i see only one flaw of the new macbook pro: it has no line in. otherwise it's a truly revolutionary machine.

and i'm now 4,250 poorer.

Next years machine will be revolutionary as well, and so on and so forth

----------

My 2 cents....

Miles to expensive! So glad a got my mbp about a month ago.
No RAM or HD upgrade! Thats just offensive but in time in sure this will change.

What did we say guys! The 1st gen of anything always has kinks, better to wait for the next one. Then the price may come down aswell.

True that, I laugh at those people who are spending money on something that cant be upgraded. I will wait till next year, invest my 4k in equities and buy one with my returns.

You have obviously never used any LCD screen at a non-native resolution. It is impossible to scale anything other than factors of 2 without rounding issues causing sharpness to be affected. That's the reason why every Apple retina display so far is exactly double the resolution of its non-retina predecessor.

This is not the same as using a non-native resolution on an LCD. This is only changing the scaling of interface elements, like Windows 7 does. So instead of a 12pt font being 15 pixels tall it is now only 12 pixels tall, a 20px toolbar is scaled to 14px and so on. It is not a hardware resolution scaling, but a software one which means it shouldn't look that bad. Plus with pixels that are only 1/4 of the size of normal pixels it will be even less noticeable.

Yesterday was no exception. As I pointed out in another thread, Apple wants $900 for a 512 GB SSD while I can get a Samsung 830 512 GB SSD for a bit over $500 with NewEgg's current sale. $700 regular so Apple is charging $200 more for a crappier SSD.

Not really true, you are comparing different form factors. The SSD in the new Retina MBP is blade style vs the normal 2.5" laptop drive. You're paying for the smaller size, as well as it being much more rare. Blade style SSDs are only in the Air and new Retina MBP and maybe a few PC ultrabooks. Simple supply & demand, so I don't think Apple is making $200 profit on the SSD alone.

At this point, they should have just thrown away SATA flash blades and gone with soldered flash storage to a faster interface. AppleCare would be worth it for that. Thunderbolt has also been slow due to the SATA bottleneck. Internal Flash RAID would have been a much better idea as well as full resolution control in the RMBP. The price is still on the low side since the capability is only slightly faster. Apple should have just gone the full monty and removed all the barriers to performance. I'm sure most pro users would gladly pay $6k for higher performance.

just get a thunderbolt to line in adapter. i'm sure that won't add more than 10% to the cost.

1. No user upgradeable storage
Agree.
2. Ditto with RAM. This hurts man.
Agree.
3. small thing but ONLY ONE HEADPHONE INPUT. what happened to the headphone + microphone jacks like on the last one? I don't want to buy adapters and dongles
A bummer for few, but it's not a widely used port.
4. only two usb ports? Pathetic
Get a hub and/or get newer and better peripherals.
5. Also, only 720p camera? Come on this 2012. they probably will update to 1080p in the spec bump next year.
We're not recording films here. It's a video chat camera. Deal with it.
6. $2800 for the high end 15 inch?!!? WTF. I thought the predictions of $3000 were laughable but I guess not.
Typical Apple pricing. You shouldn't be surprised.
7. Still only Stereo speakers. No subwoofer on the retina model either!
It would be a complete waste of space. I'm sorry if you're actually using laptop speakers.
8. 1440 x 900 base resolution! WTF I need that extra screen space I get with 1650 x 1050!
Scaling options. Solved.

For the price premium, don't think we should be "dealing with it". They're pushing the retina display forward and then giving us a 720p camera to use it with. Facetime to a lot of people is an important function of their mac and if they have the bandwith to support it, the premium laptop should too.

"I'm sorry if you're using laptop speakers".
Just wow...

When I first bought my MBP, I could honestly say build quality wise, it was near worth it. With so many features stripped and so many sacrifices made for the new MBP along with extras not included such as adaptors despite the BLATANT need for them for most users, its just not worth it now.

I have an ipad 3, iphone 4 and MBP but i'm in no rush to update in all honesty. 1GB graphics card for 2880 display... its not going to drive it all the hard. this display has came IMO way too early for the general user usage. play ur blue-rays? no. play ur 1080p rips? no.. cos u have limited space...

i know i can buy an external HD etc. but i just feel for the price, theres so much missing.

video and photo editors will love it but i predict a lot of idiots buying this MBP, then smacking on 720p content and marvelling at how phenomenal the image looks.

Regarding the subwoofer,

The "legacy" macbook pro had a subwoofer built in. For those laughing at the idea, bite your words.
http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs/13-and-15-inch/
(Scroll down to the audio section)

If you look at the audio section for the retina macs, they don't have the subwoofer built in.

I was wondering if anyone was going to pick up on the fact the other MBP's do in fact have a subwoofer. Something which is swaying me go for a MBP over an Air.

It does have line in, it's just a combo port like on the iPhone and 13" MBP. You would need a splitter to have separate plugs for audio out and line in.

No Kensington Lock Slot. Without that, I can't buy it, simple as that.
False sense of security. Kensington themselves have admitted it won't stop determined robbers from stealing the laptop. Only things those Kensington locks do are delay the chances of the laptop being stolen and slightly inconvenience potential robbers needing to saw through the steel lock cabling.

Hey thanks for the comment. Since I posted that, I have researched a little and the subwoofer on the those macs weren't all that great. Also, the retina macs do have improved speakers and are generally louder. There isn't much of a bass, without the subwoofer, but it is very good sounding audio, at least for a laptop. It is no longer much of a concern for me. I use headphones most of the time anyway.

That's exactly why I need the MBP to have one. I work in a public place and often have to leave my laptop unattended and out of sight for a few minutes at a time. The Kensington lock ensures that someone can't just walk past, pick up my laptop and walk off. It'll take them at least a few minutes to get the lock off, and by that time, I'm back. It's a deterrent, not an all-encompassing security solution.

That's great news. How do you switch between line in and out? I'm asking because my previous setup was an air (line out only) and a Mac pro with dedicated in and out ports.

Not having over 720p, I could see that being due to typical bandwidth uplink limitations. Though better lenses and sensor would still be greatly appreciable.

Just thought I'd make a thread about the things I specifically didn't like about this redesign. Overall I am loving it though.

I both love and am a little disappointed at the same time.

2. Ditto with RAM. This hurts man.

Feel free to add anything else.

I've been waiting for buying this for several months now but a few things make me hesitant.

The main one is the price. I was willing to spend about $2300- $2400 for a BTO decently upgraded MBP. But this very high starting price is obscene and with the soldered RAM, it's even more expensive(I need 16GB).

The second main one is the screen resolution. Retina's great but the screen space is just too small to do serious work. I was hoping for at least 1080p for base resolution.

There are other things as mentioned in the first list, but these two I just mentioned might be big deal-breakers. I would use this machine for hd video editing and compositing work. I also plan on trying some 3d modeling with it.

Do you guys think it's worth it, even with the big drawbacks?

omg dese are n0t flawz what r u tlkin bowt?

this is hillarious. you got so many negative reps for genuinely logical concerns.

RAM + memory = people were praising macs last year for being able to do this. this forum was full of threads about SSDs, ram, optibay. I love how apple in our press conference can make all these fanboys sing a different tune.

on the input front, its simple. they want you to buy their adaptors because they want more money from you. a TB port is not a commonly used port, even amongst professionals who'd much rather their fire ports be supported w/o splashing out on silly adaptors which just complicate what should be a simple plug and play experience.

the camera front and HDD front tbh... its all a bit confusing. we have this amazing screen but they restrict FT to 720p, they give us no blueray drive or optical drive to take advantage of video for casual users and the base harddrive itself is pretty small for HD content.

next year, apple will give 1080p FT cameras and the same people who neg repped you will be jerking off about how amazing FT is in 1080p, guaranteed. no mention of bandwith problems next year :).

speakers wise, until i hear them, i can't say anything but tbh i like my speakers on my mbp for a laptop and i'm sure they've only improved them.

price wise... i have no complaints. macs and apple are known to overprice and i don't mind paying as long as they include what I feel is a fairly versatile product which won't require 9839389 adaptors (otherwise i'd get a MBA).

i have an ipad, ipod, iphone, mbp but i'm not a fanboy. some people need to stop pointlessly negrepping people who are actually raising decent points just because they don't agree with what apple have done this year. i'm sure i'll get 393893893 neg reps rather than a reasonable debate but oh well.

I have 2 MBPs, 3 ATVs, 3 iPods, 2 iPhones and an iPad and yet still there's an immature minority here who will dish out the absurd 'hater' or 'android fanboy' or 'troll' or 'lack of vision' labels just for disagreeing with something that comes from the holy Apple, who in their eyes can do no wrong. It's their stock response, it's all they've got, and you have to either get used to it, or just not come here. The rational majority, for whom Apple is greatly admired and a preferred supplier, but not a religion, are able to disagree or debate sensibly, but a minority are annoying. That's just how it is on MR.

You clearly have little to no idea as to how the new MacBook Pro scales resolutions. The resolution adjusts accordingly to the workspace you choose.

Those complaining about the workspace are complaining about a 'problem' that Apple solved prior to it being released. They offer multiple workspace options ranging from 1024x640 to 1920x1200 WITHOUT degrading the visual image because the actual resolution of the display is higher than what's actually advertised.

Don't believe me? Have a look at these screenshots and tell me what the full scale resolution is on the 1920x1200 workspace photo. http://www.anandtech.com/Gallery/Album/2078
http://images.anandtech.com/galleries/2078/Screen Shot 2012-06-11 at 4.36.07 PM.png

That's right, it's actually a LARGER resolution than what's advertised. These screens are capable of 3840x2400 (Exactly double 1920x1200).

Still not enough evidence?

Have a look at these screens in person before you start making ridiculous assumptions.

No kensington lock port?

I can't believe this. How would they leave this out?

I can't leave my laptop on a table at a coffee shop and step away to take a call, not without worrying. Or even go to use the restroom.

I'm sure someone will joke about the area I might be in and how this shouldn't be a big concern, but it is and I'm a nice area.

Ridiculous. Almost rules out the RMBP for me.

Better make your call quick, or your restroom stop in a flash. You have about 60 seconds of security... With cable cutters, make that 5 seconds.

Plus, you have to carry that useless crap around. See this:

I think the main concern op has is the price.

Subwoofer, screen resolution, USB ports, etc... are just his own vents

You can always go buy HP envy

I always love post made by people who use !?!?!?!? words like WTF!?! etc.

Makes me take them very seriously.

People are always doing it when a new apple product comes out. And its usually 1 or 2 reasons.

1. They dont have money for the product, and feel better bashing it, and look for flaws.
2. They have (now) a inferior product, and want to bash the new one.
