these last 2 posts are very important to our future, hopefully we can still have!

anyways

wanted to say how nice both systems are, and this Dell XPS 13" is just solid and vibrant!
and trying to install Monterey, now bigsur on a Macbook Air 2010 with a spare ssd drive.
the process is confusing, and nothing works and there are steps missing.
which is why I like Windows 10 because going to 11 and back was quite simple.
granted the dell xps is from 2019 but i seem content with W10 until 202
while fear using Mojave later this year.

I have a 2008 XPS Dell Studio that I haven't booted up in a year but it runs Windows 10 just fine and performance is decent. Windows 10 is quite remarkable in being able to run on very old hardware. I am running High Sierra on my 2010 iMac. I doubt that Catalina, Big Sur or Monterey would run well on it but I'm going to try Mojave on it one of these days.

Mojave is incredible on my Macbook Air 2010, 4 GB, and recoomend that OS
im using high sierra on a extra ssd drive and that does not work as well as Mojave.
the patcher-install was easier than opencore procedures.

Does your Dell XPS have a solid state drive?

It's my system for mocking up ideas. Sometimes it has an SSD, sometimes an HDD, sometimes a mixture. It has 48 GB of RAM as well and the video card can be variable. It was back in the day when Dell made decent hardware.

I keep getting the itch to jump ship! If it wasn't for the massive disappointment that is the Pixel 6/6 Pro I may have done so. The 6a could tempt me.

I love my iMac, but as I've mentioned previously Windows is better for my work, gives me the option to game and scratches that tinkering itch.

I'm working on some Powershell programming with Azure and you need to be able to do multiple platforms these days if you're a developer. I could do it on macOS but it would be a lot more work.

I spend a lot of times in Office 365 which is just better on Windows. Chrome is also better for the cloud development I do. All available on macOS but not as good in some small way.

Yup.

Sometimes I use Linux as well and either run a Linux VM on my Windows system, Linux on an old desktop or on an Intel iMac. Use the best tool for the job if it is available. I should look to see if XCode is as good as Powershell with Azure but I seriously doubt it.

I’m back, lol…

So, yeah, sold my iPhone 12 a couple weeks back, have been using my back-up S7 Edge, was back on my T470 and gaming on my i9-9900K. All’s well and good and then my brother and I start talking Amiga, astrophotography etc and all of a sudden my MBP which was going to go up on eBay this Sunday is about to be reclaimed by yours truly with a 90% likely trip to Apple for an iPhone 12 or 13 tomorrow.

?

-edit-
Forgot to write, I also sold off my iPad 8th gen but have now inherited my brother’s one - double ?

I've said before that having both is probably the ideal situation. For me though that's not possible because of cost and my minimalist nature.

I think you’re right. I’m fairly skint at the moment so I’ll see if I keep consoles instead of PC. Truth be told, from my particular vantage point, some of Apple’s stuff presents more value for money than the Android/Windows side. It just depends on usage scenarios (again, I stress, for me).

Don't listen to the minority having a few software issues: the Pixel 6 is a wonderful phone.

I’ve been an Apple boy in years 1994-2010.
Jumped to Win because I could not wait until 2013 for the new Mac Pro, so I bought a power PC (i mean “enthusiast mega-expandable PC”) back in 2012 which i still will use for few years with Windows 11 (64GB RAM, 10-core Xeon).
Next computer will be an Apple 2-in-1 but only if it comes with a PWM-free screen which is unobtanium these days with Apple Macs except the M1 eMac, erhm iMac.

I jumped ship, sort of. I still have a desktop that I'll use but I went from a ThinkPad. To the M1 16" MBP. I'm blown away by sheer design and build quality. I'm still getting used to macOS, its been what feels like forever since I last used a Mac. This thing is whisper quiet, fast and cool running. The thinkpad had fans that sounded like a jet was taking off, where as the M1, I've yet to hear the fans.

I have windows running in the background doing some tasks, I have chrome running and music playing. Nothing heavy duty, but the temps are 50c. I definitely get the clamor about how this is a game changer, it definitely is.

I was playing a game on steam, while on battery, updating some apps, and still configuring it earlier today and I've only gone through 86% of the battery.

It's whisper quiet because the fans don't run at all unless the load is moderate. This is the only laptop that I've ever owned where the min-fan-speed is 0. That's got to help with battery life too. I absolutely love this model though it's far more in compute than I really need.

It's been almost 1.5yrs since I built my rig with the intention of gaming and getting back into 3D. I've gamed a little but struggled to do anything 3D.

I put it up for sale as an EOI, if I get close to my asking price I'll let it go. It will be replaced with a Studio Display and probably a second hand M1 Mini till an M2/Max/Pro comes along. I've mainly just been consuming content on my PC so the mini should be fine, with a little photo and video editing from my iPhone.

I want the Studio Display because I really liked the 5K screen on the 27" iMac I used during my time at uni, text was so nice and the calibration was great. I watched a video on the display and it highlighted Apple's calibration consistancy among their devices, so when editing photos on the Studio Display, when I view it on an iPhone/iPad it will look the same. My current dual display setup I can not get them to match and when I edit a photo, bring it to my phone to post, I have to further tweak it to look how I want.

Last few days I’ve been very close to buying a Pixel 6 to replace my 13 mini. My computing needs are quite simple these days so I could easily use my work laptop for work instead of my M1 iMac. I would just need to buy a USB-C 4K monitor to make it decent. Outside of work related tasks I really only use my iMac for a bit of admin for my wife’s business. I no longer do photo editing and I have an Xbox Series X for gaming.

Saying that I know come June when Apple start showing us the software improvements I’ll remember why I love Apple. It’s the little things and the consistency of delivering polished incremental updates year after year that keep it feeling fresh.

I'm running with an M1 mini, 2014 iMac with external 25 inch QHD display and the big Windows desktop. 5 screens. I removed the 2010 iMac because it is getting warm and the 2010 adds heat. I will put it back in the setup in the fall when it gets cooler unless I have other hardware. I would like to replace the 25 inch QHD with a 27 inch QHD and will watch the local Craigslist boards. This setup is very nice right now. I still do like having Windows available for some specific tasks but I overall much prefer macOS. It is nice when the two are well-integrated on the desktop.

An M* Pro mini which supports three displays would be interesting too. I do not have my hopes up in 2022 though, particularly with Apple's current problems in manufacturing and logistics. I do not need anything new or upgraded but will keep my eyes open. A cheap 2020 iMac upgrade from my 2014 iMac would also be interesting.

I have been thinking about selling my 2008 Dell XPS Studio. I suspect that it could get $200 but that I'd probably have to wait a year to get that price. I think that it would sell at $100 as the video card alone is worth more than that. I have not booted it up in at least six months.

I'm very new to the world of Mac - I have been a lifelong Windows user and only got my MacBook Air M1 a couple of weeks ago for the purpose of music production. It's absolutely perfect and I wish I considered a Mac sooner.

I use my Windows-running, custom built tower for games and daily productivity use where sitting at a desk with mouse and keyboard is more convenient, but honestly, I think if this tower packed in I'd consider getting a Mac Mini or iMac and then try using Parallels to run any Windows-exclusive apps I need.

Windows currently isn't supported on Apple Silicon though some people run Windows ARM which will emulate or translate x86 code to run on Windows. At the moment, I think that it's better to just use a Windows system or use an x86 Mac if you need to run Windows programs. Which is what I do (separate Windows system).

Hang on a little while longer for VMware's announcement on their M1 app. If the price of their latest VMware Fusion 12 is any indication then the M1 software might be free too.
There's also UTM - that might just do it for you. Recently there's been great instructions on getting Windows 10, maybe 11 too, running using UTM.
The ARM version of Windows will have to come out before this is doable.

Of course, if you have enough money, then by all means invest in expensive Parallels software. ? Just giving advice.

And a warm welcome to the world of macOS and Macs from me.

You may already know this so apologies... but I wanted to point out that for a while now VMWare Fusion for Mac is essentially free for home and educational purposes. You just need to register to get a product key.

There are some limitations but from memory these are more related to higher end things you likely wouldn't be doing at home.

Just a thought if you have an Intel based machine.

Hmm, all this VMWare talk is giving me ideas.

Currently, I only use my Windows PC to play games (every now and then), and to use Quicken and from time to time Outlook for Windows (if I want to change the subject of certain incoming emails - to make it more relatable)...

I've flipped (I can't remember if I last flipped or flopped :p)

Since I don't use a dedicated camera anymore my computing needs are largely just work related. I've managed to get a new Lenovo L13 from work which should be here in the next few weeks. That will be my primary machine which can double up as a personal machine as well for the various admin tasks I do. It's a reverse to how I've always run things in the past where I would use a personal machine for work.

Took delivery today of a Dell 27 4K USB-C Hub Monitor- P2723QE which is lovely. Just need the new laptop as it's a little laggy on my current work laptop of 5 years old.

With me moving back to Windows that means the iMac will be put up for sale. I don't like how iCloud works with non-Apple devices so I'll be going back to Google for my services which means I'll be grabbing a Pixel phone. I've got a 6 coming which I managed to get for £400, should tie me over until the 7 comes out.

Xbox Series X is serving me well as a gaming fix, lovely connected to my 65" LG CX OLED.

The Apple Watch has been annoying me recently with its ability to intrude notifications all the time so I'll be fine ditching that and going back to a dumb watch.
