Flip Flopping between macOS and Windows

I will be fine with 2 new laptops and a new desktop in the household. A new laptop for me, one for the wife, plus a new desktop system for her, where she can dock her work laptop into the system as needed. I am fine with windows 11, shut off all the ads/tracking and it's a fine OS.

I'm glad for you! What Mac setup you running?

Are you recovered or do you think it's mainly the pricing that's stopping you flip flopping?

Personal machine is the base M4 mini and work is the M5 13” MBA. Really good machines. I have both connected to my Gigabyte M27U which is a 27” 4k 144hz monitor with a built in KVM.

I think I’m recovered and have no itch to get a PC. Any desire to game I can spin up GeForce now for 1 month.

I think I am too. After going and looking at everything available, it's the "devil you know" syndrome. I will be getting the new Dell 14s with ultra X7 processor, to get the good graphics processing with the 390 arc, and OLED touchscreen.

All aluminum build will be nice too so I won't have to replace the bottom of my system every 6 or 7 months because of cracks.

Yea i've been watching pc prices pretty regularly. If i was looking to build a gaming pc, i would definitely be holding out for awhile. I'm lucky i got mine a couple years ago, $2600 Cdn at the time, now the same build would be well over $4k, it's insane.

I upgraded my wife to a new laptop last summer, my kids got their laptops and i got the m5 air when it was released before the price increases as well. I am definitely content for awhile and very lucky i chose to upgrade my hardware when i did.

I went to get some ram and a big drive for my son's gaming laptop. WOAH, the ram prices are NUTS.

Me too. I when I bought all my tech over the last 18 months I thought it would get worse but my refurbished windows gaming laptop (which I bought like 7 months ago) is now like 2.5 times the price. Insanity.

Heck, at this point I would get a MacBook Neo (probably) instead of the MacBook Air—ah who am I kidding? I can’t do 8GB of RAM. I just can’t. Happy my M4 MacBook Air should last me like 7 years hopefully.

Yeah I mean it's not tinfoil hat at this point to realise that this basically is the trajectory of everything and now with hardware prices in the stratosphere it's like the perfect storm.

1. Make subscription services that are well priced and good.
2. Make them worse intentionally, then offer higher prices to get rid of ads etc, get exclusive features etc.
3. Then add adverts even to the higher prices

The difference is before you could just opt out of things like Netflix and buy your own physical media but that's going, and now gaming is going exactly the same way.

You'll own nothing and be happy. ****ing hate it.

That's the only thing that makes me hesitant to sell my desktop PC. I barely even game but I don't want to have to pay a subscription to do so.

The problem is people bitch and moan but eventually roll over and pay it. When people actually grow a set and stop paying for these things, these companies will have to take notice. But your rights are eroding by the day, and they're making it harder and harder to find physical media. It's a cat and mouse game where we all lose if we don't act fast.

Totally agree. But at the end of the day, all I can control is myself. So I game on my computer, maintain my cloud server locally with my media on it. None of it pirated, all owned by me.

All I can do. But if we all do it together?
 
Paul's Hardware had a nugget this morning in that Nova Lake will be on series 900 motherboards and will have socket 1954 and it will be good for Nova Lake, Razer Lake and Hammer Lake. Why is that news? Intel's sockets are often good for only one or two releases. Being available for three releases is a big deal for them.

We might even get lucky and get four.
