Same problem here with PHILIPS 328E1CA. I use the same method as mentioned higher (rectangle filled with solid color which is changed through the spectrum). I can replicate the problem with HP Intel notebook and Windows 10 but flickering is triggered by much less colors than on a M1 Mini. Mac Mini M1 works flawless on odler 1080p monitor and with 4K TV. It feels like the GPU output signal is too fast for our display or the sync is somehow week. The vertical lines make mě think about some phase shift in signal (sometimes can be compensated by toying with sharpness on monitor). But what is sharpness if signal density is 1:1 with screen resolution???? Turning overscan on stops flickering. Setting lower resolution and scaling it up stops flickering. Setting resolution to 1080p and imaging it 1:1 (small picture on big screen) DOESN’T stop the flickering. So it makes me think it is not bandwidth related (not solvable by better cable).

I bought new monitor (DELL S2721DGF), which works okay. It has only noizy screen after macbook wake up. (It can be fixed just by repluging hdmi cord)
I bought display link adapter, which works perfectly with my old acer display (by native m1 app)

I recently encountered this on my M1 Mac Mini (LG 4k monitor) while browsing photos in Finder with Quick Look. On certain images - usually black and white - the flickering lines would appear.

Only solution for me was to select 'Reduce Transparency' in the Accessibility settings. No issues since.

I have ghosting and flicker on white objects with LG 27UN83A and Dell U2713HM, no pink squares, just flicker and vertical ghost lines. I can trigger it on the fly - all I need is to have white background open in final cut, then go to browser, find a picture with good contrast and a lot of white in google image search, click "Open in new tab" and as soon as the image with a lot of white opens on 'dark' background in browser the flicker starts. Unbelievably annoying.

What's the consensus gents - has anyone cured it by sending their mini to Apple for replacement?

Could you link to a suitable image that triggers this? I'll test it on my LG 32UN500 and report back.

I was using Sublime text 3, and they just updated to Support Apple Silicon. My issues with the display seem to have gone away. My guess is all these issues are related to the Rosetta translation layer. If you are having issues try closing any intel apps and see if it fixes the problem.

Also explains why apple isn't rushing to fix the problem as it will go away on it's own as more applications Update to support ARM.

Now seeing almost a 'flash' across the whole desktop. M1 16Gb Mini, USB-C to Displayport, LG32UN500 4k monitor.

Can trigger it over and over again by clicking Surfshark in my taskbar; it has a dropdown graphic that causes everything - even the wallpaper - to momentarily shift colour.

These really are beta machines, aren't they?

Recently this banner in YouTube dark mode viewed in Chrome triggers flicker for me every time: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-6SsxqfmyUjR4jVyOEIf2g/about
I tested that link, yup I experience the same thing exactly as yours.
Certain websites, or video on a site, certain photos on a site, etc, will cause the minor flickering.
I thought is the monitor I'm using is faulty. Seems like everyone else is experiencing the flickering albeit some are different kind of flickering.

Mac Mini M1, 16GB RAM, 1TB Storage.
BenQ PD2700U (HDMI to HDMI, standard BenQ's cable)

What do we do though - request individual replacements hoping that our next Mac Mini doesn't do it or turn it into "flicker gate" in hope Apple reacts and fixes this bug (which they haven't for 8 months)?

I'm shocked there are so few videos of this on YouTube.

This is happening to me as well on the 2020 M1 Mac Mini running Big Sur 11.4.

  1. Monitor: BenQ EL2870U 4k 60Hz HDR https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078HWN5CX/
  2. Cable(s):
    1. HDMI to HDMI (tried like 3 different ones)
    2. USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) to HDMI: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075V5JK36/

Apple just told me to buy their adapter :(
I have the identical monitor, using a USB-C to HDMI cable. This happens occasionally depending on what is on the browser. I haven't noticed it recently however. What adapter do Apple recommend and does that stop it?

EDIT: Strangely, I've just had my Apple TV 4K on the other HDMI input and in a dark scene it started flickering! Maybe it's the monitor.

I seem to recall reading another report from someone else claiming to be having these issues with their Apple TV as well. It seems like M1 devices don’t generally exhibit problems when connected to proper TVs so my latest theory is that this is not an M1 specific issue, but is a problem that affects Apple Silicon chips in general and the reason it is only becoming apparent with M1 is that not many people were connecting Apple Silicon devices to proper monitors before.

They told me to try using this $69 adapter, which I haven't gotten the chance to try yet.

I figured the USB-C to HDMI cable I got from Amazon (4.5 stars with almost 40,000 reviews) would be better, but you know Apple and their opinion of non-Apple cables/adapters.

I am very skeptical that it's the monitor. I've had mine since 2019 and I haven't experienced any issues with screen flickering with any other computer before.

I've also ruled out a bad cable. The Apple support tech had me switch the ports I was using for each monitor. Initially, I was using the USB-C to HDMI cable for the BenQ monitor, and a regular HDMI cable for the second one. Even after switching the BenQ to use the HDMI, and the other to use USB-C, the issue still was the same.

With that said though, I have no idea what else could cause this.

According to the specs of the M1 Mac Mini, it supports up to 6k at 60Hz and 4k at 60Hz via USB-C and HDMI.

I guess it could be a compatibility issue between the BenQ display and the M1 Mac Mini. There’s at least a few people on YouTube having similar issues with their devices.

It's not just BenQ, it's all kinds of random monitors, LG, Dell, so far there are very few makes that haven't been reported to have these issues. It's definitely something shot with M1 graphics, we were all hoping that it's a driver issue that Apple can fix, but since it also happens on Apple TV, I suppose that idea is out of the window.
I suppose the main question is - are we dealing with poor quality control, batch of chips with damaged graphical element and does replacing Mac mini under warranty fixed the issue for anyone.

It's exactly the same flickering I have with @Magnafox . Although mine not that harsh flicker. Or is it maybe from the camera it makes look like so harsh.

Sometimes a quick restart of the mac fix it, but temporarily. Switching off/on the monitor won't solve thou.
I tried switching to 30Hz still the same.

for anyone following I had this issue and it was caused by all apps Zoom. my hardware is a thunderbolt connected LG 34" flat monitor > dongle > mini. so any comments on adapter is moot at this point, its all apple 🤑 tech here.

When I joined a meeting it would flicker like crazy. today the flickering lasted all day. I found an advanced option for GPU accelerated sharing / viewing – but that didn't fix it.

After going through this list I used activity monitor to quit all my intel apps. turns out I no longer flicker.

correlation? I believe not.

context: i connected via both HDMI or thunderbolt > USB-C and its the same in fact HMDI was far worse.
Restart, the same
New user, the same

hope this helps someone

I hope this thread can create more awareness and make it into macrumors's headlines...
This issues haven't been able to solve.

It is outright outrageous selling a computer (mac m1) with technology defects or half-baked. I feel cheated.

Well, at least Apple is consistent. Just ask any Mac Pro Trashcan owner with burnt-out graphics cards or anyone with a butterfly keyboard laptop.
