Damn is there ANY way I could get this app now? FML I read macrumors a lot just hadn't gone today for some reason.

I can't seem to get this to work on my Macbook Pro... do you guys just follow the video and it works? I have tried numerous times. Is the airport light supposed to be green or yellow?

Doesn't matter. Mine was yellow, his was green in the video. Worked fine for me, just followed step by step.

Pulled from the story already. When will developers like this grow up?

Well... perhaps we should allow the kid to hit puberty before we tell him to grow up.

What he did may be "wrong" but he's just a kid, and I'm sure this stunt will pay off for him in the long run. Damn clever kid if you ask me- he will probably go on to code some cool stuff in the future.

8) Select the "Alternate Configuration" tab and enter in an IP address of 13.37.13.38, Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0 and click OK. The address 13.37.13.37 should now be pingable from a command prompt.

following these instructions finally worked for me on Win 7. most importantly, using 13.37.13.38 for my static IP within advanced network config.

Does anyone still need the video? Not sure if its still private or whatever, but I have it saved if anyone wants it.

EDIT guess not loaded just fine for me now.

I really don't care what others think, this "kid" did a lot of iPhone owners a big service. I'd be shocked if he did use his real name or age, as nothing needs to be signed, notarized, validated, etc.

It wouldn't be too hard to create a completely fraudulent account.

This is exactly why Apple declines (what appears to be) a lot of apps from developers. People can't be trusted that they are creating legit apps that DO ONLY WHAT THEY SAY THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO DO, in terms of how the developer introduces it. :p

Yeah, don't blame it on Apple that they have Draconian policies and don't care what features people want and won't let anyone else add them either. No, it's not Apple's fault that they are rotten to the core. The developers made them act like rotten apples. It's the developers fault that Blu-Ray is a bag of hurt and it's the developers and the other cell phone carriers' fault that iPhone 4 has a bad antenna design. It's certainly not Apple's fault.

Subnet is supposed to be 255.255.255.0. Clear out all the settings and follow the instructions from scratch.

I finally got mine to work. I have Parallels and the Shared and Host-Only Adapters seem to be interfering with the app. I had to change both of their "Configure IPv4" to Off, then set the Subnet mask to 255.255.0.0. After that, it finally started working (make sure to use Safari for your browser).

Um wow.

Lets put it this way. If I don't like Wal Marts return policy, then I'll go buy my things from Target. Or if I don't like Big Macs, then I'll probably buy Whoppers.

Instead of doing that, people like you complain complain complain and troll troll troll. Its really quite incredible.

Works for me just me. Funny thing is that I get better download speed from my 3g than my home wifi. I have crappy wifi.
Now to switch back to wifi though it seems that I have to click off the SOCKS Proxy in settings. Is this correct or is there a way around it without switching it every time?

alright, I tried it again to the same thing. I even restarted my Macbook. Safari starts loading the page and stops and just says safari can not open this page....

You just followed the video and it worked for you? Do I need to do something to my router or anything?

Thanks.

I had the same problem and this helped me.

''This didn’t work out of the box for me after following the video, so if you’re not getting internet, see if your airport icon is green in the network settings. Mine was yellow, so I set an IP/Netmask to 13.37.13.36/24 and it works!"

Also try using Safari instead of FF

Hope this helps.

BTW the light needs to be green.

I was one of the lucky ones to grab Netshare when it was first introduced, so I didn't bother pulling the trigger. Glad that a new group of people can free themselves from (some of) AT&T's $20/month tethering plan, though.

Of course, a SOCKS proxy has its limitations, but it's certainly better than nothing.

Wrong. Android has had USB tethering built in before 2.2. It's the WiFi hotspot that's a new feature in 2.2.. which is not something iPhone is capable of, neither prior to nor with iOS 4.

Also wanted to add that I have a droid and you can tether via bluetooth DUN. It's free and I'm running 2.1. Used it last week to tether my MBP.
Just wish iPhone4 was jailbroken already. Miss MIWI.

What limitations does SOCKS Proxy have?

This is why data caps are a good thing for AT&T and Verizon. I had the tethering mod for my iPhone 3GS from Behn and never upgraded the OS. When Apple puts out OS upgrades, I'll wait to make sure they don't kill the functionality of this app. The only time I tether is a hotels or airports where you have to pay for internet, so I can stay under 2GB of data.

Ok, set the IP address AND subnetmask to 13.37.13.36 and on my mac do i change anything?

Thanks.

For your MacBook where you put the sever. Use 17.37.17.38

Yup... It hurts customers so much not finding the features they want that they buy far less apps on average from the App store than the Android market. And they also rate the iPhone lower in customer satisfaction. And it blocks developers so much that they typically make far more money selling Android apps.

Oh, wait.... it's the other way around. How can that be??? :D

Can you explain this? Does this mean to enter "13.37.13.36/24" (exactly as written) under the IP Address field on the iphone? And does that mean that I have to change the SOCKS Proxy server to "13.37.13.36/24" on my MBP as well? And if so does the ": 1337" remain the same? I'm really not an idiot people, I've followed direction exactly multiple times and still haven't gotten this to work. Thanks for the help and the patience

Yeah... I paid a buck ONCE to tether.

What're you paying?
20 or 30 a month?

I've seen this brought up a few times. The person who posted the screenshot of the Android 2.2 WiFi tethering option is likely using a Nexus One, as that's the only Android phone I'm aware of that 2.2 has been officially released on. Unofficially, Android 2.2 runs on a number of phones, mind you.

The Nexus One in the US is an unlocked phone in every sense of the word (carrier and (optionally) boot loader). Firmware updates, etc are managed by Google or by the user, and the carriers are in no way involved. That means that no, you don't have to pay for a tethering plan. The feature is just there, and it works. There's no tie-in to the carrier's billing or plan features.

Unfortunately, using a Nexus One on AT&T though is kind of like being raped twice since you have to buy the phone at full price ($529) and then pay AT&T's phone subsidy each month for your non-existent subsidized phone. On T-Mobile the situation is much better, as you get a $20/mo discount, equaling out to $480 over two years, if you're not receiving a phone subsidy. But, T-Mobile's coverage is worse in most areas, so it's a trade-off.
