They definently aimed to hit or miss with the retinas... Like the airs, the options are kinda set for u... I wanted to entry retina 15" but upping ram and CPU, only got the ram

If I wanted all out CPU, I'd have to bite for the next level which also brings a larger SSD, cooll, but don't need it..

None the less, give it to me now!

1. Wrong - it is replaceable, but you'll have to wait for OWC to release one.

3 years from now when Apple moved on to mSATA A4 and OWC stops stocking the current bastardised mSATA sticks, what are you gonna do when your disks wears out?

Apple's sticks are not compatible with the industry standard. I will save the answer to the "Why" for you to think about.

----------

RAM goes bad, your laptop is out of warranty, you're looking at a 400 dollar repair. Compared to 40 dollars with the regular MBP all because you can't handle an extra pound and want higher res.

The high res makes sense for the video final cut pro users though.

Just my 2 cents *shrug ...

What's the point of having a almost 3X 1080p display on a 15 inch screen with a mid range GPU?

Just blows my head thinking about it.

Buy a new Mac, or - since OS X supports booting off TB storage - go external. Is that a problem? Maybe for you it is. Me? I don't care.

Not like the ASUS Zenbook ones are compatible, either. The interface might be standard, but the physical connector used is not.

Photoshop, CAD, video editing...

p.s. it's not for gaming.

Yeah... you're going to need more than six benjamins for a MacBook Pro. May I suggest this Visa card?

there is no such thing as a perfect product. And there will always be people who complain about every single thing. smh.

subwoofers on laptop... hmmm, my friend has a high end with alienware with a sub. My cheap 2.0 altec lansing beats that. Point is, why want a sub in a computer when its pretty much useless.

1. No user upgradeable storage
256 standard, up to 768. No problem.

2. Ditto with RAM. This hurts man.
8 gigs standard, up to 16. Don't tell me you need 32 on a laptop.

3. small thing but ONLY ONE HEADPHONE INPUT. what happened to the headphone + microphone jacks like on the last one? I don't want to buy adapters and dongles
The laptop already has a mic. If you need better miss, you should know they come with usb connection.

4. only two usb ports? Pathetic
What's the problem? There are BT kb, mixes, trackpads. you probably will use a Thunderbolt Display or you can just buy a ****ing 10 bucks hub. Facepalm.

5. Also, only 720p camera? Come on this 2012. they probably will update to 1080p in the spec bump next year.
We are talking about FaceTime/Skype, so the camera is not the limiting factor.

6. $2800 for the high end 15 inch?!!? WTF. I thought the predictions of $3000 were laughable but I guess not.
2800 to expensive? Then buy a regular macbook. Or a <1000$ dell. If you can't afford a Mercedes, doesn't mean it's expensive.

7. Still only Stereo speakers. No subwoofer on the retina model either!
Are you stupid? Subwoofer on a laptop?

8. 1440 x 900 base resolution! WTF I need that extra screen space I get with 1650 x 1050!
Read the specs. The resolution is 2880 by 1800.

Nice trolling.

I guess you are right. When your SSDs are dead your batteries are probably gone too.

I'm not defending OP here. But I'm just going to say:

Are you stupid? Subwoofer on a laptop?

The old Pro actually had a built in sub. It's not a great sub, but it's there. Apple are saying the new Pro's speakers are clearer with better dynamic range and such so I don't imagine the speakers will be that bad though.

Read the specs. The resolution is 2880 by 1800.

Pixel doubling means you don't actually get that much screen space (not that you'd want to, elements would be miniscule at that size). On stock settings, you only get the same amount of space on the screen as a basic 1440x900 screen.

Still, OP's argument holds no water here because you can adjust the scaling to get the equivalent real estate of 1920x1200. (http://www.anandtech.com/show/5996/how-the-retina-display-macbook-pro-handles-scaling)

Nice trolling.

I don't think so, he's just misinformed :p

Can we say with absolute certainty that the SSD is non-user upgradable? Or is this just speculation being touted as fact? I'm not asking whether it is extremely likely that it isn't upgradeable, rather, has it been confirmed that it isn't?

They are upgradeable, provided you can find a supplier for these parts.

They are also more expensive than regular SSDs, and since they don't follow mSATA standards you will have a lot of trouble finding replacements for them.

If you *need* the space it is better to just CTO one and put down the $900 asking price for it.

Haha, you think SSDs are so expensive now?

I bought a 32GB (about 29GB usable) SSD about 4 years ago. SLC, 1.8" PATA-ZIF, extremely rare, $280.

I bought a 80GB (formatted to 64GB) SSD about two years ago. Intel X25-M G2. $250.

Now it's very possible to get 256GB SATA3 SSDs for under $200 shipped. That's okay, in a few years a 1TB SSD (which costs more than $2000 apiece now) will be the minimum 'recommended' size. I personally don't care.

lol, what's your point? a fool and his money are soon parted

1. No user upgradeable storage
2. Ditto with RAM. This hurts man.

>>It would be bad if it weren't so cheap. But Apple really made this one cheaper than usual, so I thought it's a good deal. You see, the Non-retina MBP is $1800, but only comes w/ 4GB of Ram, standard HD, and a regular LCD. Now, when you pay merely $400 more, you get an upgraded ram, SSD, and screen? That's cheaper than if you get these things on your own (upgrading MBP non-retina yourself). And guess what? The retina version is lighter. So at ends, I think the Ram and SSD they force u to use are of great value.

3. small thing but ONLY ONE HEADPHONE INPUT. what happened to the headphone + microphone jacks like on the last one? I don't want to buy adapters and dongles

this is actually better than two holes, because I can use VoIP call much easier w/ iPhone headset, instead of requiring two cords, or use the built-in mic which capture keystroke noise.

4. only two usb ports? Pathetic

It is 1 less than current, but you get one more TB....that's a nice tradeoff, considering both USB are 3.0

5. Also, only 720p camera? Come on this 2012. they probably will update to 1080p in the spec bump next year.

They are allowing facetime over Cellular. I don't think 1080p camera will play nicely w/ Cellular network, and most people's network can't handle true 1080p upload. Seriously, do you know the bandwidth required for that?

6. $2800 for the high end 15 inch?!!? WTF. I thought the predictions of $3000 were laughable but I guess not.

yeah that's kind of stupid, but again, where else can you buy a laptop w/ 740gb of SSD?

7. Still only Stereo speakers. No subwoofer on the retina model either!

Are you kidding me? Why don't you say that it doesn't have a 24 inch display?

8. 1440 x 900 base resolution! WTF I need that extra screen space I get with 1650 x 1050!

I actually agree with you on this one. I feel this is actually a downgrade from my current version of 1650x1080 matte display. I am also not sure what will the majority of website/app look like on 1440x900 upscaled screen? will everything look pixelated? that will sucks...

Now I want to add the BIGGEST PAIN i have: i have to wait freaking 2 weeks?!?! WTF?

Thank you! Don't get me wrong though, 256gb SSD space is plenty enough for me!

Just thought I'd make a thread about the things I specifically didn't like about this redesign. Overall I am loving it though.

I both love and am a little disappointed at the same time.

Feel free to add anything else.

I've been waiting for buying this for several months now but a few things make me hesitant.

The main one is the price. I was willing to spend about $2300- $2400 for a BTO decently upgraded MBP. But this very high starting price is obscene and with the soldered RAM, it's even more expensive(I need 16GB).

The second main one is the screen resolution. Retina's great but the screen space is just too small to do serious work. I was hoping for at least 1080p for base resolution.

There are other things as mentioned in the first list, but these two I just mentioned might be big deal-breakers. I would use this machine for hd video editing and compositing work. I also plan on trying some 3d modeling with it.

Do you guys think it's worth it, even with the big drawbacks?

Are you kidding me?

1. They said the same thing about the MBA and we all know where that ended up.
2. What in the fat dick do you need more than 8 or 16 GB of RAM for...?
3. If the quality of sound input/output is that important to you, then you'll realize that when it actually matters, you'll need external accessories for that anyway.
4. Two USB Ports is Plenty. If you don't agree, get a USB Hub.
5. Really, James Cameron? Are you going to record Avatar 2 with the FRONT-FACING WEBCAM on the MacBook Pro? What in the black do you need a 1080p web-cam for? The FaceTime HD 720P camera is more than able enough for its intended purpose. Despite all these other computer manufacturers giving their webcams an HD nomenclature, they use it more in terms of relativity to previous iterations of webcams than actual video quality capability. Most issues with web-cam video quality are because of bandwidth anyway.
6. If you didn't notice, they poured about 1100 dollars of upgraded, still new and expensive, hardware into this new line. For them to raise the price a mere 600 for the HIGH END MBPR is far beyond reasonable.
7. What the hell do you think this is HP + Beats? I'll repeat what I said in #3: If the quality of sound input/output is that important to you, then you'll realize that when it actually matters, you'll need external accessories for that anyway.
8. The Native Resolution is 2880 x 1800, where are you getting your facts from?

You are ridiculous. You take the whole "First World Problems" thing to a whole new level...the engineering, mechanical, and hardware GOLD that apple poured into this new line of MacBooks goes far beyond anything thats available from anyone else today. Yes, that includes your beloved HP with Beats Audio and "Subwoofer." Your expectations were completely unrealistic, and there was a greater chance of Anne Frank and Hitler coming back from the dead and slowdancing on that stage than there was of any of these ridiculous wishes you had for whatever behemoth of a computer you wanted to see at WWDC come true.

1. personally, I rarely upgrade my storage. But I heard OWC has a solution for this?
2. Agree. We can never have too much memory. But 8GB can last me for a few years of apps generation I guess.
3. One of the most disappointing factor for me as a musician. I would need to be able to record music and listen using headphones at the same time. I know we can use adaptor but it is always convenient to have these built in, isnt it?
4. Agree. They have taken ODD, please at least give 1 more. I do not want to keep using external adaptor or multi USB ports to fix what MBP lacks. And I am paying a premium price for the laptop.
5. Nonchalant about this.
6. Nonchalant about this. I will never get any Mac beyond the base spec.
7. This is a big LOL. I am not expecting subwoofer for laptops at any level of price. Non-distorted sound at high volume is good enough.
8. I thought we are having 2x the reso due to Retina Display. (and retina display is the main hype of this new model)

Except it will look soft, as every LCD monitor always has done when run at a percentage of native resolution. At 1920x1200 it is using 4 physical pixels to draw every 3 virtual pixels, and that kind of scaling can't be done perfectly. Anyone thinking this is a substitute for a crisp 1920x1200 native resolution is going to be pretty disappointed. I would not even consider this screen unless you are happy with an effective 1440x900 albeit very nice and very sharp display.

----------

8. The Native Resolution is 2880 x 1800, where are you getting your facts from?
You obviously don't understand how retina works. It uses 4 times as many pixels, i.e. 2x in each direction, to display the same size content on the screen. Meaning that the physical size of text or pictures on the retina screen is exactly the same as it would be on a 1440x900 normal screen, just much sharper. So it will be just like using a 1440x900 15" laptop.
