yeah I've reluctantly got to the same place. Building my new pc next week.

I still prefer Apple hardware and the relative quietness of their kit but macos just delivers a slower workflow for my particular use.

Is the 144hz monitor actually a benefit for business use or just games?

I hope to see some builder reviews of the 13th gen parts. Just out of curiosity.

13600K is great bang for the buck at $300 at Micro Center. Destroys the 7600x and for the most part the 7700x.

Even the 13900K power scaled down is pretty competitive.

Yes, but the cpu isn't the only cost, the motherboard too and these new generation processors have expensive motherboards. Intel has this in their favor - you can still use DDR4 ram, where as AMD, you have to use DDR5, so you have an expensive, processor, motherboard and ram.

Taken the plunge and rocking a Pixel 7. It's a very nice device that takes lovely photos. I like that it fully integrates with Google services which I am a heavy user of. So far been a smooth experience, helped by the fact that everyone I know uses WhatsApp and my wife uses a Pixel 7 Pro.

I've had my Pixel 7 for 2 weeks now, the camera is nice, but the little things I like about iPhone/iOS are creeping in.

Mostly just the refinement (while there are issues with iOS, it's generally been consistently good for me). Missing FaceID the most, when I'm home the fingerprint reader generally works 'okay' at ~80-90% of the time (though seems like it's failing more and more), but when I go out and my fingers get oily it just doesn't work, really annoying when going to pay for stuff. Scrolling smoothness in different apps is inconsistent in smoothness and distance of your finger input, some being pretty smooth, to a little micro stutter, to straight up janky (noticeably in Twitter and Firefox with uBlock (depending on site), have switched back to Chrome which is a lot better), it's gotten better recently. Adaptive brightness gets stuck sometimes when it dims from inactivity and touching the screen again doesn't go back, need to lock/unlock the phone. More of an Android 13 issue, sometimes swiping up to go home or launching apps will get stuck, locking and unlocking phone gets things going properly. Gesture to access hamburger menu is hit and miss, mostly hitting back or nothing at all. While minor individually, it adds up and takes away of everyday usability when you just want to get things done.

I do like being able to set custom notification tones for every app again. The ability to scale text and UI smaller, I've actually had to go one up from the smallest text size to make it more comfortable. The camera again is great, haven't used video much. These alone plus the freshness of a different OS, aren't enough to give it an edge over an iPhone for me. While it might not be as good in some areas, I've never been disappointed in its short comings and it's just consistent where it counts. I do like switching back time to time when I get bored and too see how things have progressed.

I would like to tough it out till an iPhone redesign, but not sure if I'll make it that long at this rate. Lucky I'm not heavily invested in any ecosystem, which makes switching phones and computers easy.

Google just announced Black Friday sake for $150 off starting the 17th. Depending on trade in value and sale I may just pick one up.

I and my family are fully entrenched in the iOS ecosystem. I don't see any reason to leave. I've tried many different non-iPhones over the years, windows phones, Nexus (predecssor to the Pixel), etc and none really offer user experience that I get with the iPhone. Especially when you factor in that my kids and wife have iPhones, and we face time frequenty.

I have to support Windows at work, but my work machine is a Mac Mini.

Also due to work (pro av) I sometimes have to directly connect to a video wall controller or other type of device and the usb-usbc or usb-rj45 adapters on a MacBook Pro don’t always work correctly. Plus most of the pro av softwares out there are Windows only.

So I use both daily but I prefer MacOS.

My desk is a horrible mess, I already told my family that this weekend is a cleaning weekend. I think I'll be attacking my desk as well. I don't have a well defined theme, I barely have room for a laptop on one side and a desktop on the other with a KVM switch.

I've been thinking about a standing desk, but I'm trying to be honest with myself - will I really stand? When I worked in an office I would stand and walk around, it helped me think and I'm missing that working from home

I've bought a standing desk. With remote and all. 3 years ago.
For the first 3-4 weeks I've actually used it in standing mode. Since then, I've bought leg rests, etc. Not once did I use the standing mode. And I'm an active guy, gym/tennis/football almost every day.

That's the worst I have spent my money that I can think of.

I bought a standing desk during COVID. My issue is that I stand too much I think. I can be at my desk at 8am and still be standing there late into the afternoon. I do move about during the day and sit at night.

Actually got to the stage where I struggle to sit during the day, I just feel more productive when standing.

The desk in my setup above is actually a sit stand desk. I don't use it in stand position anymore, don't think it would even work in the new space with the eves.

The trick to sit stand desk is to alternate often between the 2 modes. I wouldn't recommend trying to stand all day.

That's how I envision I would want it to work, and as mentioned i like to consider myself fairly active but I also can be lazy at the same time

That's encouraging, in a sense. Do you still use the standing desk with standing?

As for me, its hard to give up my desk. I had it for over 40 years, it was from a (now defunct) company called Scandinavian designs. Its a minimalist teak desk and while its now on the smaller size, its something that I bought with my own money as a teenager and it holds sentimental value

What makes me laugh about the idea of a standing desk is human nature.

When you have a job where you stand all day

40 year old teak desk with cool design. I wouldn't let that go. Sounds really cool!

Tip: if you have an Apple Watch, the reminders to stand does help.
Took me a few weeks to get into a routine to stand, using my Ergotron. Now I use one at home and when in the office...
