at the keynote. steve has just introduced the plethora of rumored products at macworld but reached what appears to be the end of his keynote without debuting a flash ipod. the crowd is pumped about all they've seen and are so awed they don't really realize that the flash is missing. suddenly as is appears he is going to walk away he says "oh yeah... one more thing." and pulls this ipod flash out of the coin pocket on his jeans! if i were giving the keynote that's the way i'd do it. :)

Another take

Don't know if this has been posted before but i really don't have time to look thru 8 pages of discussions...

OIKOS.com.tw (mandarin) has posted an article about a potential form factor for the ipod flash, called "ipod baby". It's basically an ipod click wheel without the body. The top of the wheel has a flat white bit added on it, and on the edge of that flat bit is what seems to be a one-line screen, with a cut-down version of the ipod os UI on it.

It has been noted by the moderator of the news site that the ipod baby may be fake, but yea... you never know!

Unless I'm missing something... how do you actually see what you're playing?!

[EDIT: Sorry, I should read better!!]

But I like it :)

Do you think there's any chance that there will be a price drop in the 20 or 40GB models within the next 2-3 months?

Availability?

So if all goes according to plan and these Flash ipods are announced today, when should they be expected in stores? I know apple tries to have a stock of their products ready soon after they are announced, but does anyone have any guesses? Thanks!
