Yes, I'm that one person that didn't know about this; but, now that I do, I'll be a bit more helpful on the road. Although I don't speed, I'll help out!

I'm just waiting for someone in law enforcement to come and rain on this parade.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I was driving to work on a busy two-lane highway, speed limit 55. It is a very straight road, and most other people completely ignore the limit. I was doing 65-70, as usual, when an oncoming driver flashed his lights. I figured the same cop that got me a couple of years ago is sitting there, so I slow it down to around 50. Immediately over the next hill are two tour buses parked halfway on the road while the tourists take pictures of horses! That guy may have saved a few lives.

What the hell are you guys thinking?!? Speeding kills!!! How could you blatantly disregard safety, throw caution to the wind and say "To hell with the law!"?!? You're all going to hell!!!

kidding...kidding...
I do it all the time, and have been saved by it as well. Thank God for nice people!:D

Dad's a lawyer, gets me out of them, I pay them off, I go to traffic school (4 times  ) and contest each one. Still, an expensive habit :(

it's wonderful that you have the resources to keep your liscense after 12 speeding tickets in 4 years. usually liscences are revoked and morons who drive like that aren't allowed to keep endangering the lives of other citizens.

we do this in the UK

I have been flashed a few times by oncoming drivers - since then I've been flashing people when I notice the police sitting on the side of the road.

well worth doing all over I guess. It does make me think abou the 50 or 55MPH limit you guys have in the States, if the vast majority of you lot dont follow it - why do you get your politicians to change it?!

I flash my headlights. I find that when someone flashes their headlights at me, it's mostly men, I think. I always look over to see and wave even if they probably won't see it.

I wish girls would flash me. :(

[/double entendre]

personally, i won't do it. i'll flash my lights to warn of danger, but not for speeding.

if you are all too dumb to be caught by a cop then you deserve the consequences. i see way way way too many stupid drivers on the roads as it is, we don't need any more thank you.

i'm not saying i don't speed, i'm just saying look out for yourself, especially you people in your beemers and mercs etc who think you're the best driver in the world, completely oblivious to everything around you.

i recently got my very first speeding ticket a couple of weeks ago, and i drive fast everywhere, but i still consider myself a much safer/better driver than the majority, for a number of reasons too. not a bad return on 13 years of driving, the first half of which was spent street-racing (in England, with corners, none of this crappy drag racing you guys do here in the States, somethng where the driver rules, not just the car).

anyway, i'm sure i've made no friends in this thread, but think about it. a lot of places we do need the speed limits, especially as people are so piss poor at driving that they pull out in front of you. drive fast, if you're capable (most are NOT) and where it's safe to do so, and keep your eyes open for the cops, if they can see you, then you can also see them. learn to drive whilst looking at the road ahead, not 50 feet in front of you.

and for you, with the 12 tickets and the lawyer for a Dad, you are very very sad (read dangerous) and i hope you eventually do lose your licence.

Well yeah someplace the speed limit really should be enforced... what Im really talking about though is on an interstate highway (especially those in the midwest) because they are very flat, with hardly any turns at all. And its just so annoying when you are going with traffic, everyone is driving fine, but traffic is about 10 mph over the limit, and you finally get a turn or a hill, and there are 3 cops sitting there, and they pull out behind everyone. Thats where its annoying. And thats where it would be nice to have some help.

I agree though, that yeah some places there should be cops that actually get to pull people over. Like, on the road near my apartment where past 11:30 PM you can hear street racers with their tricked out honda civics doing well over 100 mph on the normal city streets near me. Thats where cops need to be, and thats where I wouldnt warn anyone. And if I was on the interstate and saw someone going the opposite direction doing some crazy excessive speeding, yeah I might not warn either, what this is really about is, if you are doing 5 over, and theres a cop, its a pain in the a*s when you get pulled over.

i hear ya, and yeah, i've no problem with that really, i've never encountered those long straight roads yet, so i can only imagine how frustrating it can be when you should be able to do 80+ with no problems.

yikes! didn't mean to come off so irresponsible, but to be honest, 3 of them were not legit at all, I didn't deserve them. 3 of them were, and I paid, and went to traffic school, and the others were not for going 20 or 30 over the limit, more like 60 in a 55 freeway that used to be 65. So, before implying that I'm a moron, maybe think a bit more.

I know it seems like its over the top, but it isn't. And my dad just goes to my court date with me, one of the priviledges of being a lawyer is you don't have to wait in the 2 hour line to be heard by a judge so that's why he goes.

Humm, guess I'll disagree.

Speeding increases the likelihood of an accident. Speeding is less fuel efficient.

As a father with two children I want speeders to get caught. Every time my wife drives our kids to see their cousins 40 miles away and comes back in the wee hours of the night, I worry.

Heck, my own wife speeds and I hope she gets a ticket. :)

My parents flash the lights, and its always good to be warned by others. I think the speeding system is ridiculous anyway. It think in Australia we have a 3 km/h limit to how far over you can go. Now come on, most cars speedo's are out by 5 or so. I like New Zealands idea. I think their limit is something like 8km.
Here in the US its like 5mph+-.
If you have big boobs its more like 15mph+-.

I bet your wives does her make-up while safely driving the kids to school..:p

I used to have a rather heavy right foot, I had some pretty good times in my old Mustang, some pretty fast times too. ;) ...but two speeding tickets were enough for me to just relax and go the speed limit. Of course I also sold the car and replaced it with a four cylinder, that helped too. :D

Now that I have a son my views on speeding have changed dramatically, I can't stand aggressive drivers anymore, and I used to be one! I say let the cops catch the speeders, since the speed limits are there not only for your safety, but for those around you as well.

Being responsible takes the fun out of everything.

I did think about it. And after thinking about it, i figured that it would take someone with below-average intelligence not to learn from their past experiences. All 12 experiences over the course of 4 months.

I totally disagree.

Unplanned pregnancy? STI?

And as my boyfriend just recently got a speeding ticket while I was a passenger, lemme tell ya', it's no fun even if you're not the one being issued a citation. :p

he actually said 4 years...

i generally warn people too, especially on the roads of nj where those state troopers hide out like bastards. most states they just hang out on the side the road. in nj they actually find little caves to hide. crazy
