The Pixel 6a is being returned. Really frustrating because it’s a excellent phone in many ways let down by some fundamentals.

This leaves me with no viable Pixel phone, as I’m doubtful the 7 will be any different. I’m also only interested in stock android and a good camera so that doesn’t leave me any other phones.

My current options are basically go for an iPhone 14 Pro and run Google apps or that Google don’t half arse the Pixel 7.

FWIW, here are the things that I didn’t like about the 6a:

  • On cellular data and browsing the web the phone got very warm.
  • The adaptive brightness is too slow. If I take my phone from my pocket and it’s bright out, I can’t see the screen for what feels like an age while the brightness adjusts to a level where I can see the screen.
  • The edges of the plastic back aren’t flush with the side of the phone in several places meaning it’s quite sharp when holding the phone.
  • The gap between the bezel and the frame is bigger than normal so it collects a lot of dust.
  • The grill for the ear piece is huge and collects a lot of dust.
  • The screen doesn’t feel as responsive I’m used to.
  • There are tons of random micro shutters and lags in various places. Some of the animations are junk.
So 6a is boxed up ready to return and I’m on my backup iPhone 6s which has a 3 hour battery 😅
Really appreciate the time you spend documenting your experiences. I no longer have the $ or time to do stuff like this so really fun reading. Thank you!

yeah I agree with that.

I really enjoy this thread and all the stuff LiE_ & others do is the same stuff I do all the time :) so it helps me to feel semi-normal after all ;-)

for me, andriod v ios is solved for me, ios without doubt.

but windows v macos. SOOOOO much I prefer on macos but yet I just feel "at home" on windows even after using mac for years. I don't really know why

Well, this is my final flip-flop. Finally did it. Have gone full PC/Android again. Bought an S22 on Saturday; my DIY rig was back on desk later that afternoon. My X1 Carbon is also back in use. M1 MBP, homepods, iPhones, iPads, the whole lot on eBay.

Ultimately, I felt that I was being hamstrung residing in the Apple ecosystem. I still do love the hardware and the software, but I feel so much more at home on my PC, windows/linux laptops and on android. Been an awesome (and expensive) experiment since 2014 when I got my first MBA (then first retina iMac, iPhone 6 etc etc), but, ultimately, it's just not for me.
It is now one month since your "final flip-flop". I hope you had little difficulty selling all the Apple gear you listed. How do you find the S22?

How much does the SP8 weigh with the keyboard?
It weighs about the same as an iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard.

Do you ever use the Surface Pro 8, with a monitor, too? That in the past, has been where I've felt the Surface Pro has failed me, repeatedly...
I do attach my SP8 to my monitor; I have no issues doing so.

So far, I'm enjoying it. I'm thinking about selling my iPad Pro and keeping the SP8 along with my 16-inch MacBook.

What I like about the SP8 over the iPad Pro: A full OS. As a student, if something happens to my MacBook, I can't use my iPad Pro as a replacement since it can't run the test software, unlike the SP8. I like how much smoother and crisper XBox Cloud Gaming is on the SP8. There's other small things about the SP8 I really enjoy, especially the OS.

I can't decide if I would be wasting money or not by selling my iPad since it's less than a year old. I barely use it, and I feel like it sits around and collects dust.

So last week I had to RMA my Gigabyte M28U monitor, it has a weird bright spot on the screen. So 1 week without my monitor to be told they cannot see the issue so it's being returned to me. I'm hoping it just fixed itself, will see. It's not a huge issue but it developed within 30 days so I wasn't too pleased. If it's still there after I test with multiple computers and cables I'll be documenting the issue in more detail and sending it back for a refund.

I've been finding it hard to resist buying a phone, I really want to wait for the new iPhones and Pixel phones before I commit. The Pixel 6 Pro is very tempting at £649 and £145 trade in for my iPhone 6S.

So I received my monitor back, issue is still there and easy to see. However the bigger issue now is that they have scratched the bezel.

Video of the bright spot, recorded it while on the chat with the returns department to send to them.

Not sure it's important that they find the bright spot if they replace it for the scratch.

My experience with bright spots on monitor is that it's a result of pressure. I left my wedding ring on the palmrest and tried to close the lid and it didn't so I checked and found the ring in it. It left a bright spot on the monitor but no other damage. It's not noticeable unless you look for it. The only time that I've found an issue with my monitors is three dead pixels in a 1999 Dell Inspiron 4000. It was a refurb and I just lived with it.

I always buy Dell Ultrasharp monitors. I've been buying them for 15 years and have never had problems with them outside of a broken external power adapter with one really old monitor. I just bought a new PSU.

I always go Dell but unfortunately they don't have a monitor that fits my needs: 27-28" 4K 144Hz.

I think that the Ultrasharps are aimed at business customers and I don't think that they see the need for anything over 60.

The gaming monitors also have the premium panel guarantee, well at least the Alienware models do. They have a 4K monitor at 144Hz but it's 32".

Found another issue with the Gigabyte M28U so I may have to suck it up and go for the Dell if I can get a refund.

Gap with backlight shining through.

That would annoy the crap out of me as I work in a dark room most of the time.

You could just put a small piece of black tape over it.
I could but I paid £600 and all these faults appeared in the first 30 days. I'd rather try my luck with a different monitor.

So I have this monitor arriving today as a replacement for my Gigabyte.

While I love my MacBook Pro, I found that when programming pro a/v equipment any type of usb-c to rj45 or usb-a is flaky. So I’m picked up a Dell Latitude off Amazon with Win 11 and dedicated rj45 port.

There also doesn’t seem to be a lot of a/v programming software for MacOS.

This thread sounds like a 15 season run of a sitcom. Good luck to @LiE_

And also, please accept my jerk-like attitude - I mean nothing by it..

Title(s) of sitcom could be: "Transitioning", "Transition almost complete", "Moving Away", "How I Ended Up using a Mac Then Did Nothing But Complain, Bought A Pixel Phone, And That Wasn't Good Enough Either", "Alternative Devices" or "Switchers In Cars Getting Frustrated Over Everything" 😝 😂

I honestly thought the complaining over switching was over 15 years ago. I regret many things, like wiping back to front - or doing the electric boogie / worm, naked on hot asphalt in the middle of the summer. I just don't make a thread about it.

Of course, I'm only jesting - I just think these threads and subsequent discussions are comical seeing as it always is ends with someone posing the question, then in their mind already made the decision as per the OP - so there really isn't much to discuss. Even a flip flop will eventually turn out the way of the flop or the flip.

Let's say you play heads or tails.. you decide on tails for one decision and then decides that heads' option is the one you really want - what you do is simply decide to do whichever the heads thing was on a coin as it's entirely your decision.

I know, I'm an idiot - I own that.

I feel the same. Just trying Win 11 now and the more modern UI is lights years ahead of the mac.

Apologies to both your good self and to @LiE_ for not having logged back in!

To be honest, I think I have started to miss Apple.

All I've done is game on the gaming rig (what would one expect from a gaming rig!). I was hoping to get around to do some video editing etc but that hasn't panned out. The X1 I've ended up using a tad more productively (scanning family photos and sorting them out etc), but mainly has been relegated to becoming a glorified Chromebook.

I do love the S22, but the battery leaves much to be desired.

I think I miss the seamlessness across the Apple devices. Even with the Phone Link app, I find that my options to sending files/links to others is just a much more stilted affair. Not having proper family sharing for movies purchased on MS is a bit of a let-down, too. Was looking to buy a Galaxy Watch 5 but I think that at the end of the day, I'd prefer the Apple Watch.

Now that I'm typing this out, I think I'm in a bit of strife and in a crisis, platform-wise... Not so "final" after all... 😭

Everything I put up on eBay got sold that very first week. (seller's remorse tone???)

I'm impressed with Ryzen 7xxx and it looks like they are pricing it well so I'll look for efficiency reports - but it does look like it will take a while to get these out. I am very happy with my Apple stuff these days but need to run Windows from time to time.

totally know what you mean. phone link is nowhere near as good as the Apple integration and I much prefer the apple watch to any of the androids.

Thanks for responding and for not pretending everything is wonderful when unfortunately it seems you are at a crossroads. Having just sold your Apple products I would not rush out and buy them again. I would give your new set up a fair chance and see how you adapt. A month is perhaps too short a time to rid your mind of the Apple ways of doing things.
