That card is working in my 2008 quad core, as per my earlier posts.

marcelog4 and myself successfully used the atiflash DOS utility to write the custom BIOS' from http://netkas.org/

3,1 MP video card question

I'm new to this flashing business. (basically I have no clue how to do this) I clicked on the links that you posted but nothing made sense to me. Is there another site that you could point me to that gives a detailed explanation of how to flash this video card? or would it be better to buy the MAC version and not go through the hassle? I have an early 2008 MP 2.8 Octo-core.

Thanks for your help.

SUCCESS with 2008 MacPro (3,1)

XFX5870_1.rom from http://netkas.org/?p=503 was flashed to SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X HD5870 1GB GDDR5 PCIE OC. Works in OS X after installing the Snow Leopard Graphics Update.

ATIFlash 3.79 was used with Special Disk For Bios Flashing inserted into Ultimate Boot CD

atiflash -fa -fm -fs -fp -p 0 xfx587~1.rom

I was experiencing error 0FL01 when I used ATIFlash 3.75.

Many, many thanks netakas and all.

If you've read through the thread and still don't understand how flashing works (which is perfectly o.k.), it would probably be best to wait until someone dumps the Mac 5000 series roms and Cindori updates his Zeus flashing tool or something.

In other words - if I were you, I'd wait until we get a streamlined and easy process down for the "general consumer."

Edit: looks like people are starting to receive the 5870 upgrade kits? Hopefully someone is kind enough to dump the rom to us...

There are issues where the 5870's are possibly not flashable. Could go either way. I would hold off buying hardware until this is all worked out, if you're planning on using the Apple ROM.

No 5870 upgrade kits have shipped. You can't even order them.

Thanks for your kind advice. :) I guess we've all waited a long time for this card so what's a little longer.

With the PC 5770's running ~$100 less than the Apple card, has anyone yet tried a flashed 5770 in a Mac Pro 1,1? (It seems that the Apple 5770 works in a 1,1.)

Does it look possible to flash a PC 5770 with a version of Apple's 5770 ROM?

Flashing PC cards hasn't worked yet. You can check on the progress on netkas' forums. The Rominator is on it but give it some time.

Just letting people know that I got a sapphire vapor-x 5870 working in my early 2008 mac pro. As far as I can tell it is quite happy in both OS X and windows. I installed the graphics updage first.

I used http://mirror.netkas.org/5700/m5870sap.rom.zip and ultimate boot cd with a fat32 partition. The only trouble that I had is that I couldn't get it to change boot partitions without using either OS X or windows so I had to card swap a couple times. I tried the hold down 'c' at boot trick but that didn't work.

Yep, I got my MacPro 1,1 EFI MP11.005C.B08 up and running on the new ROM.

No problems with 3D? If it runs everything exactly like the Apple version, no real reason to buy from Apple aside from the warranty.

Makes flashing a cheapo 5870 a very enticing option.

I haven't had any issues; the system has been up with the 5870 since yesterday afternoon without a reboot. I've run WoW, Steam, Second Life, Photoshop CS5 and watched some video so far. It's been perfect except for the lack of EFI boot screen before the OS X desktop.

Would like to join in

Hey all,

Been following this for a long long time. I too have a 2006 mac pro and used a 4890 for ages flashed. I now have a 5870 XFX and want to flash it. I'd love to help this effort and flash my card, report back any success issues. Would any of you help me understand how to flash it?

In case anyone's missed it:

It's been done..

Well 5870 has. 5770 should follow soon. No EFI screen on boot yet (i.e. no display until OS X desktop) but this is the EBC rom so will work on 2006 Mac Pros and above.

Is there any update on the status of the 5770? Since only the DVI port works in the 2006 on the Apple card, there's really no point buying it for my 1,1 MacPro.

My 8800 has died, so I really need something better than the 7300 for playing WoW. :)

I've been interested in this but wondering, all you people without boot screens, you don't bootcamp? Or you do, but you have to do it blind somehow?

I just use rEFIt. It's pretty easy to set it to boot Mac OS X by default, and to boot Windows I just hit the right arrow key and enter after the boot bong.

but i'm not sure how when you restart from windows you get to macos, as i think by selecting the windows disk in sys pref the first time, you've set that to be the boot drive.

someone else will chime in with the full answer ;)
I think the BootCamp software installed from the Mac system disks gives you a Startup Disk control panel in Windows.

I have a FLASHED 5770 in my 4,1 09 Mac Pro. My issue is it locks the system up if it goes to sleep? Has anyone had this issue and resolved it by chance?

I got the card already flashed by others, looks great, but freezes to where I have to press the power button to restart,

I am on OSX 10.6.8 UPDATE: I am now in Lion 10.7 and the problem persists to where I have pilled it and put my GT120 back in.....

Anyone comment on what may be wrong? Bad flash, bad card, bad Bios, etc, that makes a sleeping 09' mac pro need to reboot to get the video card to have a display output to the 30" ACD?

Thanks for any insight in advance.
